Which Ngage should I get?

70 replies · 32,063 views · Started 13 July 2004

i must say that when i was trying to decide on if i should buy an n-gage or not, this entire thread was nearly completely useless to me. the pathetic bickering over which n-gage is better almost turned away from the phone completely.

i did however find the first few posts very helpful as they explained the basic outline of what each of the phones have to offer. at first i was pretty keen on the mp3 player feature of the classic, so i had my mind made up, however, i already have an mp3 player which would go to waste if i bought the classic, so i was undecided once more. i thought the comments of 'why would you want mp3' were quite amusing, as anyone could ask you 'why do you want a phone in a hand held game console?'

the sidetalking wasnt an issue for me as i could mod the phone. the comments made along the lines of 'you wont have warranty anymore if you mod the phone' were completely irrelevant as well as i could only find 2nd hand n-gage classic's and as such, they were already out of warranty.

the problem with the changing of the mmc card was also not a problem as you can mod your n-gage classic to be able to hot swap mmc cards.

so i went around to a few shops, played around with the qd's on display in some shops, and then wandered around to some 2nd hand stores to have a look at the classic's.. the classic looked really ordinary (no offence to the classic owners - it just isnt my thing) i remembered that i had once before played with an n-gage which was on display in a store and i was really unimpressed, however when i recently played around with them they really did get me interested.. the difference? the first time a few years back i tested out a classic, this time around, the qd.

i made the decision on the qd for a few reasons

- battery life - i recently got stuck with a flat mobile when my gearbox failed on my car. not something i want to happen again
- it simply looks like it is built better
- it is more comfortable in my hands
- i dont have to mod the case for 'back talking' - even though the warranty thing wasnt an issue for me, i didnt want to risk ruining my new phone
- i didnt have to spend money on a hot swap mmc mod
- my mp3 player still gets a lot of use 😊 - its a 3rd of the size of the n-gage too, so there are no issues carrying it

the n-gage qd isnt nokia taking a backward step, i see it as they are realising that they cant have a slice of every pie. the mp3 player market is huge, many people already have mp3 players, very good ones at that, so the mp3 feature to most people is useless.

WHERE CAN I GET THE MOVIES THATS ALREADY ON mmc FOR MY NGAGE SO THAT I CAN WATCH MOVIES? PLEASE E-MAIL ME AT [email protected]

i know i can do it myself, however im kinda lazy! thanks a mil! and will someone PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

I chose the original because I don't like the fact that I have to carry another mp3 player. I just wanna have something that All In One ... I can't afford a PDA or sth like that ... so this Ngage OG is the best for me.

The reason why Nokia don't make a perfect machine ( for ex, a QD w/ mp3 ) because they don't want everyone to just use one machine. They want this model has half of this, the other one has half of that ... so that they can make people feel greedy ... I bet you if nokia made a QD w/ stereo mp3, then all the ones who use it would NEVER change their fone ... lol ... and this is not what business wants ...

So in my opinion, if :
+ You want a machine that can play games, mp3 ==> Ngage Original. ( the flaw in design can be avoided by buying a bigger MMC, and use a headset if you don't wanna talk in the side )
+ You want a stylish machine that can play games, mp3 is not a bid deal ==> Ngage QD.

Note: I have never owned any Ngage ( my first ever ngage will come in the next few days ). Those exp. I had from trying ( for a few days ) my friends' ngages, and ofcourse, reading tons of reviews online. So if I make any mistakes, feel free to fix me ...

i used n-gage (not qd). because when i wanna to but this hp. i compare with both. i dont select qd because it have so much increse."no mp3 (must download software to play), no radio, used WAV sound to ringing tone (n-gage use mp3 and wav), dark display, no realone player (must download software), no screen shot, and so many
if you want free sortware...i suggest you share with your friends if your friends have. you can spend your money. get N-GAGE NOT QD!

qd is much better:

first, the mp3 of the original n-gage conflicts with the gaming sofware, so if you use them simultaneously (e.g. while gaming some one call u and ur using a mp3 for ur ringing tone) eventually it will corruptyour n-gage software.

suggestion: on the market, the original n-gage costs more about $100 differential to the qd. it might be wiser if you buy a seperate mp3 player that cost $90 and above. imagine, you dont have to buy a seperate mmc for mp3.

secondly, the usb of the n-gage can damage your mmc. like what happened to me.
thats why they remove the usb interface from the qd

lastly, i hate the akward manner u answer or make a call. and the n-gage 1 has a smooth surface which makes it prone to slip. not like the qd that has a rubber for a good grip of the phone. 😎

You are misinformed my friend. The QD has a MUCH brighter display, and is even advertised for this directly from Nokia. You will end up downloading things for the phone (I would assume?) anyway, so what is the big deal about downloading realplayer, an mp3 player..etc? Also, it IS possible to use MP3's as ringtones on the QD as well.

The downside(s) would be mono sound as opposed to stereo (on the original), no radio, and no cable hookup to the PC (QD needs BT or a card reader). BUT, the upsides (at least for me) outweigh the downsides by a mile. Brighter screen, v2.0 software (N-Gage original is v1.0), built stronger, better battery life, don't have to dismantle the unit to change MMC cards, slightly smaller (although it SEEMS much smaller), dont have to hold it all freaky to make a call (aka: sidetalkin'😉, and it's $99 now with a Nokia 1 Year Warranty. Just can't beat that.

I have both. I would use the original N-Gage over the QD anytime because :-

Its Triband so it works in the USA and europe
MMC drive just shows up in Windows
Stereo is better than mono
Better design, more solid feel
Cleaner Series 60 theme - QD looks too fuzzy

Hello Mr. GhostDog,

Plss...! need your help. I got the original one but its sound both in FM radio and media player is not stereo (I thought) and just the same with my friend's QD. What can I gonna 2 do?

I found this thread very helpful in choosing my new n-gage. I decided to get the qd because i can live without the mp3 and fm player. Got mine for $100 new with no contract and unlocked it. Waiting for my 1gig mmc and reader/writer to arrive. I love this phone, best phone i ever had. Battery lasts long. Thanks guys.

hey can you send me the apps or even pls explain me about this mp3 tweaking for qd pls pls my email is faiqnazirathotmail.com pls it would be very great pls
