Ok, after failing to get a net connection in the way the 7650 and 3650 do. I decided to phone Nokia about it 😊
After a while I got them to work out what I was talking about and they informed me that; yes the 6600 will not do this, and no, it's not something they will be looking into.
This is bad news for all I think.
So, we need one of the more tallented programmers out there to do something about this. It must be possible.
I remain hopeful !
It is not totally clear what you are talking about.
If it is about using the 6600 as a bluetooth modem to the Internet, that is of course possible and fully supported by Nokia. Just install Nokia Modem Options (which is on the 6600 CD) and you will be able to use the 6600 to browse the web.
If you are talking about using the 6600 as a bluetooth modem from a handheld, I know that this is no problem from PocketPC handhelds, as long as you use the correct init strings.
From Palm handhelds it is a bit more complex, but there is a very recent thread that explains how to do it.
Regards.
He is talking about sharing his PC's internet connection via BT with the 6600.It was is trick/tweak/hack that works on every other Series 60 and even UIQ Symbian smartphones but not the 6600,yet.
Ghostdog is right. It is possible to connect the phone via bluetooth the a PC which has an active internet connection; the phone would be able to access the internet via the PC.
Nokia have removed this function from the new 6600, I was informed that this is something that they would not be supporting. I assume the networks have pressured nokia about it, because with the ability to do this, users were able to have mobile (ok limited to 10 meters mobility) with no airtime charges.
I assume that the change made by nokia is just some small tweak to the communications stack or protocol, It may be possible to install a small app onto the phone to ressurect the feature. Or it may be necssary to run something on both the phone and the PC.
Either way, I think that if someone could get this working and working well, the app could be sold for a small fee to almost every user of these phones..... a nice potential for some profit 😊
Come on programmers..... you know you like a challenge !
I cannot see what good there is in doing that. Since you need to stay within a few meters from your own PC, it so much better to just use the PC for browsing... why use the phone?
Anyway, I hope someone will come with a solution for you.
I for one would pay money for a fix that would let me use my 6600 to connect via Bluetooth to my PC and then surf the internet from the PC Broadband connection.
There is a good reason for doing that: The kids are on the pc, (and I would like to do it in the bathroom!)
Agreed. That could be a possibility.
However, I doubt that the bluetooth connection could allow you to do that with a wall (or bathroom's door) between you and the PC. A bluetooth headset, for example, would not be able to keep you in a conversation under such conditions...

The connection would be maintained.
It certainly will,i remember the old days, when AAS had a IRC channel on undernet.I used to IRC from my bathroom which was on the 1rst floor. The Bluetooth equiped PC was on the second 😃
Oh, that's surprising.
Considering that bluetooth class 2 goes maximum to 10 meters of free air, and that in practical tests bluetooth headsets start breaking up the conversation beyond 5 meters of free air, I find it really surprising that you can get a bluetooth signal between two floors, unless the PC is exactly above your head.
Could be different if we talk about class 1 devices, which go up to 100 meters, but the 6600, like all phones, is class 2.
Anyway, if you can make it work, I am happy for you.
I've even tried it from my kitchen which is about 8 meters away from my PC and behind three doors and one wall.IRC is fine but transfering files takes really long but yes,it works.I'm using a MSI Bluetooth adapter and a Nokia 7650.
Yep my HDW-2 headset cannot work properly if I leave the room where the phone is, however when I work with bluetooth data, the signal goes much further.
Maybe data broadcasts use some sort of data correction technique whereas audio doesn't? Data = digital, audio = analogue perhaps?
BTW - as you may or may not have read in a previous thread, I officially got my 6600 today (although I've had it a few days, today is the first day I've used it), so I'll be looking for ways to regain "bluetooth internet" support for the 6600.
Cheers
Just an idea - have we determined if the "fault" lies with the phone itself or the mRouter? If it's the latter, has anyone tried using the 7650/3650 PC Suite (and mRouter) with the 6600? Any success?
j2k: I have tried to connect the 6600 to the 7650 datasuite with no success.
