Worth it to Upgrade to firmware v5?

70 replies · 24,339 views · Started 25 March 2006

I've just upgraded to v5 firmware:

V 5.0609.2.0.1
01-03-06
RM-84

There are some issues I'd like to ask if anyone else has them:

1-While opening the music player, the "Opening" dialog is displayed for like half a second. It wasn't displayed on v3 fimware.

2-In music player again, when you choose upgrade collection option, it displays the progress bar dialog with the text "A processar". I assume it means processing but in what language?

3-Music item on active standby has black colored font. Other items has white color.

4-While displaying some dialogs, the phone displays a 2 pixel white bar on the bottom of the dialog. It's been like that since v2. Even in default themes. It can be visible on firmware dialog (*#0000#). It gets worst on 3rd party themes.

Note: I've observed all these after soft-reset and without restoring any backup from an old version.

If somebody can try these and let me know if they had them, It would be very much appreciated because these things annoy me a lot...

Thanx

i do it for 20 dollars but you would also have to ship your phone to me and pay for shipping back which is about another 20 dollars canadian, so 40 canadian total, which is about 28 euros total

I was pleasantly surprised to see that my N70 now has the following FW...

V 5.0609.2.0.1 01-03-06 RM-84

I will do some TomTom testing over the Easter weekend and post some findings early next week.

Hi folks,

Slightly off thread here, but V5.xx Firmware does appear to make TomTom GPS (even more) reliable than V2 and V3 Firmwares...

1. No longer need to reboot N70 before or after using TomTom 5.20 - COOL!
2. Still recommend disabling POI's and only use "Warn only when on Route" for Speedcams
3. Recommend connecting your BT headset BEFORE launching TomTom (Intermittent problem - my Motorola HS810 may not connect automatically after TomTom has been launched)

I will do a long journey test this weekend, but all things considered it's looking really good for N70/TomTom when the Generic V5.xx firmware is installed.

Cheers,
Dez

But actually I'm still on v2 and never had to restart my n70 because of TomTom 5.2, it works good now, only one time when I almost arrived at my destination my N70 got stuck and I had to restart it.

But I do believe v5 will be better on a lot of points for our beloved N70's

steff2632 wrote:so the general feel is that its good to upgrade to v5

YES, definitly!

However, you are probably not going to get the V5 FW via your Network at the moment, so you will either have to talk nicely (beg!) to the Nokia Service Centre Technician or pay someone like FonFunShop to debrand your phone.

Dez

my phone is network free -sim free. its the only way to buy really,no network crap slowing your phone down(orange homescreen) no numerous emails to networks for unlock codes(vodafone) no missing bundled 3rd part software(t-mobile)

Thank you for the update Dez. After a frustrating weekend attempting to use TT5 on my new "3" branded N70 with v2 firmware I have just sent it off to FoneFunShop today.

No problem, you will see a major difference and its 20 well spent!

HI,,,

i have problem in 6630 that some time my mobiles restart automatic, when i calling or receiving a call, or any other kind of work its restarted.

firmware details as follow;;

V 5.03.08
17-08-05
RM-1
Nokia 6630

please advice me... when shoud i do to resolve this problem..?

steff2632 wrote:my phone is network free -sim free. its the only way to buy really

Ahh... SIM FREE... but HOW MUCH did it cost you?

On T-Mobile, the phone cost 29.99
Unbranding & FW 5 upgrade by foneFunshop cost 20
Unlock code from T-Mobile is 15.

Total Cost = 64.99 for an unbranded V5.xx phone unlocked to all networks.

If you paid a penny more than that for your Sim-Free you wasted your money, IMHO?

my phone did cost more than 65 but im not in a contract. your mloked into that contract for 18months & they will get the price back for the phone that way.& imho i odnt hink that you should ahve to pay to unlock your phone seeing ahs your locked into a contract with them

steff2632 wrote:my phone did cost more than £65 but im not in a contract. your mloked into that contract for 18months & they will get the price back for the phone that way.&

Whilst I agree I am tied to a contract, I do get bundled (FREE) XNET/ANYTIME mins, SMS, MMS and Video.
As you are not tied to a contract I assume you are on PAYG, and therefore you get no free bundles with your SIM FREE phone?
Therefore the cost of buying SIM FREE is only half of the picture... and needs analysed in a fair comparison.

