Really thinking about upgrading to N8

15 replies · 6,111 views · Started 22 January 2011

Hello new here, I have an iPhone 3G, and have done for the last year and a half, the closed OS is starting to get really boring!! So I have been researching the net, reading reviews, and trying to find the right phone that will suit me!

My main uses are browsing, I watch loads of YouTube videos, mp3 player is important and must have good playback quality! Call quality is a must along with build quality and a decent enough battery to power and keeping everything going..
Would the nokia n8 suit my needs? Opinions welcome!!

I've not had a nokia for years, my last nokia was a n73 im guessing the OS has changed a fair bit since this model?

A few questions about the N8

What is battery life like?

Mp3 sound quality playback? Any issues? Good bad?

Call quality? On a scale of 1/10?

I've read that there are a few niggles with the N8.. What are the main ones and will nokia adress these in the update?

Any major issues with the N8? Would you recommend to a friend?

As much info as possible on this guys, I want to make the right choice
Thanks

Battery life - for me between a day and three days, depending on usage. If its used extremely heavy, ie. virtually continual gaming/video/web playback all day (like today), then it'll go for 24 hours.

Under more normal conditions, bit of web during the working day, few hours music playback, some calls via bluetooth, its more like 2+ days.

Music sound quality is truly excellent. It definitely sounds way better than the old iPod touch, and without a doubt the best sound quality I've ever had on a mobile.

call quality - definitely a 10/10, as is signal strength. Voice quality would rate 15/10 if the networks would start implementing HD voice ....

The niggles in the device are :
- no portrait qwerty keyboard (yet)
- browser is a little basic

The browser is a mixed one; it does do some things quite well - the flash video support makes on-line video playback quite slick (things like videos embedded in gizmodo comment threads work fine), but the overall look of the browser isn't that great.

you can install Opera as an alternative browser, faster/slicker, but no multi-touch capabilities.

No hesitation in recommending the N8; if its of interest to you, no doubt you'll find the camera on it a total revelation compared that that in virtually every other phone ever made.

Thanks for the help.

Do you think nokia will keep upto date with the firmware? How many updates has there been since the N8 launch?

Could you explain the niggles you are having with the txt I
Put/touch screen keyboard? and are they planning on fixing the problem?

Can music be selected and used as ringtones from the actual phone? What about putting music on the N8? Is it just a simple case of drag and drop and the mp3 is ready to use? Reason I ask is my iPhone is so much hassle when it comes to this kind of thing, you either have to buy the ringtone or start syncing with iTunes and editing/cutting a mp3 so that it will work as a ringtone haha (headache!!)

I read that the CPU is pretty advanced? Any info on this? Does this help with loading webpages?

Thanks

There are the rumors that next update of N8 (PR1.1) is soon (may be next monday?) and PR2.0 in February (still rumors...). Actually N8 is on PR1.0 end there was not a major fw update yet. Only minor updates of the applications.

That is good to hear thanks, I don't want to pay out for something that isn't going to be updated!

How does the n8 standup against the htc desire? Not to sure on the htc brand, a mate has the wildfire and it seems like a nice phone, new firmwares come to the phone automatically (htc) does this happen with the nokia N8 aswell?

The new symbian OS is in direct comp with android now, how does it measure up? With not having a nokia for years im abit out of touch with how things are now!

Would definitley recomend the N8. Copying music over is a breeze. You can download straight to the phone from the ovi music store OR sync using ovi suite OR just plug it into your PC and drag and drop. Your choice.
The only weak points that I've noticed would be the browser which feels a bit slow sometimes but on the whole performs OK, I'm using it to post this 😉
Also worth a mention is the video playback . It seems to cope really well with the avi and mpeg4 files I've thrown at it. And I wholeheartedly agree with tje previous comments about the battery life. Getting about 2 days from normal use and at least one full day of pretty heavy use.

Hope this helps.

Nokia never confirmed PR 1.1 and to be honest, it fits the E7 launch. The E7 will launch with PR 2.0 so what is the point in giving 1.1 if we are in desperate need for 2.0?
😮

The more I read on google about the faults in the software the more it is putting me off buying it!

Phone turns itself of when a webpage freezes?
Ovi has to be put back on the phone after master reset along with most of the apps
On the phone?
Nokia plan to faze out symbian 3, will nokia's new OS be downloadble to the n8?
Are these old or current issues? Have they sorted them out with the firmware yet?

Never happened to me (around a month of use of the N8). So if it happens, not very frequent I guess.

I just don't understand is why people do "master resets". The phone is already quite stable so I don't think this is an issue. But if it happens, what you described is of course a problem.

Nokia said there will be no Symbian 4, but Symbian will be a continuous process of improvement. I bought my unblocked N8 to get those updates, which I hope will continue for at least the 2 years of life of the mobile (its very usual for Nokia to provide updates for quite a long time for their handsets).

Just to add,

Nokia have no plans of fazing out Symbian (There'll be major fools to do so considering the amount of penetration it has!!) Haven't heard anything in that regard.

Never had to do a master reset but people that have done it report loosing ovi store. Don't think you'll ever need to do a master reset. If you do a hard reset, (*#7370#) you don't loose ovi store/map.

Batterylife is as mentioned above

Copying MP3s is a simple matter of drag and drop. I only use ovi suite to back up/sync contacts and messages and download maps for ovi maps.
I manage podcasts through media monkey and mp3s through a simple drag and drop
(All via bluetooth by the way - no need to connect cables)

No potrait keyboard but don't really mind, I prefer potrait T9 for on hand use and use swype in landscape.

Other home/menu screens are also available to give a more android, iOS, WP7 user interface experience. In this case, I'm thinking SPB shell, Grid, Ndesk, Gdesk

Browser is a bit rubbish - but I use a synced up Opera for most things and Opera Mini for browsing - it's extremely fast. No multi-touch which again I don't mind as I much prefer one hand use whilst in potrait - and double tapping works fine.

WebTV is there for youtube and other web tv media (iplayer, national geographic, e-online etc)

Any audio file can be used as a ringtone for the whole selected theme or a particular contact/group

MP3 playback - excellent using the ear phones that come with the unit. I use a bluetooth headset which is also excellent

Call quality - excellent with both GSM and VOIP calls using wifi

Camera - still being amazed!

Only Niggle is the browser. Not a major issue tho with Opera and UC browser to choose from - however gonna be rectified soon in the next update coming in feb
No potrait qwerty - not a niggle for me but might be for some - gonna be rectified soon in the next update coming in feb

Thanks for clearing some of my questions up.
I went to the phone shop, didn't have the chance to have a play with the n8, shop was busy, shame! I did have a good look at it and if I do desire to go for the n8 I won't be getting it n silver LOL!!

The other phone that caught my eye was the moto defy, seemed nice in the hand but that White band that goes around the edge isn't to good, but after getting back and comparing the defy with the n8 on the gsm website.. The defy falls on specs to the n8.

Will the n8 be able to take maegoo OS?

Ok cool, what is the social app like (facebook) on the n8? Does it run smoothly? Not to fussed about twitter as I don't bother with that!

Can you sync your contacts with facebook photos?

I don't use facebook but i'm always seeing lots of facebook related apps in the ovi store so I'm sure one of those will be to your liking
