I wonder if this is possible? It should because I have seen various remote (VPN and TCP/IP) clients for Symbian Devices. This could be the perfekt remote control for listing large MP3 collections: Imagine, via the bluetooth serial connection Winamp can stream the ID3 Tags to your phone and you, just with a tip of the joystick alter the volume, skip to the next song etc, etc... no need to bring te PC to the living room. Maybe you can controll your playlists from such a client software...

A Bluetooth remote control for the PC exists for the Ericsson t68/t68i but not for Nokia! I hope someone will eventually do it!
I'd love to be able to do that!
Ah now I would buy BT if we could do that. 😊
just enter the room and there will be life (in the PC 😃 )
Here is a link that describes what I am talking about

we need something like this

only a J2ME app.
I've just finished version 1.0 of Bemused: an app which allows you to control WinAmp using your 7650 and Bluetooth. You can browse and control your music on your phone without even being in the same room as your computer. It's pretty powerful, and also customisable using skins.
It's freely available (source code as well) from http://www.compsoc.man.ac.uk/~ashley/bemused/.
I hope people find it useful; if anyone has any problems with it, don't hesitate to contact me.

The app stops working after while, but after a couple of updates this app will rock! Keep up the good work!
EDIT: It works great now, just had to reboot my box. 😊
ten stars for you mental blank... screenshots are looking awsome, now <i am going to try this fine piece of software!
markus
the app an the phone looks really great, but the server doesn't work for me. using the 3com software the serial connection on port 3 works fine, but the bemused server doesnt establish an connection:
Welcome to Bemused v1.0
Copyright Ashley Montanaro 2002
Couldn't open port 3 (error 2).
Choose a different port and press "Connect".
but anyhow... a great porting of that idea!
markus
I faced same problem.. i'm using MSI Bluetooth Trancieving key.
I tried all other ports and same still having same error msg
The same here with the same dongle!
Great job Mental Blank!!! Now if anyone makes software what gives you control to DScaler (=TV-watching-software-hauppaugewintv-...) 😉
Hmmm, okay, let's see if we can narrow it down a bit. Some general points for setting up the server:
1. The Bemused server app should not be run on any of the same COM ports as Nokia PC Suite. You should set up a separate virtual serial port for it.
2. On my PC at least (with the MSI Bluetooth key), you shouldn't actually "connect" the virtual serial port which you use for the Bemused server. Just set it up, leave it unconnected, and run the Bemused server on that port.
3. Some Windows Bluetooth stacks can need Windows to be restarted before they actually react to changes you make.
4. You should run the server app before connecting to the PC from the phone (obvious I guess...)
5. Some apps can grab low-numbered COM ports (ones below 4 or so). Try specifying a COM port with a higher number.
If anyone's still having problems, you can send me screenshots (nice small JPEGs, please!) of your settings, and I'll do what I can to help.
"1. The Bemused server app should not be run on any of the same COM ports as Nokia PC Suite. You should set up a separate virtual serial port for it."
Already did that! Mrouter and PC Suite are not running!
"2. On my PC at least (with the MSI Bluetooth key), you shouldn't actually "connect" the virtual serial port which you use for the Bemused server. Just set it up, leave it unconnected, and run the Bemused server on that port."
When I set it up the only checkbox i have checked is Start Autoamticaly. however even If I siable it it wont connect
"3. Some Windows Bluetooth stacks can need Windows to be restarted before they actually react to changes you make."
Did restart! Still nothing
"4. You should run the server app before connecting to the PC from the phone (obvious I guess...)"
Obvious 😃
"5. Some apps can grab low-numbered COM ports (ones below 4 or so). Try specifying a COM port with a higher number."
I used 9-13! Still nothing
"If anyone's still having problems, you can send me screenshots (nice small JPEGs, please!) of your settings, and I'll do what I can to help."
What setting exactly?
Right, assuming you're using the MSI Bluetooth software, your settings should be:
"General" tab: security level "Medium".
"Local Services" tab: at least one "Bluetooth Serial Port" service. This can be set to automatic startup but should not have encryption, authorization or authentication enabled.
"Client Applications" tab: make sure the COM ports in here don't conflict with the ones in the "Local Services" tab, though it shouldn't make any difference.
"Accessiblity" tab: checkbox checked, and allow all devices to connect.
In "My Bluetooth Places > My Device", the serial port you want to use for Bemused should be "Started", but not "Connected".
These settings all work for me, and some other people. If you're still having problems, I suggest running Hyperterminal and seeing if it can connect on the COM port which you want to use.
Hope this helps.
One last thing - I'm using version 1.2.2.15 of the MSI software... maybe you need to upgrade to a later version?

Is set to Medium

There are two one standart on Port 3 and another I created on port 8

They dont! 😊

Its started but not connected! 😞

I did and it seems to connect to all ports!
Hope this helps.

