Memory expansion idea (oh yes, another one!)

37 replies · 6,019 views · Started 16 October 2002

Anyone who has used a Palm handheld like the V or m5xx series is probably aware of 2 utilities that can be used to give you extra storage space....

JackFlash: Can format unused flash RAM so you can use it for storage
JackSprat: Can remove all the data relating to alternative language support from the flash, so you can have more free flash for Jackflash to use.

My thought..... could something similar be created for the 7650?

What do you think?

Cheers

Do u know the one that made those apps?

Maybe we can email them to do a similar one for the 7650!

GOod thinking mate, if we can get the person who made this, and bring the 7650 to his attention we could be onto something here 😊 😊

Reply received.....

Time will tell....

Thanks for your input David.

Currently the 7650 is not available in North America, so we have not had a chance to look at one. I am not sure what would be possible at this point.

Brad.

The only people who I could see having the expertise to do the job, and do it properly are Ximplify. Who wants to email them about the idea? You'd need to have a bit of knowledge about this previous product though if we're going to suggest it as a reference point.

Good idea..... I can let them know the ins and outs of the products from an operational point of view.

Any particular contact there, or just hit the general email account?

Mr G

Not available in North America? Unbelievable,man.... 😮

Hello,

I'm hoping this email finds its way to your developers, for possible comment....

It is common fact that the Nokia 7650 phone is popular, however one major bugbear is the small memory capacity. You only have to frequent the popular forums to realise how annoying the lack of memory expansion is, and the small internal memory. MMC expansion seems to be out of the window, so software tricks may be the way to go.

You guys are are considered the best in the business with regards to 7650 development, and the popularity of SeleQ proves that, hence why I approach you on behalf of the 7650 community with an idea for a software product.

Bear in mind that I do not know whether what I suggest is technically possible, however, if anyone can tell, then I guess you can.

In the PalmOS world, where memory is limitied, a company called Brayder Technology (www.brayder.com) produced 2 products to get around memory limitations:

JackFlash: A product which can format unused FlashROM space, and make it available to the user as additional storage space. Using JackFlash, a user can shift applications and data into this additional storage space and access that data in exactly the same way as other data albiet Read-Only

JackSprat: With the advent of Palm Mxx based devices, the amount of space in the FlashROM used by the OS increased due to what was called an EFIGS ROM. This ROM held multiple language files (English, French, Itanlian. German and Spanish). These languages took up much more FlashROM space, and reduced the space free for JackFlash to use. JackSprat was able to remove the additional unused language files from the FlashROM and therefore increase the space available to JackFlash, and therefore increase the storage the user had to play with.

In most instances, using a combination of JackSprat and JackFlash would provide Mxxx users with an additional 2MB of useable storage located in the FlashROM

I have petitioned the 7650 community on the AllAboutEr6 forum (http://www.allabouter6.com), and I have a large backing with which to approach you.

The question is, could you produce a similar set of utilities for the 7650.

I believe this, if possible, would be a killer application that many, many users would pay to have.

I hope this mail does not fall down a black hole, and you will at least consider and evaluate the possiblility of such products for the 7650 platform...... there are lots of people who will have their fingers crossed and waiting with baited breath for your response.

If I can help in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me

Regards

OK, lets see what they say 😊

Nicely worded email, and if anyone from Ximplify is reading this post now, I would definitely pay for any app. that expanded the 7650 memory capability. (quite sure that at least 70% of users would) 😊

i think its not only 71% but a 101%. almost all of the 7650 user want a expansion slot or a larger memory capacity. i wish i could invent one. 😃

Here is a response I received from Ximplify this morning:

Dear Stuart,

Thank you for your email and kind remarks.

With regards to your (and 7650's community's) request, we have been working on a number of things to address some of the limitations inherent in the 7650 but this wasn't one of them - we now ADDed it to our list and is infact on the TOP of our priority list. Unfortunately, we cannot promise you a product/s just yet. Please allow us some time to investigate the technical feasibility of implementing your request. Hopefully we won't kill anymore 7650s on the way there (done this a few too many times - luckily Nokia Malaysia has been very supportive). Once we have done this, only then will we be in a position to make any promises. We will keep you inform on the outcome of our investigation regardless of findings.

Once again, thank you for your support & your offer of assistance. Your feedback and comments are greatly appreciated by all at Ximplify. We will be releasing a new version of SeleQ incorporating some of the requests posted on the allabouter6 forums so keep a look out for it.

Warm Regards
Patrick Anthony

So, looks promising don't you think?

Mr G

Definately! And for some ppl who whink that Nokia is all bad! Did you read the cooments about NOKIA Malaysia? This goes out to everyone that does not believe in Nokia 😃 😃 😃

😃 Wonderful email! I'll surely be one of the first to buy that app when or if it comes!!!!

If it's that easy to get Ximplify's attention, they deserve all the encouragement and support we can give them! I'll be another on the list for the "memory stretcher" product!

You have my support man!! Great job great email to them!! And Rejoce for they have reply with positive response!

Allabouter6.com is a great webportal where many pple from around the world come here to share information and knowledge.. some great companies too pop in here for feedback.

Thanks to the Great Rafe and the rest of the web team 😃

If Ximplify do manage to make this product i'm going to kiss them 😉

I'm not sure how much difference it could make memory wise, but anything is better than nothing.

Great idea!

Sorry I haven't put any feedback in before now, I saw the title and couldn't be bothered reading another thread of moaning about lack of memory. 😃

Izzo.

is more siple to Nokia make a new firmware (for "expert user"😉 whitout game, calc, calendar, music composer, etc... whit only ONE language etc. and make this "gadget" in .sis file.

if we all ask to Nokia to relase this firmware (free or pay), we will have MAXIMUM memory free.

if Nokia do.

Collect sign or send mail maybe help.

Oh dear, what you describe was actually available on the Palm platform too 😮

There was an app that allowed you to remove and add certain components to/from a standard ROM image file, and then you could flash with your 'custom' ROM.

mmmm....... I suppose such a product could be created for the 7650, however it appears much harder to do DIY flash updates with this phone, due to lack of cables.

Not sure tho.........

I can aid that problem!

There are two 7650 data cablefor sale on ebay. 30 each with no software though...
