I've been thinking since I've had my 7650 how could you possibly upgrade the ram or add a ram expansion.
During my morning daze at work it hit me.
The 7650 has to have a serial send/receive some where for doing flash upgrades. Then it dawned on my thats probably what the 3 pin near the power connector might be (ground / send / receive).
So then I thought how could you possible make something practicle.
Well see below my 3D renders. Ok they aint the best but have to be up early for work tommorow and I wanted to get my idea posted up.
I used a full size Memory Stick as thats what I generally use, but any small memory modules would be practicle. Memory Stick would be great for me as then I could send pics from my DSC 707F camera 😉 by putting the Memory Stick in my phone.
Here is the basic concept:
This would replace the battery cover.
As you can see it has an extra little which lines up with the connector near the power.
Memory stick is inserted by taking the cover off and inserted up underneath (just to keep it nice and tidy).
You will also notice a circular battery cover underneath. As there is no way of getting internal power to it I thought using flat lithium cells would solve the problem as the power used by Memory Products would be minimal. Plus no drain on the phone!
PS. I have no skills to build this.. So dont ask.. It's just a concept..
cunning plan all it needs is the hardware to decode from serial to an input to your chosen memory device and a driver for it to go on the phone and convince it it has a memory module. So you need a programmer and a techy, would be an interesting project though and I guess a fair few people would buy one.

The 3 pins near the power connector are just Vcc, ground, and charge control for the desktop charger.
To access the fbus/mbus connectors for flashing you have to partially disassemble the phone, they are on the back, just below the camera, but UNDER the keyboard slide, which has to be removed.
If someone could pull this off, it would be great, But I can't wait that long.
Bring on the P800.
hrmm well id buy one
and it bamboozles me why nokia didnt add this feature in
I guess it didnt want 92xx sales disturbed or possible sales of the 3610 or whatever it is, thats comming to be disrupted.
Eitherway id definitely buy an addon.
Nice job mate, nice work with the renders for extra effect 😊
sprry.. where's the renders?
You will wait for this solution till hell freezes over ! 😃
Now seriously, on 9210 the expansion pins for the smart media memory module are connected directly on the processor.
Even if memory over serial port would be possible, how much performance would you expect from a communication running at 115.200BPS ? Anyway, it's not possible via serial, anyway 😉

He added them as attachments, which are only viewable if you are a registered member, not to guests.

Anything is possible, look at USB it's a serial interface and surprise, surprise where do you plug in your memory readers (PS and I still have a Serial PCMCIA reader) 😉
Just a pitty the bottom connector is for a desktop charger 😞
I didn't even know there was a desktop charger 😮ops: I would not have posted it knowing that.
Why don't you post it up to Nokia to review your design, you could make a great fortune out of it.
I think it will be a great ideal for your design too, hopefully someone out there will build us a device something like that.

Well... You could make a replacement for the keypad portion of the phone so you can get access to the pins. Bit complicated tho...
Or you could open up the phone, connect a flat cable to the pins and then close the phone up again. This one wouldn't be such a large engineering effort but wouldn't look as clean. The flat plastic ribbon cable you get in a CD player for example should be thin enough? I've not opened up my 7650 so I've got no idea where the connector exactly is.
More realistically, there is a another possible method of upgrading the memory. On certain PocketPC PDAs people have upgraded the total memory available by soldering in larger capacity memory chips. I've had my iPAQ 3630 upgraded to 64MB by PocketPC Techs. No idea if it's viable for the 7650 to be upgraded though. The extra address lines needed might not exist.

wow man I wouldn tbe game to take my 7650 apart, its like a sacred object, even though I did go out lastnight and drop it 😞 lucky it was only a fall of about 30cms and onto a nice soft carpet, but you get my point
Damn drinking large amounts of alcohol and operating thes ephones isnt good for the phone, but funny with the camera :P
Anyhow you get my point.
is possible to connect a (theoric) bluetooth microdrive or bluetooth memory card to 7650(?!?). I WANT MORE MEMORY!!!!! 64MB, 128MB, 1GB 500000GB! HAAAARG!