I am using this type of software two! I and a fresh installation of Windows XP Pro!
😞 😞
I will try to play around with it a bit! Any ideas why this is not working? Anyone lese having problems with this?
Anyone has similar errors with this application? Anyone managed to do something to make it work?
im very intrigue with the bemused software, im planning to buy a msi bluetooth because of this software... two question i want to ask... one is where the sound of the winamp plays??? on the pc or on the phone it self??? and the second thing is what if i dont have any id3 tags on my playlist and mp3, do i still browse on my playlist??? thank you
mjsee, some answers to your questions -
1. The sound plays on your PC.
2. Bemused doesn't use ID3 at all, just the filenames of the songs, so you can still browse your music.
MaleBuffy - can you send me a screenshot of your Bemused server window, and the MSI Bluetooth settings "Local Services" window, just so I can check the settings myself? Thanks.
does bemused run with winamp3 or 2 or both. i've kinda got it working in that i can see the commands in the log, i.e. Play c:\music\file.mp3, Stop etc but nothing happens to winamp. I'm using version 3 which it automatically loads at startup. Do i need to install version 2 to get it to work.
also i've got quite a few mp3s (about 15 gig) and when i let it browse my main music folder the subdirectory list was wrong - i.e. i could see bobby brown 😉 in the base directory instead of my remixes directory. i'm guessing this is a bug but was not that annoying - since i can't control winamp yet anyway 😊 my listing file was also about 133kb so i've changed my music directory to something smaller and no such problems. it would be cool to be able to set multiple directories in the server app so i wouldn't have to change it manually when i want to listen to something different (or an option for standard directory browsing on the phone)
i think your prog is excellent and i like the skinable interface. keep up the good work and could someone let me know if installing winamp2 will cure my troubles.
thanks.
Same settings, same errors. Just can't get it to connect to any ports. I wish I could. Getting this to work would make all the frustration i've endured getting my BT to run at all worthwhile.
Please oh please let someone find a fix for Bemused!
I had LOADS of problems with my MSI adaptor.
In the end, I removed everything and re-installed it following instructions TO THE LETTER and it seems to work.
I can now sync the phone using Bluetooth, still cant send files from phone to pc though -(
Bemused DOES NOT work with Winamp3
I tried, it failed. I re-installed Winamp 2.8 and it worked a charm.
I had to remove 2 nokia items from Startup to make it all work. I now have to run them manualy to sync the phone.
I had some problems with playlists though, when I created a playlist on the PC the phone wouldnt show the songnames -(
Is there a way to make the phone read the PC playlist as it takes hours scrolling round with that poxy joystick thing.
Other than that its amazing. I can now lay in bed listening to my MP3 like I would a CD or radio, and be able to skip a track with a remote controll -) that has a colour screen and track listing! yay.
Yep, Bemused doesn't work with Winamp 3 - doh! This may actually be a bug in Winamp. The fix for the problem is simple, I'll include it in version 1.1 when I release it.
Unfortunately, there isn't a simple way to make the phone read the contents of a playlist. There is a slightly more complicated way which I may add sometime soon. Being able to use multiple directories for music is also on the TODO list.
nickprice - would you mind sending me a copy of the file c:\system\apps\bemused\data\songlist.dat on your phone? I may be able to work out what's going wrong.
MaleBuffy - try running Hyperterminal on the port which you've set up in your Bluetooth settings, and then connecting to the PC using the Bemused app on your phone. You should see an "INFO" message (I think!) appear in Hyperterminal. If this happens, something really weird is going on.
Those of you who are still having problems getting Bluetooth to work, if you send me a screenshot of your Bemused server window and a dump from your registry of the keys which relate to the MSI Bluetooth dongle, I'll see if I can figure out what's going on.
Very nice application!
It works fine when I choose a directory with not so many folders and files.
When I choose a directory with like 100 folders I get the message:
"Command completed with error -20", then I cant add to playlist or play the files shown.
Can it be some special char in some of the files or folders that causes this?
Like or &?
Hm, the special chars dont seem to be the problem.
Is there a max number of files or folders that can be displayed?
i can connect but on the phone there is an error message -6310 when i do a refresh list. any idea what's wrong?
Hey I have exacly the same problem as MaleBuffy the msi adapter I installed the prog on my laptop cus i was on school but didn't work well then my desktop at home where the bleutooth never was installed before so i did it step by step and didn't install th nokia software. But the prog still doesn't connect. Couldn't open port 4 (error 2)
So i connected to com 4 with hyper terminal and did refresh list on my phone. In the hyper terminal came LIST so i guess that's working. So does anyone know what the problem is???
New version 1.1 of Bemused is now available and should help with some of your problems.
In particular, it supports longer filenames and is more forgiving with the comm port name which the user types in, which may solve the "Error 2" problems some people have been experiencing.
It also has a couple of new features: you can switch your PC off using your phone, and also select to start Bemused minimised.
One other important note: Bemused doesn't work with Winamp 3 unless you install an extra plugin. The plugin can be downloaded from http://members.telocity.com/~schweitn/wa3/wa2mgr/main.html and the new version of Bemused is available at http://www.compsoc.man.ac.uk/~ashley/bemused - enjoy!
