macwhu wrote:i too have a generic unbranded n70 (from onedaymobile) and i get the same no updates available. 😞
Macwhu, thanks for this. I have been waiting for someone else to confirm this both here, on the Expansys forum (where I bought the phone), the Nokia forum & a couple of others. However, a couple of the other forums (which shall remain nameless) seem to mostly consist of fanboys endlessly discussing rumours about new models or posting N70 vs N73 vs N93 vs K800 comparison photos.😊 The release of this update service, which could be genuinely useful, doesnt really seem to have registered.
Unfortunately, the one place where this issue (generic firmware support) is likely to be confirmed one way or the other: i.e. the Nokia forum, I cannot post on, as the registration process seems to have broken (I have been waiting 3 days for my new user validation mail).
Anyway, although the two of us dont exactly make the findings conclusive, early signs are that, contrary to what Nokia customer services are advising, the Update Service doesnt (yet) support generic firmware.
At this point, I am going to park this issue, retire my N70 to my phone museum & get back to my N73. Hopefully, in a few months, by the time the next firmware update is out for the N73 (which is all I am really bothered about), Nokia will have fixed the Update Service. Good luck to everyone else in the meantime with an N70 & generic firmware.
Elite, I love to try, but I am dependant on my device for work for 24/7 support, I have a VPN client on my n70 and use it to reboot servers that have websites down, so I can't take the chance.
And I don't have any probs with my n70 now, sans a couple bluetooth hang ups a week tethering from my PC, also not really sure how much faster it can get, most screens come up in a second or two at the most.
Just too much risk for me for improvements I MIGHT see.
Maybe if I get brave next week or bored.

