i must say that when i was trying to decide on if i should buy an n-gage or not, this entire thread was nearly completely useless to me. the pathetic bickering over which n-gage is better almost turned away from the phone completely.
i did however find the first few posts very helpful as they explained the basic outline of what each of the phones have to offer. at first i was pretty keen on the mp3 player feature of the classic, so i had my mind made up, however, i already have an mp3 player which would go to waste if i bought the classic, so i was undecided once more. i thought the comments of 'why would you want mp3' were quite amusing, as anyone could ask you 'why do you want a phone in a hand held game console?'
the sidetalking wasnt an issue for me as i could mod the phone. the comments made along the lines of 'you wont have warranty anymore if you mod the phone' were completely irrelevant as well as i could only find 2nd hand n-gage classic's and as such, they were already out of warranty.
the problem with the changing of the mmc card was also not a problem as you can mod your n-gage classic to be able to hot swap mmc cards.
so i went around to a few shops, played around with the qd's on display in some shops, and then wandered around to some 2nd hand stores to have a look at the classic's.. the classic looked really ordinary (no offence to the classic owners - it just isnt my thing) i remembered that i had once before played with an n-gage which was on display in a store and i was really unimpressed, however when i recently played around with them they really did get me interested.. the difference? the first time a few years back i tested out a classic, this time around, the qd.
i made the decision on the qd for a few reasons
- battery life - i recently got stuck with a flat mobile when my gearbox failed on my car. not something i want to happen again
- it simply looks like it is built better
- it is more comfortable in my hands
- i dont have to mod the case for 'back talking' - even though the warranty thing wasnt an issue for me, i didnt want to risk ruining my new phone
- i didnt have to spend money on a hot swap mmc mod
- my mp3 player still gets a lot of use 😊 - its a 3rd of the size of the n-gage too, so there are no issues carrying it
the n-gage qd isnt nokia taking a backward step, i see it as they are realising that they cant have a slice of every pie. the mp3 player market is huge, many people already have mp3 players, very good ones at that, so the mp3 feature to most people is useless.