2 Contract Examples:-

T-Mobile FLEXT60:
Monthly Bundle: 300 XNET/ANYTIME or 600 SMS (or any combination), plus 30 mins FREE VIDEO calls for 1st 18 months
£18.75 per month (x18) = £337.50 , plus £30 for handset, plus £15 for unlocking, plus £20 for de-branding and FW upgrade.
TOTAL COST = £402.50

O2 Online 50:
Monthly Bundle: 100 XNET/ANYTIME voice (50+50 bonus) plus 300 SMS / 75 MMS (any combination).
£18.99 (x18) = £341.82, plus £50 for handset. (Supplied unlocked and with V3.xx Firmware or higher & minimal branding).
TOTAL COST = £391.82

Now let's analyse SIM FREE... on PAYG over 18 months.

Let's assume you bought your brand new SIM-FREE N70 for around £350?
(by the way this up-front cash payment is 7-12 times the cost of a handset on a contract).

Let's also assume you only spend £10 a month on PAYG Top-Ups? (around 100 SMS or off peak-voice minutes)

Total Cost for 18 months use = £350 (handset) + 18x £10 (top-ups) = £530

As you can see you are AT LEAST £130 worse off over the 18 months period by buying SIM FREE & using PAYG.

Note: If you actually spend £20 a month on your PAYG Top-Ups the total cost increases to £710 over the 18 months... £300 WORSE OFF!

Although you have (proudly) stated in these forums over the last 6 months that an N70 SIM FREE is superior to a contract handset, you really should point out all the hidden costs you have to bear if you actually use the handset as a phone, and thus provide a FAIR COMPARISON.... 😉

steff2632 wrote:imho i odnt hink that you should ahve to pay to unlock your phone seeing ahs your locked into a contract with them

I agree, we shouldn't HAVE to pay for unlocking (and O2 at least, ship their contract handsets already unlocked).
However, where Vodafone & T-Mobile charge £15, I believe '3' apparently charge over £100 for unlock codes so I consider myself lucky paying £15.

yes your are rite in that aspect but i dont intend on keeping the phone for 18 months just till the n80 has come down in price, when i will sell gaining back most of the orignal price & moving on.wheres as in 18 months you will still be stuck on your contract.& got it for £348

steff2632 wrote:yes your are rite in that aspect but i dont intend on keeping the phone for 18 months just till the n80 has come down in price, when i will sell gaining back most of the orignal price & moving on.wheres as in 18 months you will still be stuck on your contract.& got it for £348

Selling a (USED) N70 on Ebay will make you, at most, £200. Assuming you paid £350 for it new, that's £150 you have lost already.
Presumably you also bought some PAYG top-ups over the last 6 months? That's another £60-£100 spent out of your wallet.
When you buy the N80 SIM FREE you will once again pay 5-15 times the "upfront" cost compared to buying one as part of a contract.

Remember when you post here a comparison of SIM FREE vS CONTRACT, please include ALL the relevant facts...

To clear this up once and for all, are you willing to disclose your average monthly Top-Up amount?
I can then re-work the comparison figures. IF I am am wrong I will admit it, but I believe you are presenting a misleading half-picture of SIM FREE costs...

10 a month on averge sometimes go over sometimes go under.
& btw im not saying that contract isnt better than payg(unless you get free msgs/calls)
but a sim only 20 day contract is the best
comapre o2 online sim only 1000 txts & 1000 off peak xnet while there highest online is 150txts with about 400mins.

& i will wait till its about around the 300-350 mark before selling on

Today I bought my new Nokia N70 firmware 5, the phone is very good and fast, the only thing I hated is the back shutter of the phone the quality is too bad.

i have exactly the same problem .Especially the problems 1. and 2. get on my nerves.Anyone please tell us why is this happens. My os got worse with the firm update. this is crazy

Thanx gr_rocker for your reply. It seems nobody cares about the post. All the talk is about TOMTOM Mobile on N70.

Anyone else has the mentioned problems? Please, any input will be appreciated.

indeed stick a little to the topic, this thread is made for people who want to upgrade to v5 but aren't sure and want to know the good and the bad from v5 from other users

I bought my N70 from Carphone Warehouse (pay monthly O2 100).

Can I bring my phone to CPW service centre to flash the latest firmware?
How much do they charge for that?

For those who upgraded to version 5, I am curious if they fixed the last/first name sort in contact. My old Nokia 6600 allows me to sort by first name, last name and vice versa but not my N70. Please advice

Well its available on v 2.* too. Go to contacts --> Options --> Settings --> Change --> Last name first
First name first.

You dont need to upgrade for this.

Actually, you're both wrong! I only paid 180 direct from 3 including all line rental and the phone (Free + (12x15) = 180).

Shop around, haggle with telesales people and most of all, don't settle for more than you earn in a week!
