6600 Email Setup

35 replies · 23,993 views · Started 07 June 2004

Hi, ive done a few searches through the forums:

"6600 Email setup"
"6600 Email"
"Email"
"Trouble Email"

Cant seem to find anything specific to 6600. Just wanting to know if people can get their email to work on 6600. Im from australia and have various access points set up for mms , gprs and can use opera and agile messenger. However none of these seems to be able to get the email to work. I have both incoming and outgoing settings set up for it as well as the correct username and password and everything. I used to get a time out message but now i am receiving the following message:

"Internet: Server not Found"

Has anyone else had a similar problem setting up their email and if so how did you fix it??

Ive spoken to customer service of both my Service provider for internet and mobile phone, and also called nokia customer care. The guy from nokia just advised me to get the latest firmware but im not sure that this will fix the problem. What do you guys think?? Does the mail box name matter?

Please note that going onto gprs and using optus mobile mail (an external site where you can set up your email) works fine for me, but i want to be able to receive email directly into the mailbox of the phone.

Help!?

It doesn't matter for me, I've changed it a few times to test and it still works. I'm sure you checked your isp's settings for mail and you have their incoming right so if you've tried everything and this is important, then it's work going to 4.09.1 because it does have better mail capabilities. You couild also make sure that you have set security and tls off. I sounds like your dns isn't working though...

How do you change the dns server setting on the phone because thats the only setting i cant find

sjbu wrote:How do you change the dns server setting on the phone because thats the only setting i cant find

when you are in an access point from phone>menu>tools>settings>connections>access points you punch the left navikey and select advanced. It brings up primary and secondary name servers etc..

I got the dns setting from my isps web site, and what do you know it works. You are a legend, thank you so much, i owe you one!!!! 😊 😊

Sweet! Let me know if everything else still works. I may have to try for a speed boost here.

I can receive all my emails now but i cant send any, it displays message sending failed, only problem is i have the outgoing emails set up properly so i dont know why its doing it.

Sigh, well one problem at a time eh? 😃

I don't know if your isp requires authentication or dedicated outgoing servers to let you send messages. It seems to vary (even from what the isp says). Try using your mobile phone's default outgoing servers and see if that works. Also you can mess w/ the password. It's a little difficult since you have the older firmware so I don't know what features you can have. Did you turn the security settings off?

yeh security settings are all turned off. Im just trying turning them on now see how that goes, fingers crossed it makes a difference, ill keep playing around with it, eventually ill probably have to update firmware anyway and then ill have to go through all this again lol!

Oh well thanks for trying

You could try some kind of mail forwarding system for your inbox and get an outbox you know works. Also it might be worth seeing if you can create another mailbox and specify for receiving / sending. Unfortunately I don't know what your firmware does. I'm not even sure upgrading would fix it. If you're having to manually plug the DNS for mail, but your other GPRS connections get the square box around them (IP assigned etc) and you can browse w/ wap then it sounds like something to do w/ your providers system. Can you register your email account on your mobile providers site?

Damn i had this long elaborate reply written and then when i clicked submit the site went down. Oh well

Basically your more intelligent than any of the tech support people ive spoken to from both my isp and mobile provider. Ill try to ring the isp and see what they say but theyll probably just tell me to ring mobile provider and the mobile provider will tell me to ring my isp.

Firmware update might do the trick i read something about improved services for sending email over pop3, which is what im using.

Just have to wait and see. Thanks for your help

Yeah I did a big post and it killed it too...oh well guess I gotta remember to always copy before submitting. lol @ me being more intelligent than tech support 😉 I think a lot of the nok and provider guys aren't industrious enough..and I've spent enough time talking to nok complaints to know.

Anyways..

Idea: plug in your mailservers as numberic IP addresses instead of the names. You may need to then revert the dns to auto or not, but it seems like that's one part of the problem. it's worth a shot.

so you think i should make 2 access points, one with the name for incoming mail and one with the name for outgoing???, sorry im a bit thick today 😎

Dont worry tech support people just rely to heavily on their computer in front of them. They dont spend enough time actually researching the different phones. :icon13:

yeah you should read my last post in the messenger section about our techs. I'd try plugging in the IP addresses of the mail servers first.

So let's say you have

mail.mytmobile.com and you had to replace that with mail.earthlink.net and you got some result.

Then what you want to do is plug in the ip address of mail.earthlink.net

here's a handy link : http://www.hcidata.co.uk/host2ip.htm

so instead of mail.earthlink.net, you would plug in 207.217.121.215 it's worth a shot.

Otherwise it's back to the drawing board.

What's can and can't you do now?