Acording to SeleQ
its flash memory, I would be interested in what flash device is fitted and if we could possibly change it for a bigger device,
has any one got any pics of the inside, sure I could spot the device, I am pretty sure its going to be a BGA device which would be a bitch to swap, not impossible but hard 😊

It's a 32 mega BGA flash device. Sure, it can be changed, and after you do let me know what does the phone after exactly 32 seconds from powering it on 😊
Ok going render a BlueTooth Pocket memory version..
Was thinking what would be cool and marketable (damn too many years spent around advertising people).
1. USB Socket
2. Memory Slot
3. Bluetooth (der of course!)
So idea would be battery powered could sit on the back of the phone like the other one I guess (probably most practicle too!). Or stick it in your pocket.
USB socket is so that you can plug it into your PC and access the memory stick (or what ever) etc directly and it also becomes a bluetooth receiver transmitter for your PC.
Hows this idea sound?
Ok I know bluetooth aint quick before someone gets on that bandwagon. But does anyone give a s#$t providing we can have some form of storage?
Portable storage! execelent. You may have the problem of other people accessing you data, would you not??
I work in electronics and have some BGA kit at work, if its just a case of upping it from a 4mb device to a 8/16/32mb itcould be done it all depends on how its addressed, not sure if the bigger ones are the same pin outs just bigger, just a though

It may well be possible, but who is willing to rip apart their 7650 to find out?

toshiba is developing a device like that.
http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/2002_04/pr1701.htm
5gb 😊
"Expecting to release the Bluetooth Pocket Server later this year, Toshiba anticipates a price of about 50,000, or about US$385 at today's exchange rate"
http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0204/24.toshiba.php
I WANT ONE......NOW!!!!!!!
I'll send them an email for the expected release date and price and post the reply on here.
I've sent the email and i'll let you all know once I have a response from them.
Looking round, there is a few different news peices on it. It looks like it will be out sometime this year and the expected price is $360 US.
But these are from April this year, and things change so I'll wait and see what they say.
I'm not sure if i'll be willing to pay around 200 for more memory when I doubt I will use anywere near 5GB.

Looks like you didn't get the point..of course if the pinout matches you can change. Now the thing is Nokia keeps a copy of the IMEI in the flash device. If you change it you'll get a nice "??????????????" IMEI number and the phone will reset itself every 32 seconds (has a security watchdog). Now, if you're willing to ruin the phone, go ahead, but personally i would NOT recommend that. :-?
Yeah, to me it sounds like lunacy trying to 'upgrade' the memory like that. I owuld sooner wait for a BT enabled hard disk ... I dont think it will be long before you find Archos or someone else releases such a device. Would be a sure hit. But would probably also require better support on the 7650 for different BT drivers (i.e. extending the memory is on a different scale from enabling a modem connection or transferring files).
I NEED MORE MEMORY!!
Not "want" NEED, thats N-E-E-D!!
Now as i read from the above posts, you cant just rip open the phone and add more memory right? Cause i was planning to do this next weekend 😞
Well not me, i have no info on stuff like that, i barley operate the 7650 😃
:P
Since theres alotta smart people here, i wanted to ask: anybody here know how to make programs for the 7650? Or modify exsisting ones?
Since there was alotta talk about MP4 video recording and capture, i got this sweet idea to "make' (talk is cheap 😃) a program just like the Hantro video capture, that records more FPS and records SOUND, and also, a thought i see really convienent, that when you open the program you see a viewfinder like the one in the camera, and press the joystick to "start" recording, (hold it to record (you get to see the little red light) or just press it once).
As i said, its easy to say, so damn hard to do!
Any voluntering Companies (Psiloc..etc) perhaps???
😃
wait wait
also add one more thing when you close the keypad the video recording program should warn the user that the camera is in standby mode or something like that
cos with this hantro video recording when you record with keypad closed the program still running
and about the viewfinder bfore it's start to record is the nicest thing
A few people have already started to "Modify" the existing hantro program. Thinking about it, if you had more FPS it would use alot more memory so it would be better to get the memory situation sorted out first.
I'm still waiting for Toshiba to get back to me.
ok if this is to go in your pocket and is always being accessed via bluetooth wont this drain the phone battery ?
Even more so lets say ! just like if you left it infront of the infra red for a couple of hours ! ? the battery would be dead in no time at all !
