This really does seem to be a network related problem, if you have a sim free phone like me then it seems that the update is available, but orange, voda and o2 there is no update, obviously because the networks havn't released or approved the latest V4 firmware variant, would be interesting to see if t-mobile phones can be updated..

Saw this on the Q & A part of the Nokia update site

6. Can an operator-branded Nokia device be updated with Nokia Software Updater?

Yes, but please note that not all operators may have approved the latest software for use in their devices.

Hey cash, it wont work for me but , go to contacts then options>copy>from memory card. All i get is "zero contacts copied", they must be on the card somewhere just need to find a way. Please say if you managed to do it. Im off to bed here in Dubai, see u later!

Cheers

Gutted to find my O2 phone isn't supported either :frown:

Just been to the O2 site and they wont unlock my phone until I've had it for 12 months, ffs 😡

Guess I'll have to look at the non-official method.

I used pc suite, click on contacts and all the contacts on my mem card appeared, then it asked me if I wanted to update to my phone..I said yes and all contacts were copied back to my phone

There is also an update icon at the top of the pc suite screen

Cash wrote:Warning ..

Be aware that this seems to be very unstable...I was halfway through updating my phone and lost connection with my PC for some reason..now my phone is dead...I will try to revive it....PC and phone were left alone while updating because I know how poor the connecting cable is...

And yes the battery is fully charged

UPDATE..it may be that this is supposed to happen..the updater is still working so I will come back later if it completes..

Ok, this all worked ok..I thought the phone was dead because the screen was off and the usb cable kept connecting and unconnecting, but that is normal, ..just leave the phone alone and plugged in and it will update ok..

The most anoying and irritating thing though is that the phone reverts back to factory settings, and although I backed up my phone contents with pc suite, I cant seem to restore them, I have tried 5 times now, all my contacts, messages installed apps, themes and ringtones I cant get back..

Damn you Nokia...Damn you to HELL

You have to backup and restore both phone memory AND memory card seperately!

Its simple but its easy to miss!

I found this stuff on another forum, and i want to try it myself because many others have updated their n80.

So, today is my biiig day:

Today i did use the Nokia Software Updater to update my n80 (unlocked)
Installed it, and connected the phone using an usb cabel. The software did find my phone after several tries.

It goes, and it were updating, phone turn off. I waited.
In screen, the update was complete, and the message i got is:

Update failed.

Now my n80 is dead:icon14:

Any help is appreciated.

unlocked phones do not work. It has to be a non operator version. I updated my 6630 unlocked Orange and it gave me one with Homescrew.

Can someone who has successfully updated tell me if Flash player is included? If it is, what is the version (press left soft key in the Flash player, select About)?

Thanks!

N80 only has flash lite 1..its pretty much useless..

yea..stupid me..I followed the instructions on the Nokia site..doesnt mention about backing up mem card memnory either ..

Cash wrote:N80 only has flash lite 1..its pretty much useless..

Thanks for the quick reply! Do you know if it supports both standalone and in browser Flash content?

Davethrn wrote:Thanks for the quick reply! Do you know if it supports both standalone and in browser Flash content?

You will be lucky to find flash to work in browser, you need flash lite 2 for that and its not available for N80..not yet anyway

Just flasehd my phone succefully.. the only problem was when restored my backup. The contacts are not available on the phone but on the file manager on PC Suite...

It's strange... I can see all contacts there but not on the phone... I tried everything... copy from memory card, etc! No good 😡

Guess I'll have to copy the sim contacts again

Hi I downloaded the N80 software instaler and ran it .
It says there are no upgradeds for my phone?
I am on Orange how come I cant upgrade?

Ok please please can someone help. My phone has the vodafone version on it and but the software seems exactly the same as the nokia one and is completely unbranded. So now I can't update it. But will Pheonix work? Please reply

Doh !!!!! ... now i cant read...maybe it was the installer where it says back up using pc suite....my brain dont work these days .. i am working 24/7 12 hours a day at the moment

Yes I just checked I am correct .. it says in updater to back up to either mem card or with pc suite.....so I backed up with pc suite...it says nothing about backing up both phone memory and mem card memory ....

I think to back up to mem card if you have one is the best option because there are 2 of us who have backed up with pc suite and we cant restore all previous functionality or settings

_Dx_ wrote:Sh*t this doesnt seems to work on an N80, this is a pain, that nokia Software updater doesnt seems to work well, it killed a friends n80 and im not able to get it back to life, and on NSC told me that they are not able to fix it, Damn u Mexico, this is a shit*y country

I actually thought my N80 was dead and was going to unplug it from the computer.

I thought it was dead for 2 reasons

1, the usb cable kept connecting and unconnecting (I kept getting the conecting sounds from my pc)

2, the screen went blank and the blue light stopped flashing for a long time and I was going to then unplug the cable.

But I decided to leave it, and it did finish updating ok, but the phone did look dead for 5 - 10 minutes while updating.

i can see that this could cause confusion, I dont admit to know all about the N80 and flashing, but I think I know enough, but it did comcern me and I though my phone was a brick for a while.

It could easily cause somebody to pull the plug half way through flashing to try see if their phone will switch on or not.

anybody updating like this just be aware thet your phone will look dead for quite along time...go make a cup of tea, put on the simpsons, put your feet up and relax for 20 minutes 😊...then you will have a perfectly upgraded phone 😊..

Hiho,

A coupla months ago I bought two unbranded, SIM-free N80s from Expansys (one silver, one black) for me and my partner. Now, I had my phone (the black one) updated at the local NSC to try out the v4 firmware and see if it was worth having done.
Now the Nokia updater pops up and I decide to try updating my partner's phone so she can have the later, better firmware. The thing is, the updater says there are no updates for her phone.

It's running v3.0614, and is showing RM-92 with (58.01). What's going on and why can't I update?

Regards, and thanks in advance!

Yes, thats just what happened to me my phone came in a vodafone box though but there is no evidence of branding AT ALL! Should i use phoenix?

Ah, mine both came in generic nokia boxes and I can find no evidence of any branding anywhere. Hohum.

could this possibly be a location issue, for example a phone from asia may not be able to be upgraded with uk firmware ..

I cant remember the numbers for the area that the phones are from ...do a search here, or google, or somebody else may be able to help with that info..

My friend flashed his branded n80 (it had extra apps and everything) The phone came out great with v4 firmware and lost the branding alltogether. This is using phoenix! I'm gonna do it

you have to use pheonix if you want to do that 😊...i and many others have tried and successfully upgraded our phones..but a few phones I know did die when this was tried, but this may be down to not following the instructions EXACTLY..

I upgraded my friends phone from v3.14 to 3.16 usinig pheonix, and his was orange ..he also managed to get it unlocked, cost him 20

i think this firmware thing works with european phones only i am not able to update bye the way i get this msg could not find phone the connection everything is fine i am frm india any idea whats wrong

I'm having trouble installing phoenix but i'm gonna try again when i get home and as long as i follow the instructions very carefully i should be ok, even if i have some form of invisible branding?
