Hey Gary,
Yes mate, I got mine upgraded in Huntingdon in the UK.
Best idea is to phone your nearest Nokia Service Centre to check if they have it.
Ian
Which centre did you take it to. I had mine upgraded to 3.49.2 by the mail in centre recommended by Nokia in Nottingham.
Andy
You could send any file if you rename a .mid file to a .jpg so it manipulates the phone thinking its a picture. After its sent, jus rename the file back to .mid.

Hi,
I took mine to Communicaid LTD in Huntingdon, Tel : 01480 431431
Done it while I waited, inside of 20 minutes.
The firmware version you have sounds like the Orange version, don't know what version Orange will have for their customers but just have it flashed to the new V4.xx

Not bothered about it being the Orange version, I only got that one as that was the latest at the time. Does your have any customisations or is it a bog standard version. Do you have the standard bookmrks for downloads as mine has lost them. If so could you post them or email direct -
I thought the name Communicaid was familer... Sometime ago I sent a Nokia there but for the last few years I have used a local centre. I sent my 6600 to CRC in Nottingham and just noticed that Communicaid are part of the CRC Group. So that explains that and according to their site they are responsible for training the Service Centres on behalf of Nokia so they should know what they are doing.
i sold my upgraded 6600 and bought a old firmware versioned 6600 again,it had a serious problem except for the bluetooth and infrared locking but after 150mb of apps on the phone the installer would not install and remove apps on the manager ,i tested with 3 different mmc cards 2x256mb and my 512mb mmc,i formated my 6600 many times and it still would not fix it with 150mb or more with installed apps on the new firmware (6600)...im sticking with 3.42 version from now on!!!!
As I've read in another forum (would it be fair to mention it?), firmware v4.09.1 blocks the following from beign sent either via Bluetooth or via Infrared:

This was a list i\of the file types that the 6600 cannot
send any more! I have a feeling you are referring to sending files from the PC to the 6600, which is OK. Please clarify...
Hello all...I understand that many says that 4.09.1 will disable sending of .sis, .mid and .jar files thru BT of IR. Does that means even I use FExplorer or SeleQ I also can't send? Pls confirm this as I'm now 3.42.1 yet to upgrade.

With version 3.42.1 it is possible to send all of the above file types ONLY via a third party file manager (like SeleQ or FExplorer). With 4.09.1 it is NOT possible even with those...
Strangely enough, out of dozens of people who I know have upgraded to 4.09.1, there are two that reported they could actually send everything, including those file types! I did a full binary file comparison of every file in Z:\System folder of an upgraded 6600 that cannot send those file types, and one that can. ALL files were identical!!! What gives?? :? I don't have reason to doubt what those people reported, but it doesn't make any sense...
I can confirm that on my 4.09.1 version I too cannot send some of the files mentioned by BT or email but why is this a problem.... :?

It may not seem like a problem to you, but I consider it to be a huge problem for people who would like to share sounds and applications with friends - and I am not talking about piracy or copyright violations here: there are millions of free midi files out there and thousands of free & trial applications either in the .sis or .jar "format". Some of my friends do not even have PC connectivity for their phones and I usually transfer files to their phone.
Most of all, it's a matter of principle to me: why should Nokia cripple a smartphone like this? Why prevent all the above file types in the new firmware? Would you like to see Microsoft doing something similar in Windows, preventing certain file types from being sent even via email? I purchased this expensive phone mostly because it had an "open" O/S and it could be used almost like a pc. Taking away its capabilities in newer versions of the firmware is at least unfair, not to say anything worse...

