When..

I've seen no trace of it here in Spain. Neither in shops or Service provider's Catalog's. Nothing, I hope to have a look at it soon. I'll tell you when I do.

You'd think so... I'm dying to see what Nokia have cooked up for their next s60 phone (not the n-gage)... In theory (given how long it's been since the 7650 release) it should piss all over the siemens... but we'll see.

Waiting for the next Sereis 60 can take forever. Imagine when Nokia will announce the next sereis 60 phone, the SX1 will be out. If you gonna wait for the Nokia S60....Siemens will announce its new model. Are you gonna wait for that too? You can wait forever this way!

s60 phones are expensive, my 7650 is gonna have to last me a long time given how much I paid for it 😊 so yeah, I can't afford not to wait 😊

But series 60 won't last for ever! It's going to be outdated sooner or later, in maybe a couple of years or so I believe. If we get to see a new phone every 1,5 years, I guess we won't see but only few!

Windows on PC are never outdated. Why should Series 60 be. It went from version 1.0 to version 1.2.2 (SX1) with always new features implemented. Like xHTML etc.

I do think that s60 will be outdated, just like win3.1 became win95, 98, me, xp etc... is UIQ not the next version of symbian os?

The newest Symbian Version is v7.x (not sure about smaller version changes), UIQ is based on v7.0, Series60 on v6.1 (afaik), but UI and OS are separated. I suppose that it should be possible that Series60 interface is ported to v7.0, but i wouldn't bet that this grants app-compatibility.

One of the recently announced SymbianOS 7.0s (note the 's'😉 goals is binary compatibility with SymbianOS 6.1, so...

"Ready for Christmas Market" doesn't mean November.
Christmas starts for Operator way earlier, say September.
Metrowerks announced their SX1 DevKit for August.

FYI, OzBert

I emailed Siemens in middle east asking about the exact release date of the SX1, they replyed that the phone is scheduled to be released in September but still not for sure!!!

Can't wait to see it 😃

In the June Carphone Warehouse Catalogue UK it says the SX1 is "Expected August". However their published availibility dates have not been that reliable in the past 😊

Siemens today confirmed to me that SX1 is planned to be launched in August.

(Orophin Anwarunya: M55 is available as well. At least in Germany...)

It doesn't really matter when the SX1 is released now. They had a window to release the device, but they have left it too late. Who would want to buy a S60 (v1.0) device when next to it there is a S60 (v2.0) device, with better features, Symbian 7.0s, Java MIDP 2.0, and more. The Nokia 6600 has killed the SX1 dead in the water.

Well, the 6600 can't actually compete with the SX1 8)

SX1 has built-in radio
SX1 has much faster GPRS
SX1 has slightly larger display
SX1 will get MIDP 2.0 before 6600 is launched
SX1 is lighter and smaller

On 6600 you have to remove the battery to change MMC and you even have to remove the MMC to change SIM. Great Nokia... 😉

Valid points molna but wasn't the display larger just because extra space was needed for the battery indicator,so no fullscreen, correct me if I'm wrong.

BTW:The SX1 might be packed with more features or even better overall but that does not mean better sales.Go and explain the fact of faster GARS to Joe "Me wants the new nokia" Average.

It's not fullscreen, so you will be able to check battery status e.g. during gameplay, pretty nice feature 😃

Of course the Nokia will sell better, but SX1-owners will have a better phone than 6600-owners, that's whats important.

I agree that the SX1 might be better then the 6600,but will see that for sure when they are both released.

Maybe, but maybe not, personally,i'd prefer good old fullscreen 😊
Well, the 6600 can't actually compete with the SX1 8)
Of course it can.
SX1 has built-in radio
Yes, that is an advantage of the SX1.
SX1 has much faster GPRS
On PAPER yes, but in the real world it makes no difference at all. Can you name one network that supports class 10 GPRS?
SX1 has slightly larger display
So what, you can't actually take advantage of the extra 12mm.
SX1 will get MIDP 2.0 before 6600 is launched
Doubtful.
SX1 is lighter and smaller
LOL, seems like you're running out of arguments, Molna. They are practically the same size.
On 6600 you have to remove the battery to change MMC and you even have to remove the MMC to change SIM. Great Nokia... 😉
Agree, that's really lame of Nokia, but can the SX1 "hotswap" MMC's?

And you actually forgot the one real strong point the SX1 has over the 6600; STEREO sound output. I can't believe Nokia keep leaving that out..

I'd say these two devices are really strong competitors, pretty much identical feature and size wise, but I think the Nokia will sell better because of the NAME and also because of the keypad layout and more "classical" looks.

Anyway, as far as I'm conserned none of these S60 devices can ever replace my P800. But it's fun to see all the new Symbian devices coming out..

Some might like a radio, so I'll give you that one 😉

SX1 has much faster GPRS

As someone else pointed out, it's not supported by networks, so it's pointless. A much more important GPRS feature is support for multiple primary/secondary PDP contexts. The 6600 has this and the SX1 does not.

SX1 has slightly larger display

Once more pointless. Applications can't use this area. Infact this is a bad feature as many poeple don't want this area shown unless its related to the application.

SX1 will get MIDP 2.0 before 6600 is launched

Will you stop keep saying this rubbish! MIDP 2.0 is built into Symbian at OS level, it is only in 7.0s, the SX1 does not have 7.0s, and will not have MIDP 2.0. If you have some proof show us, I would love to see it. But I guess this is from the same siemens guy who told you that the SX1 would be the first phone with Java JSR-135 API 😃 😃 Nokia 3650 😃

SX1 is lighter and smaller

Geez... there is nothing in it!

And lets not forget one other major point... S60 Version 2.0! This will have a whole load of improvments over version 1.0 that we don't even know about yet.

Also, S60 V2 is backward compatable with V1, but is V1 forward compatable with V2? The 6600 will get a load of stuff written for it since it will sell loads more than the SX1, and I don't think you can guarantee they will run on the older S60 phones.

The only really bad point in my book is mono audio 😞 that will make me think twice before swapping it with my P800. What were Nokia thinking about? It couldn't have been that hard to do, siemens did it! 😊 (only teasing!)

Most network providers support GPRS class 10 or class 12, including all UK providers 8)

And yes, SX1 WILL get MIDP 2.0 before the 6600 has launched 😉

moamoa: SX1 does not use S60 v1.0, but v1.2.2

Main reason for me not to buy the 6600 would be the toy/plastic feeling. Still have to use it at work though :-?
