Worth it to Upgrade to firmware v5?

70 replies · 24,339 views · Started 25 March 2006

I read on Symbian-Freak about the new firmware update. Seems a lot of good things fixed or made faster. I still have version 2 and my N70 works perfectly. Would I update to the newest version?

When it works it works and I can't complain whatsoever about my N70 with v2 firmware. But the newer the better I think...

let me know!

yeah same here ver 2 for me is fine no hiccups at all.but then ni think wot if version 5 is faster & can i really be bothad to lose my phone for 6hrs or more & have 2 reinstall everything just for faster.& mite even have problems

Thats true, you have to install and input everything again. And it's not because it's newer it is better.

I hope someone with a v5 N70 will come to this thread and tell us his experiences

Can anyone here please tell me how to check my Firmware version??

Also how do i upgrade to latest firmware?? Does it work like Sony Ericsson Update Service or will i have to take it to a Service Center??

Edit - okay i found my version - 3.0546.2.3 18-11-05 RM-84

Now is it the latest or what??

Hey, it really exist a version 5 of firmware for N70? But where is version 4?

I have tha version 3.0546.2.3 18-11-05 RM-84...

Well it is not completely lost. I have it installed on my N70. It was an intermediate and internal version. v5 seems to be the latest one (and official BTW).

Not true, just fully backup your phone with nokia pc suite, and after updating it, you can just dump the backup, and just to let you know when flashing firmware you dont have to erase everything, but its better so no problems arise, i updated an n-gage yesterday without deleting the information on it.

Noticable differences with FW v5. , yes:

1. In music player, picture of album playing now shows automatically (JPG)

2. Music Player now showing song playing on desktop (like 6680), and moving
cursor down lets you adjust volume, or quickly open the player.

3. GIF animations playing better

4. TomTom and bluetooth working better. Drove for 2 hours, only lost connection
once with my Holux GPSlim 236, and it reconnected really fast (3-5 sec).
Connects faster and gets faster fix with my GPS.

5. I wonder if it's only my imagination, will test further, but, sounds like the
audio quality from the embedded music player is louder and better.

Jon

Manually, each time I start TomTom.

I have v2 on my N70. Only gripe I have is with the gallery. It is WAY slow starting up. Even with no pictures it is slow. With Symantec Security on it is even slower. To start out, opening the Gallery takes 10 or 11 seconds. WIthout the Security, it still takes 6 seconds. My friends 6682 opens the Gallery in a second or two. Does v5 work faster here? Only problem is here in the States, I have to ship my phone out to get it flashed. Ugh... I can't be withoutmy phone that long!!!

Hi. I am intrested too, if Nokia fixed the gallery problem in new firmware. Are all pictures shown when you open the Gallery, or you can browse by folders?

I am sorry no, the gallery does NOT work any faster in latest firmware v5.

This is due to how the gallery works, it scans the whole phone/memory card,
and if you have a lot of pictures on a large memory card you have a problem.

According to some people in here/Nokia, this is to make the phone user-friendly
to the less technically gifted people.

But hey, I totally agree, Nokia should fix this, at least let you choose whether
you would like the gallery to scan the whole phone/memory card, or just a
given folder. It could by default be set to scan the whole phone/memory card
for the technically less gifted, but should at least include an option to
specify a specific folder..

rest my case, go ahead and e-mail Nokia about it...

It says also something about the camera. It starts much quicker and there is something with the keylock and the slider. Is that true

So I guess there is an option now to choose to unlock the phone when sliding the back cover down(like v2 and v3) and there is an option to keep it lock when by accident the phone slides open in your pocket. Am I right?

And about the backup, I connect my N70 via bluetooth to my PC and take back up in PC Suite and after 1/4th of back up'ing it gives an error and the back up fails.

I think it is better to unlock the keypad when the cover slide down... You can take pictures very quickly...

And I understand that the new firmware correct the quality of pictures...

It is indeed faster, no discussion about that but what would be better was that there was an option to choose that the keys stay locked or the keys go unlocked when sliding open the cover.

Because I have had a few times that I felt that the cover slides open in my pocket. Or when I want to take my phone I go with my finger on the lens :-s.

Yes, indeed, an option was good....

But that option wouldn't stop your finger on the lens...

I guess the cover slide too easy.

yeah i have the problem with the back up.can someone tell me if it has been fiexed.
also have a problem when trying tyo send messages using pc suite
connecting through usb, some tell me if this ahs been fixed in newer firmware?

my friend who has an N70 aswell connects it via USB to PC and the back up'ing works good. But I connect via bluetooth to PC and the back up'ing fails. Is it maybe because of the bluetooth that times out or because of the back up file that is too big.

I think an upgrade to v5 is good but then my back up'ing should work first. Because otherwise I can put in everything again

chrisf wrote:Messus,

How do you get the album picture displayed in the Music Player?

By upgrading to the latest firmware V5 the album picture is displayed
automatically as long as the picture (jpg/gif) is stored in the album folder.

The Gallery funciont is NOT any faster with latest firmware v5 in my opinion.

Backup/Syncing with the N70 over bluetooth has never been a problem for me,
has always worked flawless. The key issue here is to configure/install bluetooth
under XP with SP2.

I upgraded my N70 to the latest v5 and since then I can not open my gallery. It freezes when opening it and I have to close it if my want my phone stable. It seens that the gallery can not scan the whole new 512 MB card.

I have installed the Resco Picture viewer for photos but for videos, which program would you use (in the gallery you are able to see pictures and video together)?

EDIT: Some additional information. If I open the gallery directly from the camera menu, it works flawlessly. In my opinion it confirms the fact that the scanning is the issue.

Talonso - copy all your files from your memory card to a PC. Then format the memory card with your phone - Menu > Tools > Memory > Options > Format mem. card

Then copy all your pix back, and see how it goes.