EinZtein, sorry, I probably wasnt very clear with my post - you dont actually have to carry out the firmware update on your N70, you just need to see if the Update Service can find a newer firmware image on Nokia's web server. If & when it does, you would be prompted to install it (so in your case, you would just cancel the app & exit). However, it does look like you will get the same response as others with generic firmware i.e. "no software updates available".
btw, using that VPN client on the N70 must be like trying to paint your hallway through your letterbox isnt it ?😉
I will try the update right away and I hope al the languages on the phone will stay the same, but what I feel strange is that when you go to your countr personal nokia site (in my situation it is Belgium) and I go the same way as the uk site I can't find something about the fireware upgrade possibilty. Is it maybe only possible for the UK?
I dled from the nokia UK site the software for the upgrades but where do I find the newest firmware, is it installed when running the Nokia Software Updater? Because I want to charge my phone with some UK branded Firmware.
I from Belgium on Mobistar so I got an almost generic firmware.
I loaded the nokia update software today and started to update.
It needs to be mentioned that I already experienced intermittend connection hangups with my N70 on the usb commection. The connection only worked after a reboot of the fone ...
Anyway the software connected, inspected the fone and downloaded an update. Once the updtae was being effected the fone went DEAD!
I am waiting for a replacement from Orange. Could it be that The Orange version can not be updated with the nokia softaware updater? Or must the fone be deblocked before??
I will read all advices before reupdating!!
regards!
The orange version can be updated, I did that on mine and it updates like normal
Sounds like a bad flash
I think that the connection was unreliable, I wonder why I had the usb problems.
Its always best to make sure there are no apps are running in the background while you're doing it tbh and the same goes with the phone too
I have just bought the n90. No apps installed (yet).
Being new to all this stuff I hope to get my Nemerix BT77 GPS installed under Bluetooth with a Jabra earpice for navigation on my Motorbike. (i think i opt for tomtom mobile)
I would also like to use it for offshore navigation .. any ideas???
I also hope to find a way to control my webserver while on the road ... any ideas folks??
Hope the new one will come in early tomorrow!
maybe the best to do is to backup, remove the MMC, reboot the phone and then start the update.
But It seems though only UK people are doing the flashing of the N70
I Want to read some experiences from Belgian users too
Great!
I've just spent 30 minutes updating from v3.0546.2.3 to... v3.0546.2.3.
I tried it again and realised that what it had said was "Your software is already up to date, you can reinstall it if you wish" which is what I obviously did do.
So why no new v5.xx update for me??!
I'm on o2.
yep i tried again this morning and no joy
at least it almost immediatly told me there was no updates this time
rather than waiting ages.
when it connects is says its a "Nokia N70 (RM-84)"
its an unbranded ivory /pearl one. bought not long after launch
Im on o2 as well and cant get v5... yet.
The first time i upgraded my firmware in the nokia shop i asked the guy there why it only went up to v3 as i knew v5 was available and he told me that each network has their own firmware version. So, although nokia may have released a generic v5 to all operators, until o2 certify it for use with their network and finish making any adjustments they deem necessary it looks like we are all stuck with out of date software :frown:
Seems a bit strange to me as o2 appear to be one of few opperators who dont alter the generic firmware that much themselves unlike orange and their dreaded "home" screen or whatever its called. Guess we just have to wait and see if they ever bother releasing their version or not. It may be that the updates in v5 are of no use to o2 customers at the moment so they dont see the point in releasing it :con?
Thanks for the info Mamoo, though I can't see how O2 can make the decision on what's important for their customers.
Simple things like minimising the music player and having the track info on the main screen is neither here nor there as far as they're concerned!
Just spoke to the clueless o2 woman and had to explain what firmware was.. "off to a winner here", I thought.. 😊
Anyway she contacted "technical" and they said that any O2 store would be able to upgrade to v5 for you.. which countermands what you've said and also defeats the object of sitting on your arse and doing it over the wire..
Like i said, i dont understand why they wont release v5 either as i dont see how o2 even alter the generic firmware in the first place. I just wish they'd hurry up about it though.
All i know is what the guy in the nokia shop has told me and thats that every network has their own (slightly) modified variant of the firmware and that some take longer releasing their variation then others.
You can try taking it to the o2 shop and see what they say but i seriously doubt they'l be able to help as any o2 shop i've been to only looked at me blankly when i mentioned the word firmware and some staff didnt even seem to believe that a process for updating a phones internal software existed !!!
Feel free to try them out but im just taking the nokia software's word for it at the moment that v3 is the latest o2 can offer. If the "tech" guy has suggested going to the shop maybe he knows something we dont and we'l get to see v5 pretty soon but then again maybe the lass you spoke to was just blagging it and trying to get you off the phone! 😡
Victory is mine! I upgraded my generic N70 from:
V 3.0546.2.3
18-11-05
RM-84
to:
V 5.0616.0.3
24-04-06
RM84
So there IS an upgrade available for generic N70's. The whole thing took forever, since I'm in South Africa and bandwidth over here is not what I'm used to back in Europe...
Except for the OVER ONE HOUR wait to download the actual fw upgrade the whole thing went down quite smoothly. After recovering the backup from the card it even kept my "klondike" (card game) high score. Nice.
I do have trouble syncing my Outlook over bluetooth. Anyone had the same?
Update: Restarting the Nokia Suite has solved these problems, so overall the whole update was quite a no-brainer. So far the only difference I noticed is that the Music player has a different icon. I can imagine most changes have gone into improving the internal processes of the phone. Or so I hope.
so you backup'ed your phone using the PC Suite and after the FW you placed the backup back on the phone and everything was like before then?
So the data in your contact list etc...
because I really spent a long time making my contact list from my phone. Thumbnail, email addresses, telephone numbers, full names, ...
Liquid_Li0n wrote:so you backup'ed your phone using the PC Suite and after the FW you placed the backup back on the phone and everything was like before then?
Even though I ended up flashing my phone with the same firmware and lost everything, the backup restored the lot. Contacts, thumbnails, voicedials, ringtones, active standby, Snake high score, Calendar entries... the lot.
So no worries - use Backup and restore after flashing. Takes about 5 minutes both ways. You'll be fine! :icon14:
I didn't use the PC Suite for the backup, though I have used that in the past. For this backup I just copied the phone's memory to the memory card:
Tool -> Memory (card) -> Options -> Backup phone mem.
And there you go.
And after the update you do the reversed, Restore from card.
Just re-installed TomTom yesterday since i upgraded my FW.
It froze about 4 times in a 23mile journey. Feckin useless now.
Is there any way to put my original FW back on? It was originally V2.0537.1.7 18-09-05 RM-84

