Which Ngage should I get?

70 replies · 32,063 views · Started 13 July 2004

Hi

Understand that the N-gage QD plays on mono playback. Does this mean that the sound/music from the games and real-player are in mono too?

I tottaly agree with Raven! It's been 3 mounths i bought N Gage, and the phone still rocks.I live in Latvia, but before i bought my N Gage i was in Germany and had the opportunity to see N Gage QD in action,so I already knew what is it like. But the choice was clear - N Gage younger brother QD is a cut out crap, and when i came back, the first thing i did was buying my N Gage!( back in July)I don't give
a sh--t to all the side talking or MMC swaping, because it never seemed a real problem to me.And like Raven said,N Gage is much cheaper because of his age in the market, although it is more powerfull than QD,and you all can see how the poor people with QD are searching MMC writters or bluetooth compatible PCs,playing only expensive N Gage games.I don't want to start messing up with illegal games and software thing, but i do know a few ways how to get these games and apps, it only depends what do you want.In fact, my N Gage is fully tunned(except only cover - in Latvia the phone isn't very popular)with 256 MMC-films,Java games, apps and other that sort of cool things.I can't even guess what would it be like, if i hadn't USB connection...
In the end i would only like to add that i never had those problems mentioned above(thank god!),actually,i think those people, whose phones broke, aren't guite carefull or just careless with their phone. To sum up,QD is for those gamer type people, while the N Gage is more functional device and the cheapest Symbian OS smartphone so far,for those people, who don't mind the size and talking problems, but likes different design and all those fuetures modern phone can give!
Great forum, lots of information about N Gage and easy posting system(no need to register to leave a message). Thanks!
P.S Don't mind please if i have any mistakes in my text!!!

can i use nokia headphones or normal headphones

where can i download a free mp3 player for a QD

There is no free MP3 player. You can try the eBook reader - READM,it has the ability to play MP3 files.Search the forum

I'd get the qd. All Nokia phones have great sound and reception so I didn't make my decision based on that. Rather the original Ngage looked stupid when making/taking a call and required a degree in medicine to change the games. Thus it failed miserably at it's designated purpose being a GAMEPHONE. If I look stupid using the phone and can't change games easily then the gamephone recieves an F grade. The QD fixes that and manages to get a B grade (will get an A when better games come out) as a reult. All the other features the original had over the QD are frivolous as they don't add anything to the main function of the machine.

Captain O........have u played " Asphalt Urban GT or Ghost Recon "? Dont u think the QD deserved the "A" grade for that?

BTW.....I got the QD and i am a very happy camper....

Cant wait to get Requiem of Hell or Call of Duty.........those 2 should give the QD an "A+". 😃 😃

QD nice and portable, great games, only thing i have a prob with is not having a MP3 but...what kind of phone has a MP3 player anyways? Kinda stupid if you ask me, imagine listening to music on that thing. Either way QD rulez.

PS Ghostdog there are a couple free Mp3 players...i could put up a link...but im not sure if its allowed.

I believe you are talking about warez so still no,there aren't any free MP3 players. If there are any freeware(legal) MP3 players feel free to post them.

Yes its legal...I 4 get where i got it from but ill put it up but I believe 1 is the Symbian Oggplayer as quoted :V1.5.1: (released 07/17/04)

This release will work for Nokia 6600, Nokia 6620, Nokia 7610, and probably future Series 60 phones that support the MMF architecture.
This version plays mp3 and aac files in addition to the ogg file format. Please read the ReadMeFirst.html file contained in this release for more information which formats are supported by your phone.

The symbian MMF ogg example "OvController" conflicts with this software. If you have it insatlled please remove it prior to installing this software.

Also there is one called "MP3player" that is located on a MSN Group of course you have to have a MSN ID in order to download from here. removed

Hello everyone. I would like to start apologizing for my bad english, but i will try to explain my problem the best i can...

The fact is that my father has bought me the QD for christmas, i do have a mp3 player (a 20 GB jukebox XDDDD more exactly) and i never hear the radio, so in this case should i keep the QD or not?

Im very confused, because i dont know what is triband, could you explain?

A lot of thanks...

Mobile phone networks based on the GSM ("Global System for Mobile communications" originally "Groupe Spcial Mobile"😉 technology, can use several different radio frequency ranges or frequency "bands".

In North America the frequency ranges of 850MHz and 1900MHz are used.

Elsewhere in the world the frequency ranges of 900MHz and 1800MHz are used.

