N8 adhoc question

11 replies · 9,560 views · Started 10 January 2011

Hello fellow Symbian^3 users 😊

My room on campus does not have wifi so I am hoping to make my laptop a "router".

The situation is the following:

1. Internet via LAN cable in my campus room
2. Laptop connected to this lan cable
3. Created an adhoc network on my laptop : Nokia N8 128 bit WEP
4. Nokia N8 connected to this network
5. Opened web browser: "Invalid Server Name Error"

I've tried to manually input the IP, Gateway, etc and I still get that error.

Please find below the details on my current connection. Can someone give me a hand on how to make this work?

Have you entered the DNS settings? If not and you do not know them you could try google DNS. 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4.

Some Apple equipment has trouble connecting to a wireless network with a WEP password. Try disabling the password and see if you can connect and work.

If it does work then try to change the password method to WPA/WPA2.

Edit.

Another option that will cost money is to buy a wireless access point and connect it to the ethernet cable and both laptop and phone can connect wirelessly.

your phone's gateway should be the same as campus' one also, if im not wrong. else you're just connecting through your computer whose ip is different from the gateway

Thank you all for your replies. I tried with every number posted on the screen, I even changed the phone's ip address and I get the same error. I made the gateway match and still no joy. We tried connecting a second laptop and that laptop works on its own!! Takes settings without me doing anything manually 😮

Thanks, I already use connectify and it works. However, my N8 is going crazy! Connects to the network all the time!!! I've set the widgets to offline, I deleted 2 home screens and left one with widgets that have no connection with the internet, I set wlan scan to off, everything on manual, unticked retrieval days for all my mailboxes, disconnected all my social accounts, everything and the bloody thing connects to the network. It drained my battery last night 😞. Woke up to see low battery 😞.

I have to delete the destination for it to stop reconnecting!!!! God, I've never had this issue with any device and I am a long time E-Series user!!! :icon13::icon13:

It seems a few people are having that same issue.

I think the easiest thing to do would be to stop the network broadcast on your computer, restoring it network only when you want to use the N8.

This will also help with your laptop battery life when using it unplugged from power.

If possible putting your laptop to sleep when you go to sleep may also help.

I did just that. It is shocking how there is no simple option some place wifi OFF!!!! I don't want no wifi scan never, move destinations, priorities, no widgets to offline mode, no change settings in the e-mail clients, etc. I want a simple and efficient OFF setting.

Try this.
Go to:
Menu > Settings > Connectivity > WLAN

If you see a list of available networks or a message saying no networks found, the scanner is still active. In this happens then go to:

Options > Settings and then set Show Wi-Fi availability to never. This completely deactivates wi-fi scanning.

I have it turned off and I put the "WLAN SCanner" widget on one of my homescreens which makes it very simply to activate/deactive without having to go through 10 menus.

Edit

I forgot to add, do you have email set to check?

If so open the email then go to options > Settings > your mailbox > Sync Frequency. Set this to manual and if you like you can set to check between 6AM to 6PM.

My WLAN stuff only activates when I want it to. Do you have Bluetooth active if you are not using it as this can drain the battery too.

Thanks for taking the time to try and solve this issue. I've done all those and still no joy. The phone does what it wants when it comes to wifi. If I delete every mailbox and all wifi networks, it will not connect via wifi but via my O2 3.5G settings. I deleted all O2 access points and now the phone is doing what it is supposed to do.

Many of the solutions posted online and on the official N8 forum do no work for me. I also have that widget and wlan scanning is set to off, manual, always ask, widgets offline, destination priority last, e-mail retrieval, manual, unticked the days, etc. The phone is rebellious!! Does what it wants 😃

I am getting rid of my N8 if the 2 software updates won't fix the issues. Today, it crashed twice due to wifi and I was a spectator. Had to reset it twice.

I've never had so many problems with a phone, never in my entire life ...
