i thought this was bein hyped as quite competitively priced when it was first announced... this is pretty much the n95/n96/n97/n900 flagship price (play.com currently detail it as �425)

hope o2 pick this up on contract, but that'll depend whether nokia ship it with their usual type firmware or this time decide to ship it with a stable firmware

I am sick of waiting for this, I know nokia have always said 3rd quarter and they aren't lying but right at the very end of Q3 like they are doing may as well be Q4. Their communication has been very poor. Why couldn't they give people updates on progress. Lastly I know they will be managing the N8 development project ensuring that they meet their planned costs for develoment and manufacture but with so much riding on this device the cost of not getting it to market in a reasonable time frame must outweigh the cost of applying more resource to ensure it is delivered sooner.

Annoyingly they have me though, despite my discontent I will still purchase one because there is no phone that comes close to this as an ultimate convergance device.

1, I would be very surprised, if N8 will be available before nokia world (Sept 14)

2, Nokia has bad habit of overpricing the devices for first month or two (or three). it was common before with feature phones, but I think it's less frequent with smartphones nowadays.

3, Devices in Nokia stores (eshop and brick) are always more expensive than in other shops. I understand this as support for 3rd party shoppers, but unexperienced customer has bad impression by chiecking price at Nokia

Would be repeating the mistakes of the past, throwing resources at something like this invokes the law of diminishing returns.

In the UK HTC Desire GBP429, Samsung GalaxyS GBP429 SIM free on Play.com and now iPhone4 GBP480 pay-as-you-go on Vodafone. It's gonna have to be cheaper than GBP420 - just saying.

Yes some of those phones may be after their launch price but it's Nokia's fault for releasing this phone 3-6 months late (really S^3 is 3months after their original timetable and if they hadn''t wasted a year on Symbian Foundation but had improved the OS instead then S^3 would've been ready in 2009 when it would've looked OK/pretty decent), now it has to compete with phones really from a class higher but now at very similar prices. Nokia have boxed themselves into a position where their only weapon is price (and that they can do but are often slow to) and all their gear are the phones you had to buy not the phones you really really wanted to buy.

You can't compare the SIM free prices of the Android devices to the payg (ie. subsidised) price of the iPhone 4.

There is still a chance that the final UK price will be under �400, but to be honest the number of people buying SIM free is relatively small - the majority tend to be on contract or payg.

The trick is to buy from the stores that sell PAYG price, with only a requirement to pay for �10 worth of PAYG time, but all the phones are unlocked and you can do whatever you like with them. One particular very large High Street chain is well known for this advantage.

Time is ebbing away for Nokia to get S^3 products and Meego(/Harmattan) devices onto market and make an impact without slashing prices at the outset as Dell prototypes of the models rumoured last April starting with the Thunder are beginning to surface on t'internet see this engadget story which as they point out could mean that the rumoured Flash and Smoke may not be far behind the Flash in particular noffering strong lower mid competition and even the Thunder could be very competitively priced given Dell's pricing and purchasing power. If there's a manufacturer that can really challenge Nokia on production economies it must be Dell. And the other manufacturers are scaling up to assault the mid and lower tiers.

Today even the BBC had an item on it's homepage about the Android update to 2.2 and the Carphone Warehouse have been running a big Android promotion over the summer. Without any talk, mention, anything about Symbian, why? Because there are no hero devices in fact there are barely any 2010 devices so result no cares what it's up to anymore. Turning this disinterest around is going to be tough with permanently late to market devices that have been so previewed and novelty PR'd in advance that by the time it's actually physically available you feel has been out for 6 months. Same story with N97 and Sony Ericsson did exactly the same with their vapourware devices prior to their collapse. Too much PR not enough engineering, or cart-horse, sure Apple know how to whip up a PR storm but they make sure they have the product in place first and seem to devote their energies to that. With Nokia it feels they start by puffing it off and then think how to make the device actually run.