Network operators (carriers) can build their network to support one or both allowed frequencies (depending on where in the world they are, what kind of licenses they have, and what they decide to invest in). In general (and to put it simply), the higher frequencies (1800/1900) are only used in densely populated areas (cities).

The N-Gage QD comes in two variants: One for North America (with support for 850MHz, 1900MHz and 1800MHz), and another for the rest of the world (with support for 900MHz, 1800MHz and 1900MHz).

Since they support three different frequency ranges, they're called "triband" (three frequency bands) phones.

A "quad-band" phone would support all four frequency ranges. There are also quad-band phones which support three GSM frequencies and then one so called 3G (3rd Generation network) frequency such as the 2100MHz for WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access; also known as UMTS or "Universal Mobile Telecommunications System"😉.

In any case, the QD is not an MP3 player, but it can be used for making phone calls, messaging (text messages, multimedia messages, email), keeping track of appointments, contacts, etc. + you can buy and play games. You can also get and run a bunch of other types of applications on the phone. You make up your own mind whether all that is useful or not, but remember that none of those things are possible on your MP3 player, I suppose. 😉

Sorry like i said before my english is awfull and so i didnt ask what i wanted. My question is: should i keep the n-gage QD (considering that i have a mp3 player and i dont usually hear to radio) or should i get the traditionall one?

In any case a lot of thanks to that anonymous reader.

I bought the QD at took it back within 2 days! I don't like the arkward rubber flaps that protect the sockets, the horrible power button underneath the rubber skin.

The ugly graphic interface, the menus are modern yet dull. apart from the radio and Mp3 I found the screen very dark as if contrast was too high (which didn't change much in display settings) photos and pics were terrible compared to original ngage and 7650.

Well it's gone now and have had to resort to buying original from ebay!

Wow - I couldn't disagree more. I find the QD to be a fantastic little device.

1) Size - it's smaller than the original which is always important when carrying something with you all day.

2) Built better - the build quality on the QD is much "tighter" than the original, which felt like a cheap piece of plastic when squeezed. The rubber grips around the sides are there so you get a good grip around the device, and provides protection in case of a fall. The power button under the rubber is pretty clever, and those rubber flaps over the ports are a necessity in keeping those important ports clean and dust free.

3) Brighter screen - perhaps you have a bad unit? My QD screen is VERY bright, much more so than the original screen.

4) MMC slot - you should never have to take the battery out of a device to change a game. That's stupid. They corrected this with the QD.

They fixed all of the shortcommings of the original. Radio sucks, and you can find plenty of apps to play mp3s. But the fact is, this was never an mp3 player or a radio, hence the move to the cheaper mono (to keep the price down). Don't forget this debuted at $100 cheaper than the original. There are plently of MP3 players and movie players out there you can download if you need them, but this is a gaming phone. and it's with that focus where they hit a homer with the new model. The new gen of games are getting better, some are fantastic, like Pathway to Glory, Colin 2005, Asphalt, Worms, FIFA. Some of the older games hold up great too, like Tony Hawk, Tiger woods, the SIMS.... all great games.

Add to that that this is a terrific phone - great speakerphone, great reception....

I really have nothing bad to say about it. NOKIA did a great job on this device, and I hope it does well enough to warrant a sequel.

i own n-gage classic and it rocks!!!although it has only 4096 colour screen but it just the same as QD rite?the only drawback for n-gage is short battery life and no mp3 ringtones 4 message alert..and oh yeah, why do everytime i want to change meme\ory card i have to set the time...this is annoying

what about that, when i used Ngage it had in the music player thing called Extra bass or something like that but if i install mp3 player on Ngage qd will it have extra bass or bass at all.

This definetely depends on what you want!
To think this should be a gamephone, why in the blue hell do we need a mp3-player and a radio? And in a good gaming device it should be easy to change the game so again classic gets a kick under the belt. Then the battery: it has come to my attention that you can play 15h with GBA SP or something like that. With N-Gage classic? Nah fuck you, you're only playing two hours mister (without charging the battery)! QD isn't getting to 15h, never, but it's much closer!

If you really want a good mp3 phone (not sure if the classic is one?) then turn to the classic. Nokia really should rename the original N-Gage to multimedia station or something like that 😃.

I consider QD much better for gaming. It isn't that good phone since S60 is pretty slow and it's kinda big (although this means you have a good grip, guaran-damn-teed!), but definetely better than the original (sidetalking, prrfft. Gj Nokia!).

