Check this out!! 😎 Nokia are now supporting owners by providing software to upgrade your handset's FirmWare.
I know a few members have been using the hacked Phoenix/ dogtoe route but at least there is now a legit way to upgrade your phone if you can't wait for a Nokia Service Centre.
Only limited number of models supported but I am told that this will grow with time.

Which is the latest version available for N70 (I guess the one you've installed). I can not see any reference in the website

Depends on which network you are on... I know that generic and Orange are on V5.xxx not sure about Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile, 3 etc. The latest Orange fw for the N70 now gives you the option to switch off the much maligned Orange HomeScreen.

Hi there i just upgraded the firmware on my orange n70 ,i noticed you said that the orange menu can now be turned off could you please tell me how to do this many Thx 😊
Just replying to my own post i just found out how to do it 😊
Has anyone had any success updating an N70 with the generic v2.0536.0.2 firmware (to the latest version: 5.0616.2.0.3) ?
When I run the Software Updater application, it just advises, after a minute or two, that no (newer) software version is available. The phone has an Orange PAYG sim (unlocked).
As 2.0536.0.2 is Nokia's own version of the firmware, I am wondering if there is a problem with their database (which cross references earlier firmware versions to the latest).
I bought the phone from Expansys UK last year & from memory, think that the firmware is the first version that Nokia released (12-09-2005).
Hi guys.
thanks for the link, excellent stuff. Updated with no probs but one question....
The version of the firmwear showing on my phone is v3.0546.2.3, 18-11-05, RM-84.
Not entirely sure what the exact version was before but it looks exactly the same version number and the date is still showing 18-11-05 as though no update took place. However the installer downloaded the files and the installed them (took about 15 minutes all in) and when i check for updates it now says my phone is running the latest version of softwear available...Shouldn't it of updated the version and version date or is that not the case?...
I've also just updated my N70 with the Nokia software.
My old firmware version was 2.0539.1.2 (Vodafone branded), my new version is 5.0616.2.0.3 (Vodafone too).
The update did not proceed as flawlessly as I would expect it to...
I took me about three or four restarts of the phone until the software detected the connection to the phone. The software finally downloaded the firmware then (took about 15 minutes). Then 12 minutes later (the progress bar of the flashing process was at around 95% then) the flash process suddenly stopped and displayed "software update failed" (or similar, I was too shocked to write it down 😉). My phone was frozen then, I had to take out the battery to switch it off (it still showed the screen saver). Of course I did not really expect that I would be able to switch it on again. After the first try it seemed to restart itself over and over again (it only showed 'Nokia', nothing more), then after the second try it successfully started!
I've just restored all my settings and programs and everything seems to work fine now... 😊
I'm also having problems. The upgrader recognised my N70, and began downloading the new firmware. It got about 1/3 through and then appeared to stop. I left it for another 20 minutes - and it made no further progress. I pressed 'cancel' and disconnected the phone.
The phone seems to be working fine - but still with old (awful) Orange firmware.
Any ideas?

I dunno what to say or suggest :con? My phone, N70 also on Orange, upgraded flawlessly without any skipping heartbeats. No fail messages at all, I guess the entire process took about 10mins. The latest Orange FW (V5) is so much better than the old version I had (V2).

Howdy,
Mines been upgraded from 2.xxx to 5.0616.2.0.3 24/04/06....
Took all of 10 mins.
Best thing is I now have ACTIVE STANDBY which for some reason my provider (3 australia) blocked me from using with their firmware 😊
Can anyone confirm if they have been able to upgrade handsets with *generic* (i.e. non operator branded) firmware ?
From looking at a number of forums inc Nokia's, I havent seen anyone who has done this.
I have had an email from Nokia customer service advising that the software updater supports generic & operator branded firmware, however, I am not sure this is true (as I cannot upgrade my N70 with generic v2.0536.0.2 firmware - the service just advises that no newer firmware is available).
Thanks
Elite - both branded and generic firmware are supported. You may end up with different version numbers depending on when the various variants were updated.

