The Nokia 9500 firmware upgrade

In the UK, the current firmware version is 4.40(1). If you ask for it you will probably be charged, unless you have a problem with the software - then it becomes a warratny issue.

Well then again, it might have it's on version numbering too 😃

My 9300 firmware version is 4.53(0).

In a German forum (aikon.ch) someone got as well a 9300 and it is Version 4.53 (0). But what is the rumor about Version 4.70 for the 9500?

That is still a pre sales version I suppose. The ones that I have seen (at some Nokia conferences) so far had the 9500 firmware running on it. And the firmware was 4.4x

Just for your information, 2 days ago I brought my 9500 to a Nokia Service Point in Belgium for firmware upgrade. The process was announced to last 2 hours. During upgrade installation the phone crashed and now refuses to wake up. They sent it to Nokia for repair, and they just can't tell me how long this may take.

Mine was upgraded too (@ Belgium) But had no problems!

I've heard similar stories already. Basically, it's because the employees don't know what they're doing 🙄

I'll try to make some time next week to get the upgrade done as well

USA is NOT going to release the Nokia 9500, I had to buy mine from expansys, so that means no Firmware upgrades for USA.

Hey Guys! I thought the 4.51 firmware upgrade was withrawn by NOKIA due to some serious probles!? is that true??? Help me out here!

helo, i wanna ask to every one, if we change our firmware, do it also removed all software in our 9500????
thanks

Yes, the firmware upgrade is equal to a full format. So do a full backup to your MMC before upgrading your phone, that way it easy to restore your programs.

Just had my firmware upgraded to the latest version, 4.51(00). Had it done over at the Nokia Service Center at Greenbelt 1 over at Makati. Took them 3 hours to do it.

It looks to be ok so far. But the upgrade didn't fix my sync problem -- the phone would automatically try to sync everytime I connected it to my PC via the cable. Once the sync ended, it would start over and over again. I already adjusted the settings via PC Sync, to no avail. Sigh. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

can anybody tell me if the firmware upgrade is destructive or not? I.e. will it trash your phone or can you keep all you applications and data etc etc.?

Did you actually READ this thread??
A firmware upgrade will also cause a full format. So all data and apps will be gone. However, just make a full backup, so that you can restore it after the upgrade... 🙄

Okay, last news: Nokia Service Point (CarTronics, Wavre, Belgium) failed when installing firmware update on Feb. 17th. So they sent the Communicator to Nokia, saying "it will last only 24 hours, we did ask for emergency procedure". Actually, Nokia received it FIVE days later. Now Nokia says repair will last AT LEAST two weeks, probably three. Next week I fly to Africa for 4 weeks, no phone. Nothing out of 20.

Finally bought my 9500.
Got it from an independent communications place in Aberdeen, Scotland, with v4.51 firmware already installed.

Wow, you are lucky. Hopefully Communicade will have the firmware version 4.51 soon to do our phones.

got my upgrade.. hmmm but cant really pick on what d good stuff is..

Maley wrote:Come on Nokia, you guys must read these forums!

Can you please let us know when these issues are going to be resolved?(if at all).

So many things the N9210 did, that the new N9500 doesn't.. Why??

Surely you must have done some market research?

even the basic things like sending a sms to a recent received call, you cant do.. you now have to save it as a contact first. or cut n paste.

I'm not knocking the N9500 but worried that all these problems are gonna go the same way as last time, by bringing out the Nokia 9500i !!

Maley

My initial impression is the same, that whilst the 9500 is superb in some respects, there do seem to be loads of things that the 9210i did that the 9500 either does not do, or does not do as well. And there are loads of changes in the menus and screen buttons which make it much more tedious to carry out certain regular tasks.

Only after leaning on Nokia at Corp, I now find v4.51 is available in UK since 7/3/05. I am having mine flashed in Guildford tomorrow 10th. I just downloaded v 6.41.6 of PC Suite. It seems slightly better than the shipped version.

The 9500 and 9300 are no longer classed as Premium products, as the 9210(i) was, which means that all Nokia Service Centres should be able to deal with the new phones, once their staff have received the requisite training.
The v4.51 firmware is available on their computers now.

is it free to had it upgrade?

According European legislation it should also be free after the Nokia warranty.
If Nokia makes upgrades it means that they officially declare the product not to be perfect.
A warranty period is mostly given by the manuafacturer. But according EU laws the warranty should continue a reasonable part of the lifecycle. Let's say three years for a mobile phone.

If however real hardware has to be changed the vendor may calculate some "new for old" because the product becomes "newer"when it has new parts in it.

With a software upgrade this is not the case so it should be fully free.

Be aware that the VENDOR of the product is responsible. So complain at the shop where you bought it and not at Nokia's. Of course only if they refuse the free upgrade after the warranty.
