PDF+ found wanting in terms of performance

10 replies · 4,729 views · Started 02 April 2010

PDF+ has come a long way from Psion days, a lifespan of well over 10 years. But it seems that it's left somewhat wanting in 2010, as David Gilson pounds it with his PDF document collection and compares it to the Quickoffice Adobe LE PDF reader. PDF+'s developer is very active on AAS, so expect a lively response below and perhaps look out for an updated version and an updated review in due course.

Read on in the full article.

As the developer of Pdf+, I am well aware of the slow rendering speed of
Pdf+ when it encounters pages with complicated layouts like time tables.
Unfortunately I never found a solution within the restrictions in which Pdf+
has to operate due to both it's own internal construction and the
limitations placed upon it by Symbian OS (which where severe in it's early
days). I hope that the adoption of Qt, which has a more capable graphics API
than Symbian OS, will improve matters a lot.

Luckily the reviewer recognized the care taken to create a very usable user
interface, because I believe that making a program as user friendly as
possible is very important, and one of the more challenging aspects of a
viewer for phones with their small screens.

There is also one aspect of Pdf+ the reviewer did not talk about. Pdf+ is
capable of ready very big files. The biggest I tried myself is the PDF 1.5
reference document, which is 15 megabytes in size, and I have heard of users
being able to open even bigger files.

So I would like to present a challenge here: how big is the biggest PDF file
that can be opened by Pdf+? Send your files to [email protected] with
the heading "Big PDF file competition", or send a message with a link from
which the file can be downloaded. The file must be publicly available as it
will be downloadable from the mBrain Software website. The challenge will run until 1 may 2010.

David Gilson's reply seemed like an automated one! i will check again... Hello Hello, I loved Avatar 😉

Half on topic, but connected I will add my input to say how disappointed I am with the pdf reader for QuickOffice connect for iPhone. It's only able to open tiny pdf files if they are the right version, and otherwise complains about being out of memory. Very annoying because I needed it to work.

Sorry to go off topic, i am big fan of Steve as well as of Nokia, but Nokia managed to piss me off badly, similarly as they done to American Consumers. I own nokia 5800, but i have no updates for my product code which is 0575378, i am stuck on v30, i could not get v31 and v40 till now, my phone is not branded and its unlocked, so no kinetic scrolling and other enhancements for me, as well as for hundreds of thousands of other users.

Steve please tell nokia to release updates for my product code (0575378) too, this situation and attitude of nokia will not help there already declining market i feel. Steve please DO SOMETHING and request them to release it?

Thankyou

Why would you go so far off-topic is totally beyond me... if you have a complaint, why not try contacting Nokia USA instead of making a totally pointless, out-of-context request?

There are other forums on AAS that can be used other than this news article one, but if you want the latest version of firmware and it is not available for your product code then just use another product code.

Oh dear, I sounded automated, did I?

... Thank you for your comment, your feedback is important to us ...

Anyway ...

I will say that I was sorry I had to say what I said about PDF+. Until I discovered PDF+ it seemed that QuickOffice had a monopoly on S60 PDF readers. So I really hope that PDF+ continues to improve and gets more users (and in saying that I acknowledge the limits in Symbiam that Sander van der Wal refers to). The S60 PDF space really needs some competition!

Just be careful if you decide to go with the basic version of the program. Two pdf files that I wanted to read on my E71 "can't be read" by this version.