Rafe, thanks for confirming this. I know that the service is supposed to support generic firmware, it just doesnt appear to be working for me!
Nokia have suggested I speak to the retailer who sold me the handset which sounds like a cop out to me. I bought my N70 sim free from Expansys last Sept so it has the first publicly available generic firmware (2.xx) issued by Nokia themselves. The phone is not locked or branded in anyway & in all respects is working well (albeit a bit slow) so I cannot see what help Expansys could be.
I have also posted a comment on the Expansys forum for the N70 asking for confirmation from anyone who has been able to upgrade their sim free (generic) N70.
The funny thing is, I am not that bothered about actually upgrading my N70 as I now have an N73 (also with generic firmware), but just wanted to test the update service to see how easy it was to use for future reference.
If the device has operator branded firmware, the update will be to the latest branded firmware from the same operator. You can't change from operator branded firmware to unbranded/retail firmware (or another operator's variant) with the Nokia tool.

N/A, not sure if you meant to post here or another thread ?
If you did mean to post to this thread, I know that the software updater wont allow a branded version of firmware to be upgraded to non branded. My point is that my phone is & also has been unbranded & to my knowledge there have been at least 2-3 generic firmware versions since the N70 was released a year ago, therefore the service should support generic (old) -> generic (new) upgrades.
Great news 😃 my phones a lot faster now
I was going to get my firmware flashed at my local service centre but they wanted 20
glad I waited
Is anyone else trying to update right now (8pm, 23rd August 2006)? It's really REALLY slow at the moment. I'd say it's about 10% done (judging by the progress bar - note to Nokia, a slightly more informative interface would be great and stop us worrying so much!) and has taken about half an hour so far.
It's a new service though, so maybe it's just swamped.

I'm right there with you Elite, unbranded n70 fw 2xxx.
Want to upgrade to the latest fw, doesn't seem worth to potential trouble.
I don't have any probs with it now and really, how much faster can it be?

EinZtein, can I ask you a favour - could you try downloading the software updater & running it just to see whether it generates the same response as I got when you connect your phone i.e. "no software updates available" ? You will be prompted if it does finds a new firmware version (& you can choose not to install this).
If the newer 5.xxx firmware is listed for your phone, this would suggest there may be something odd with mine (I have tried it with both an Orange and a Virgin PAYG sim just to rule network provider issues out of the equation - but figured this would make no difference on an unbranded handset - which appears to be the case as no newer firmware was suggested).
The download & install process for the software updater only takes a couple of mins although it can take a couple of mins for the app to check the nokia servers for the relevant firmware update.
I dont know how much faster the 5.xxx generic firmware is & I have not been able to install it (obviously🙄 ) however, although probably not a fair comparison, you certainly notice how much faster the N73 is (even with the initial firmware) in comparison (i.e. I have always found opening text msgs pretty slow on the N70 with the 2.xxx firmware).
If you would rather not do this or dont have time, no problem 😊
Have always improvements in new OS. So You should do that. A lot of people have donne, without problems. But if You are not sure about, go to a Nokia Service Center, and they do that for free.
Well that was a bit more hassle than I'd hoped.
Tried downloading the software after 11pm and it was much speedier.
First update failed for no obvious reason, and the phone had gone to the Nokia white screen.
Disconnected the phone, restarted, then reconnected. This update worked fine - early in the update process Windows found a new device (Nokia ADL Loader or something similar). All seems to be working fine and NO MORE ORANGE HOMESCREEN 😊 (You can switch it off in Tools > Settings > Phone > Standby Mode)

Just upgraded my T-mobile N70 via the nokia app, very nerve racking as 1st attempt i got an upgrade failed message 😞
Tried again & succeeded.
FW now....
F/W V5.0609.2.0.1
01-03-06
RM-84
I was wondering if the tool scans your current firmware for the operator branding or your sim card. If it scans the sim card what would happen if you put a PAY AS U GO sim in the phone for the upgrade?
My T-mobile currently accepts Easy-Mobile, Virgin & T-mobile pay as u go sims.
Just a thought

Hello I have a Nokia 6630 from Japan (702NK in Japan). Just wandering if I can upgrade my firmware from the link you provided.

It seems that you have discovered it yourself, would you please share your findings?
Thank You in advance.
It appears you need a min of 256Mb free RAM on your PC to do this, its not mentioned anywhere in the Requirements, but when I tried to upgrade yesterday that was the message I got. Oh well I needed to add more anyway.
i too have a generic unbranded n70 (from onedaymobile) and i get the same no updates available. 😞