Ok what i can do atm is check and receive emails, i can type an email to send but i press send it waits a while and says message sending failed, check network settings. Or something like that. Im just leaving it for now, busy working so dont have much time to experiment

When you get back to it, who is your ISP for your email?

My ISP is spin internet services. They're an australian broadband ISP

I keep seeing that add for the psiloc program for the 9200 says something like having trouble sending email, get psiloc smtp auth do you think that would work for 6600 as well??

Ok i was reading around on the net yesterday, and i found a site that said its not possible to send emails from an isp's smtp server unless you are connected to their service. Therefore my problem might be that the smtp authorisation fails because i am trying to connect to the server from another source. It said that if you want to be able to send email you would have to use the smtp server of the mobile service provider.

Unfortunately i tried that and it didnt work. I also rang my mobile provider and they told me that there is a problem sending email from 6600 at this stage and they have engineers working on it to rectify the problem. I dont know if he was just lying or not.

Ill work this out eventually i have with all the other problems it just takes time.

Edit: here is the link to the site i got that info from what do you make of it??

I think the ISP thing is why TMO-USA makes you register your account online before you try to use the phone. It's probably doing a proxy so it needs to send to the account after that and that's where the trouble lies. If you've got the latest firmware (possibly earlier), you should be able to get around this by using the secureauth smtp servers for your isp as your outgoing mailserver (provided your mobile network isn't somehow interfering). The problem isn't with your phone (although the setup isn't the best). I'd definately see if your ISP supports secure smtp authentication and then try setting those in. It's luck of the draw. Some ISP's support unauthenticated sending (you could telnet to sendmail on machines and email people messages from themselves just to freak them out), but this is becoming less common. You MAY have a workaround if you can find some free email service online that lets you add pop3 boxes to check. I haven't searched around since my email is finally working. Gonna look at your isp stuff if I can now.

Idea:

When I look at my connections for email I don't see a port setting (4.09.1) the ports I can set are in the advanced configurations for the access points. You could try this

(I just used melbourne as an example)

Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) smtp.mel.spin.net.au PORT (optional): 25
Incoming Mail Server (POP3) pop3.mel.spin.net.au PORT : 110

There's probably a reason you have optional port support for SMTP. IIRC 25 is default anyways, but you could try plugging it in to your phone as:

smtp.mel.spin.net.au:25

I think Phone providers have problems limiting people to their default WAP deck, but also letting them use the email features of their phone. It might be worth a technical call and asking them to let you get whatever the higher GPRS access plan is for free or something to test the email setting (beg borrow plea whatever). How are they charging you for GPRS now?

its just a flat rate chardged per kilo byte of download. Theres no monthly access fee im not sure if i can upgrade to a higher gprs plan as such. I tried changing the address and put that port on the end but i get a cannot connect to internet server message when i try to send a message. Ill play around with it a bit

still not working, i think i might just bite the bullet and update the firmware, the only reason im apprehensive about it is that i dont want to lose all my programs and stuff i have installed on the phone, does a PC Suite Backup , Backup all the programs, or just contacts calender entries etc.???

??

i've had the same problem trying to download e-mails from orange.net on an o2uk 6600

i had to mix up the settings to get it to work.

try getting the settings for your isp & your network. you should find them at http://www.nokia-asia.com/nokia/0,,46734,00.html

use all the networks settings but change your pop3 server to the isp & change your username & password.

hope it works for you

hehe thanks for the help but weve tried pretty much everything already, including that. I can receive emails no problem just sending the problem thats why im gonna go the firmware upgrade, just apprehensive about losing all my apps and stuff

For sending to work you must use your phone network operator's SMTP server. Not your ISP's server.

i tried that but that doesnt work either, i think the 3.42 firmware just has inherent issues with sending email. I thought i was so smart when i figured out you have to use phone providers smtp server but then "Message sending failed" 😃

I live in USA. Called Nokia.
They told me that T-Mobile service uses GPRS and this phone used EDGE.
Funny, i can receive emails and not send.

let me know if u find any other option ?

thanks

Please note that going onto gprs and using optus mobile mail (an external site where you can set up your email) works fine for me, but i want to be able to receive email directly into the mailbox of the phone.

Help!?

i found an app on the viking games website (the guys that made the mp3 player with bluetooth support) and they had an email sending program which supposedly allowed you to access smtp servers from external sources. Unfortuneately i tried it and although it doesnt now display message sending failed, it just gets stuck on sending email for about 3 minutes and then goes back to the email screen. I was really hoping this one would work. Oh well

I have *exactly* the same problem.. same phone, same firmware. I am trying to send through Telstra SMTP server.

I'd *love* to know the solution. If it's only a firmware upgrade.. I'm there!

same problem here. i'm from the philippines, using smartgprs and gawab.com mail servers.