Hey guys, recently popped back in here atfer a while away and was astounded to see that we can update over the web... no befroe long to, I for one didn't want to take mine down the carphone warhouse and wait god knows how ong to get it back.
Anyway, just wanted to say that I upgraded my firmware via the nokia site today and... everything is sweeeeeet, I don't know if anyone out there has an exact list of what's included in the update but everything seems faster, especially gallery (which NOW has a rename feature! bout time to!), mp3's (which appear properly named and now have several sub menus like itunes= album, artist etc.), the MP3 ringtone issue (that the nokia patch NEVER cleared up for me first time round :frown: ) is non existant and for those of you who are wondering... TomTom works without a hitch! no drop out AND FULL poi's on!!!
It like a buddy said to me... never buy a new Nokia straight off, they are beset with probs! Well it now looks like Nokia have FINALLY sorted everything out on this lil baby.. in your face Sony! 😉
By the way, undated was quite daunting and scary (maybe it's my dodgy USB cable) as took a while and first time round phone wouldn't boot, also had to attempt 4 times as nokia software wouldn't recognise my phone even needed an update!
Well worth it though! don't delay!
---yours, one very happy bunny---

No! Is not possible do a back process with the firmware. But... with me, all works well. I like the last version. Do an install process again for TT.
Beleive the hype... just been out for an hours drive, received 3 calls, 2 texts and each and every single time TomTom resumed as it always should do!!!
Initially, and for a long time I had nightmares with TT mobile 5, no matter what I did... got the latest TT updates, maps and even use an official TT mkII GPS receiver and trust me, it was far from perfect. At one point I was about to give up and opt for the (cheaper than 300series) 'One' unit as when the TT software wants to play nice it is simply a joy to use (have tried route66, no where near as nice). Anyway, it used to consistantly drop and crash all the time, you had to delete and create your bluetooth pairings every five mins and wen you booted up and don't even talk to me about the poi's.
Now... poi's work, the bluetooth hasn't need to be deleted and paired once in 12 times worth of use, calls and text don't crash it... in a nutshell, anyone who had an experience using TomTom with a N70 would know that it was (for want of a better word) a f**king nightmare, now however it's a dream to use and you don't have to lug a TomTom 300 unit around with you like my buddy used to, then didn't and got his car broken into for it! :frown: the best GPS in your phone at last 😉

When I said "all work well" I talk about phone stuff! I dont know about Tomtom... But if it works like You said, in not a nice thing. When, must of people talk about TT, they said very positive things. I saw once it works, and for me is the best GPS software, if work well or not, not sure.

Im dying to update mine from v3.0546.2.3 to the latest v5xxx but I still cant connect my N70 with USB using the latest drivers and PC Suite from the Nokia website.
OK!! At last My N70 is connected with USB after changing the USB port in my pc. ALL my other 8 devices worked with this port but the N70 didnt like it!
But now the Nokia software updater v1.0.88.EN is telling me "cannot find phone"
Whats this all about now ? Im tired of this Nokia stuff!
Sandrof... Nokia are historically AWFUL at providing PC-PHONE connectivity and it's very VERY annoying!!! If your quite loyal (like me, and a bit daft for that very reason!) to one particular phone brand it's a HUGE incentive to f**k them off and just move to whos increasingly looking like the glowing stars in moby phones... SONY/ERICSSON, Nokia, if you're listening, get your act together, in this day and age and simple USB connection should proove NO PROBLEM! :frown:
Sandrof, be persistant and keep trying, god knows I did, it's worth it, they updates is amazing! if TomTom was available on a SONY i'd be there like a shot though! 😡
Yeah, same here. The USB cable with the N70 is as bad as I remember from my 6210. Very annoying, I constantly get "Device not recognised", "Device not working properly" etc...
Seems like something that may be fixed with a firmware update. If you can get your usb connection to work.
does anyone know why my n70 restarts?? thanks a lot!!