Then there's few nice things I like to add (QD):
- Good grip due to the nice rubber buffers.
- Hot swap becomes really important when you use a MMC- reader, trust me with this one!
- The sepearate action/ok- button is nice. I hate when it's in the navpad.
- Navpad seems to be nice. It does have rised sides like the original.
- Feels nice in my hands. If you have really big hands, buy a Xbox 😊.
- The new menu is nice imho, someone said it sucks, well it's his opinion.

And to protect the whole N-Gage:
- Yes there are few nice games: Pathway to glory (just way too good!), Ghost Recon (nice), The Sims (good game imo), VirtuaTennis (nice even it is _tennis_) and Ashen (haven't played too much, but seems alright).
- I don't get it, what's so bad in N-Gage? Yeah it lacks good games, but isn't the price alright? GBA SP 99 euros and a decent phone another 99 euros. N-Gage QD: about 200 euros here. GBA SP + a phone kinda wins this, BUT (!) you just can't get a good S60 phone with only 99 euros if you happen to want all those nice programs and stuff 😊.

The bottom line?
- QD for gaming and calling.
- Classic for mp3's, radio and sidetalking (prrffft)

Btw. your backtalking isn't really that good solution... what if your phone breaks down? Refund? Haha, you have drilled your phone, don't even think 😃.

Thanks Marty.
Yeah I really don't have anything bad to say about QD. Now I only have to get a new MMC since this A-Data Myflash blah blah blah is fucked up for some reason (shitty brand?).

No I'm not from UK. I think Sandisk would be good, but I don't know because I can't find the compabilitylist anymore. Is Kingston 128mb MMC any good?

I'v been using the n-gage for some time, and i'v never bothered to use the "safge disconect" and i'v havent had any problems with that.

Some cards can handle the sudden disconnect. The usb isn't such a bad idea, I wish QD had one. Although a MMC- reader is good enough and hot swap makes the whole thing easy to use.

I'v got that card and no problems at all 😊

Agreed!!! Psy & Marty!

I'm a proud owner of both N-Gage platforms too. But I've sold my N-Gage classic and retained my QD. To everyone out there, you really have to ask yourself what is your basic needs over buying a certain fone, before actually buying it! And don't just listen to those topics/replies which are actually biased, saying this one rules, and the other one s--ks!!! As I've said and a lot of here who posted that these 2 fones both have their strengths and weaknesses. It just depends on "YOU" the soon-to-be-owner of that fone which really suits your needs.

(For the Classic N-GAGE)
It's really a great all-in-one fone, that's a hands down(xcept for the sidetalkin and USB port/MMC issues). You can have at your fingertips a fone with an MP3 player/Radio in stereo quality, USB port for easier transfering of files(making ur fone a portable storage device too(must have a bigger MMC of course!), capable of playing all the standard ngage game packages and also the QD game packages.

(For the N-GAGE QD)
It's a gaming fone(that's the reason they drop the MP3/radio)!!! The sleek and compact design is the great plus in here together with the Hot-swappable MMC card. For the dropped MP3 player a third-party apps that can play MP3 can be loaded into this fone, just get one (legally of course!) and install it, and Voila!!! For the quality of MP3, it really can't match the stereo sound of the classic one, but, depending on how you've converted your MP3, you can really make it sound good by tweaking the mp3file using certain apps/mp3editors in the market. Mine sounds good, after playing/tweaking it(adding reverb) i've made/get it closer to the stereo quality everyone is raving about 😉 . This is the reason why i've just sold my n-gage classic, since I have in my hands a sleek/compact gaming fone that can match the mp3 player of the classic(i don't need radio anyway). 😃

I just recently purchased a QD after having the original (OG) for about a year. At first, I was put off by the smaller size since I'm used to playing console games that have larger controllers. I had no problems with the OG except for the fact that it was huge; while the QD is only marginally smaller, it's so much more comfortable to carry in your pocket. I also like the more rigid feel of the QD's buttons as opposed to the mushier feel of the OG's buttons; I especially like the feel of the D-pad on the QD. I will keep my OG for backup purposes and it's tri-band ability.

i guess u r not right guys who tries to sepparate this two models. Nokia has made a stupid movement when it relises QD. Here's the question : Why nokia was unable to make good mp3 player and gaming platform in one model?
Stupid , stupid. And there is another stupid movement - why they stoped releasing classic n-gage? I HOPE that nokia wont be those stupid PR planing movements again, and if they will, they'll suck.

P.S. MY KINGDOM FOR CLASSIC N_GAGE!!!

hello everybody, i am a newbee here..
just want to ask ....
let say if i use headphone n use realone of ngage classic to open video clip ,will the sound be stereo ?
