V4.09.1 is available in Greece now at last. I don't have it yet on my 6600, but reportedly it has improved speed, corrected mms presentation playback (it used to be problematic when the mms originated from certain models), corrected Greek character handling in SMS and has corrected voice command problems among other things. What's more, it's now possible to write unlimited video clips with sound using the ETI camcoder. One thing it has done wrong, though, is that now you cannot install several applications if the menu language is in Greek, something that did not happen before!
UPDATE: Reportedly there is a minor package available for 4.09.1 with which this last problem is corrected.
What's noticeable is that you cannot send any files of type mid/sis/jar via either Bluetooth or Infrared any more, either to another phone or a PC! The phone itself never allowed this, but with previous software versions you could do it via a third party file manager.
I understand this functionality could be used to distribute copyrighted material, but then so could trasferring images (there are quite a few copyrighted ones out there) and text (if quoted from copyrighted e.g books)!!! And let's not forget there are thousands of free midi files out there, too!
Once again I am sad Nokia decides to further handicap its phones. My feeling is they care about chargeable services so much that they are willing to sacrifice everything else. Just imagine Microsoft doing the same thing, preventing Windows from allowing copying or sending (e.g. via email) certain file types, just like midi files! I wonder how logical that would seem!
Let me make clear that I am not trying to promote piracy here, I just feel that my smartphone is slowly turning in into a ... dumbphone! :frown:

In order to make this conversation useful to other not Greek speaking readers, I will answer in English.
In previous versions, if you wrote Greek characters in an SMS, they were treated as unicode and a single message could only contain 70. Larger messages broke up in more than one SMS. One workarounnd was to use the SMS Timer application, which kept Greek characters in the GSM alphabet and thus you could send 160 characters/SMS.
I have not tried ETI camcoder, I have heard from various people that it DOES work with sound now, and records unlimited videos. I don't know what version.
The 6600 with the new software CAN receive those file types, but it CANNOT SEND them.
Firmware versions are installed at Nokia service centers, for free if the phone is still under warranty. You cannot do this at home, it requires special hardware/software that is not commercially available. You MIGHT be able to find a service center that will accept to downgrade your firmware, but it may not be free of charge.
Where can i find out if there is a Nokia Sevice Center in my city.I live in Romania, Bucharest.
Bye

Sorry i asked you in Greek, you are right.
-What is this SMS Timer application you have talked about ? Where can i download it?
-Will i be able with this firmware prog. to send pictures (*jpeg - not mid/jar or sis files, there is no need in sending them to PC anyway) to PC via bluetooth?
-What do U mean by saying you cannot install several applications if the menu language is in Greek. You mean *.sis programs? If this is true, that means that we have to remain in the currently progs we have installed...(A solution would be to change the menu language in English, right?) 😮
😉
Sparxxx: Al dracului să fiu dacă ştiu 😃 dar dacă găseşti unul să-mi spui şi mie. Poate, doar poate... ar trebui să căutăm la www.nokia.ro / I'll be damned if I know but if you manage to find an NSC please tell me about it. Maybe, just maybe, we ought to have a look at www.nokia.ro
Haris,
A simple search for sms timer here found this: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/20955/&highlight=sms+timer. It is a program that schedules SMS to be sent at a secified time.
Yes, you CAN send images to the PC or another phone.
Yes, I mean .sis files. You must either turn the phone language to English to install them by simply sending them via BT, or use PC Suite to instll them regardless the language.
Hi guys.
Does the new firmware fix the bluetooth bug that causes battery drain on headsets?
Also, when writing an SMS does the 'to' line now default to number mode?
Cheers
Will.
Will, I've read indeed that the 'to' line defaults to number mode. I don't know about the BT issue...

Is this available in the UK yet?

Hey Gary,
Yes mate, I got mine upgraded in Huntingdon in the UK.
Best idea is to phone your nearest Nokia Service Centre to check if they have it.

Sorry I don't understand, this is just with Greek phones or all over the world?
If its not possible to send files than I will not upgrade my telephone
is this firmware avalaible in MALAYSIA???
Whether or not a firmware revision is available in one's country one should check with local Nokia Service Centre.

I don't think this has anything to do with the phone language, but I can't tell for sure. The sis installation problem was clearly language dependent, but there is a 4.09.1 "minor package" (whatever that is) now that solves this issue.
Wirelessly posted (Nokia6600/1.0 (4.09.1) SymbianOS/7.0s Series60/2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.0)
The annoying non vibrating for messages in silent mode is fixed in v.4.09.1
Damn it. I want to upgrade but everything's closed for Easter.
You usually have to go to a Nokia Service Center where they take your mobile and upgrade your firmware.
Note: You shall lose everything that is stored on the phone.

Why would Nokia restrict people from sending Mid & Sis files etc?
I hope this isnt true, whats the problem? Is it to do with piracy prevention etc?
Yup.
Piracy prevention, of course.
Piracy prevention and overall free and unrestricted software distribution.
I wonder how this will go down for Openbit, with their License Manager software and for Psiloc whose applications have a menu option to be transferred to other Nokia users, so that people can share them because let's face it, not everybody that has a 6600 knows how to install software or wants to install the PC Suite or is in any way geeky enough to purchase a CR or BT dongle...

Maybe for the same reason it does NOT allow sending MIDI files via MMS in all its phones (?!).
It is very true, I am afraid, and it's the reason I haven't decided to upgrade my 6600.

Anyone who's fone has this "minor package" already?
I heard that all the latest version of the flashing software (phoenix I think) can backup your personal data (S40 & S60), but all the CNSP's arnt using it as it is very tempermental.
It was Ok with S40 coz you could just use Content Copier to suck all your important stuff out of ya phone.
With Pc Suite v6 this now provides support for 6620, does all aspects of Pc Suite 6 work correctly. I know application installer works fine but what all about the other applications?
BTW, what is this "minor package"? Where does it say "minor"?
Lets not start a new thread for every bug fix in this firmware.Thread merged

i don't think there's a need to upgrade if u don't need it and also if the phone is working perfectly fine.