The root of the problem is in the handset itself. From my conversations with nokia I got the idea they had made a change to the way in which the phone recognises it has a connection to the net.
If you have used the Wireless IRC app on the 7650 you may know that for it to work over the bluetooth for internet, you tell it 'none' for the access point. But the 6600 seems to only enable it's DNS or perhaps IP stack once a listed connection has been established.
This is conjecture of course. Still I'm happy people are interested enough to think about this and hopefully discover a workaround or patch.
Cheers
Sorry to drag up an old topic, but I was wondering if anyone had got this one figured out yet, or if it looks like an impossibility.
Don't think it is "impossible" - just improbable unless some talented JOE sorts it - I would be prepaired to pay for such an app as our "family" PC is booked weeks in advance lol.
I've done a lot of reading up on the subject and it would appear that the only way to do it would be with a browser that is specifically designed to pull a internet pages from a pc and bypass the 6600's usual connection procedures. That is to say the browser is not designed for internet use as such, merely a bridge between the phone and the PC's Internet Explorer. This app would function fairly similar to the Nokia PC Suite, only be designed to exchange HTML pages via the link (bluetooth most probably). In order for this to work you would almost certainly need a plugin for the PC Internet Explorer to allow it's use from another source. The problem with all this is that such a plugin would have to be registered with Microsoft to be legal. Also there is a very limited market for this and the production costs for a legal solution would be too high to make it all viable. Therefore I doubt we will ever see a legal solution to it all. The only hope is that some smart dude somewhere decides to write the software for fun and not financial gain. There must be other people out there who want to do this, and hopefully someone who has the know-how, this does mean the chances are extremely slim though. This is about the limit of my knowledge on the subject (I'm a PC technician, not a programmer and am very new to symbian technology).
A browser would be OK,but there is a lot more to internet then just www.A lot cooler would be if someone wrote some sort of a proxy/gateway application.
Yes, definately. It would also be a far simpler app to create than my suggestion. The only problem then would be if the 6600's hardware would allow the process. From what I can gather it wouldn't. There must be someone out there who knows the score on this one, rather than my guesswork. If anyone knows something please post it.
I don't see any problem with the hardware, its obviusly a software limitation since it already works on other Series 60 1.x devices.
You could well be right, I hope so anyway. I'm just going by the things I've read in various places on the net as I don't know too much about symbian phones. If I think about it sensibly though, it does seem more likely to be a software based problem. It's obviously going to be in the ROM though, and unlikely any official flash will cure that one. You seem to know your stuff, what do you rate the chances of a solution?
I have also tried everything with no success.
I paired 6600 with my PC, I activated the LAN between the phone and PC, I installed a web proxy on my PC and configured the phone to use the proxy IP and ports... Still nothing 😞

Thats because it is not possible - nokia have removed the ability to do this (pressure from mobile sp's), if you read the post you will see we are moaning about this fact and saying that we hope that someone can develop software to enable us to use home connection to surf.
The new Nokia 9500 has a feature called IP passtrough.Basicaly, its an option to use a PC's internet connection. The 3660 can do it,the N-Gage can do it,they all had similar release dates with the 6600.I think its another Series 60 2.0 bug and not pressure from Mobile sp's.
The 6600 was released before the 3660 if I'm not mistaken. If this is the case, and the 3660 can do it, then it looks as if it isn't a case of the service providers putting pressure on Nokia. This is a pretty good indication (although not proof admittedly) that the 6600 should be capable with the correct software. Hopefully there is enough people interested in this to come up with a solution.
I was told it was pressure from SP's but maybe not - perhaps its just NOKIA who dont want to release a phone that doesnt have a least one shite or missing feature.
I have BT access point and it works for me.
Check www.bluegiga.com/wrapas/
Yes, it works fine for me too.
You need a bluetooth access point, not one of the USB sticks.
Then it will work!!!!!
Thats great if you already have one.
If not then............well not much good really. Not paying for it - which is the whole point of this thread (IMO).