Nokia's eternal delays are proving really dangerous for them and the big guns are coming and although Symbian grew last year Android is really powering ahead and a lot of it's growth is coming at the expense of Symbian. Certainly Android would not have grown at the rate it has if Symbian offered a better challenge both in OS and Devices. i would also love to see data on how many Symbian SF^1/ S60V5 purchasers then go on to buy another Symbian or Nokia device, I think it could be surprisingly low and "second time" smartphone purchasers are going to Android, whilst Nokia is only really selling to existing S40/ S60V3 users . Which is OK for a bit because they have a huge installed body of them but at some point they have to start releasing phones that are ahead or at least up with rivals rather than six months to a year late

Now that�s a way to reason, another is to look at it more relaxed. Nokia is just another company releasing another product. I mean it can�t be the first time in your life you experience
an announcment 4 months in advance. The phone will be here, and if you decide to wait for it or not is up to you my friend. I reckon you will not be easily satisfied when the phone will be released since you are building this kind of negative pressure on yourself. Relax and enjoy the phone when you get your hands on it. And there we go, because Nokia are moving so slowly and so predictably they're allowing their rivals to target them and pick off their market sectors at will. If the N8 still isn't out and Nokia can't bring any other new devices or announce the N9 (Meego) is just going to make them look ridiculous. Additionally Nokia promised one landmark phone in half one - that didn't happen much to shareholders' displeasure and another landmark in the second half. Tic toc, we haven't even achieved the first yet and frankly doesn't look like such a landmark with Android 2.2 out and Android 3.0 on the near horizon.

Nokia seem to behave as if they exist in a world where they have no serious rivals and those rivals actions or products have no bearing on Nokia's market or device plans ignoring their own loss of profitability and eroding market share. If the HTC Desire HD is the announced device and it's announced that it will be upgradable to Android 3.0 whta's Nokia's response going to be? For a start the current HTC Desire is going to get even cheaper pushing the price of the N8 before it's even launched (unless Nokia want rows of them gathering dust on shelves and I don't believe the carriers will tolerate another failure from Nokia) and even more so if the N8 is not upgradable to S^4. If the HTC HD device (whatever it's called is Android 3.0 capable it's going to put real pressure on the N9 Meego vapourware device it's going to have to be a hell of a lot better finsihed and more complete than the N900 and way better supported.

I really really hope Nokia have got some surprises (good ones not just that they haven't anything new to say) like the SF^3 devices being upgradable to SF^4 which they've been working on to bring out sooner hence the delays. Not that the phones were delayed because once again for some reason they couldn't get the supposedly most advanced and mature OS to actually work on a real device a la N97 and have spent four months trying to shoe horn it into working rather than moving forwards. After all by the Symbian Foundation's own timescale at the beginning of the year S^3 devices should've been out some and S^4 should be being hardened with releases around the turn of the year i.e. sometime around October/ November we should've been seeing advanced protos of S^4 devices whereas we don't have any S^3 (the interim fudge OS) releases at all and they probably won't be available in mass quantities until October at earliest.

Gosh I hope Nokia's got good surprises not more Powerpoint speeches for Nokia World. They really are betting the ranch on this and now because of the delays the focus is going to be on S^3 not on S^4 where the changes really are because the opposition is moving so much quicker. And I've got a horrible feeling that S^3 is going to get killed by the reviewers for being too like S60V5 which was (rightly) mocked.

Play.com have pushed back the release date of N8. It was 26th August, now it's 8th October! OCTOBER?! What a cock-up!

Which if we're being picky is Q4 not Q3 as promised after several other slippages, doesn't bode well for sales. Yes the phone maybe ready in the end for release (unlike obviously the N97 but they seemed to have taken that on board) but seemingly it is so difficult to get Symbian stable on new devices for releases that it's resulting in permanently delayed and behind the market releases.

After iPhone4, HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy S and forthcoming HTC and Dell devices about to be announced is there any upper mid to high end pent up demand that's not gone/going elsewhere apart from a few photo geeks?

It's $549 + tax in the US, with a projected end-of-September release date.

Nokia might want to look at RIM's stock price today and be more aggressive on the N8 rollout. RIM is tanking on reports of light demand for the Torch. Nokia needs the N8 to be a hit (not just to "sell well," since even the N97 "sold well"😉. That likely means more aggressive unlocked pricing around the world, and for the US (where they still insist is a high priority for them) striking a carrier deal soon. Like it or not, Americans won't pay $549 for an unlocked phone, at least not in mass quantities. Nokia tried it, and so did Google. Heck, even the $600 iPhone didn't last long.

The N8 will really only attract the Nokia/Symbian die hard fans. Millions have moved on to better and brighter things. The only thing the N8 will beat the competition is on the camera.

Too little too late for Nokia.

The CPU is no where the power of a 1GHz snapdragon (been around for ages) let alone the 1GHz hummingbird.