Very agree to what u said...so I think I will not upgrade at the moment...but isn't there any software for longer video recording with sound for v3.42.1 ??
Hi,
Does anybody know if you can modify the default in the to:-field from numeric to alphanumeric (sms/mms) with Firmware 4.09.1? The alphanumeric from the old firmware was ok for me, so I think it has to be configurable, otherwise I wouln't upgrade my 6600!
I think Nokia has done a very bad job with this firmware-upgrade. Some very old bugs aren't fixed and such thinks in the to:-field are changed!
A quote from the FExplorer website http://users.skynet.be/domi/tipstricks.html
with some new firmware, some users have reported that the 'send command' (thru bluetooth, IR, ...) fails; it's due to a 'copyrigth protection' introduced in the new OS (!!!!), this happens only with some kind of files (eg: .SIS), in such case, simply rename the file (eg: wtih .SIS_ ) before trying to send them.
I know Nokia are being annoying with this fix but you can easily get round it. I'm far more annoyed you still can't set different SMS tones for different people. WAKE UP NOKIA!
Yes, that's true: You can rename a .sis file to something like .si or .s and it will be sent and installed like a charm to another S60 phone. But other types like .jar and .mid have to be renamed back to their original extension when received, and as far as I know, other phones (e.g. Series 40) do not allow this extension renaming at all! :frown:
petran, have you tried to send sis, jar or mid files through zipman app?
btw, havent seen any similar thread on myphone just splitted threads
jojo wrote:petran, have you tried to send sis, jar or mid files through zipman app?btw, havent seen any similar thread on myphone just splitted threads
I have decided not to upgrade after realizing the new firmware restrictions! I have seen these problems on other 6600s, but I have not tried Zipman. I don't believe it has anything to do with the Application, though, its restricted by the firmware.
You can find 2 big relevant threads and a few smaller ones at "myphone", in the Series 60 section. This issue has been discussed a lot there! I wonder how you've missed it so far! :?
I just updated my phone and relise it was a mistake, is it possible to downgrade to the older version?
The one advantage is the MMS presentations are imporved, i can now view pictures with the sound which was not possible before when i received MMS messages from certain phones.
Problems are when i turn on the phone, the nokia logo with the hands joining is sticking, and the sound cuts out...can that be sorted?
I also prefer have ABC option as default when writing messages, cause who knows their numbers all off by heart...its silly doing it that way, i liked typing the recipitent in right away, without having to change it first.
Also, the white box when entering your pin is ruff, its to big to fit its border - how poor is that.
I do like how the phone is much quicker however, but i also prefered the battery and signal bars before....
can you downgrade to the 3.42 version?

Hi SAS,
Can you please (or someone) post a screen shot of the idle screen with the new firmware.
Thanks
😊
In theory there should be no problem with downgrading the firmware. I dont know much about this but i assume they format the phone and then flash it with x. version firmware. Couldnt tell you a definate 100% answer though

Downgrading is possible but very difficult since you need very expensive equipment and the firmware itself which is not public. It would be easy as hell if you work in Nokia or know someone who does 😉
My phone wasnt formatted. I was told its memory would be wiped, but it wasnt, but it has been updated.
Does anyone know how to stop the nokia hands at startup from sticking, and the sound breaking up after this firmware update?

has this info been verified with those users who upgraded and/or with nokia, that you cannot send this files via ir and/or bt to another capable phone??and if true, why call it an UPGRADE,its a damn downgrade to hell from nokia
hi, erm this is a simple question really, I know this is wot u have been discussing but apart from renaming a .SIS file or .JAR etc, could u not send it some other way because I want to send a file from my ngage to another phone which does not use symbian. (Obvioulsy it isnt a .SIS file)
Anyone give me any advice at all pls cos all these posts are confusing me lol 😊

Whether the file you want to send will work on the other phone depends entirely on what type of file it is and if the other phone has software to handle it. You should just be able to send using any available option (bluetooth, ir, sms, mms, email to phone, etc). If you send email to the phone it also depends on the carriers email system (unless the other person is using a third party isp for their email). What are you trying to send to what phone model and is that phone physically near you or somewhere else so you have to send over the air?
Email! thanks for that.. 😊 i dint think of it, see obviously my ngage has bluetooth but my NEC doesnt so it has to be over the air. Oh and the NEC can take java so i know that wont be a problem... i should be able to send a .JAR file via email attatchment (i hope 😊 )
Thanks a lot
i have 6600 with v4.09.1 firmware..my problem is cant set the connection security for gprs like other nokia phone..plz help me..tq
