yes..it will upgrade your phone to the generic firmware, although if there are a few network apps on the phone some of these may still remain..make sure you update with the european firmware

Cash wrote:could this possibly be a location issue, for example a phone from asia may not be able to be upgraded with uk firmware ..

I cant remember the numbers for the area that the phones are from ...do a search here, or google, or somebody else may be able to help with that info..

I doubt it's a location issue, as I'd hope that Expansys would have supplied me with UK units. In fact, I'm pretty sure (from memory) that the box stickers say UK or GB...I'll check later.

Hmm.

I have just downlaoded the Nokia updater for my N80, run it and was told no update available. I have version V3.0617.0.6 loaded at present.

Does anyone know if this is a glich or is nokia behind on the european site?????

Neil

i backed up my contacts on my memory card through the phone but now i cant get them back!! And everytime i turn on my phoe it says "installing" anyone hav ethe link to the nokia website help page about this?>?

:icon4: Three not supported.......this sucks big time, is that all of the networks then?:icon4:

"No software updates available." This means there is no new version of software currently available for your specific product. Software selection is made by reading the product code (found on the label under the battery, 05xxxxx) that identifies the exact product type, eg. silver or black, Nokia or operator model. Not all operators endorse the latest software versions available. New software may become available at a later date, however, so please check back every month or so.

I even sent an email to Three for them to tell me whether they could upgrade my firmware as I has TT6 and it doesn't work!!!!!.......no reply as yet...they have 2 days left to contact me before I blow my lid!:icon13:

The update does not take that long..

My update went 100% and it was like 6-7 min, (not sure)
but failed.

I have one question:
Are there any chances that peolpe at a nokia service center can see that i tried to update my phone? or something like that..

Shouldn't be an issue.
You're taking a Nokia phone to a Nokia Service Centre after the official Nokia Software Update process failed.. Entirely their problem...😉

Ok, so now iam sure they cant find out, right?:icon14:

But i do believe, when i first time installed that application, it does say, that they dont take any responsibility for the user if something goes wrong..

(tried to install it once more, nothing about responsibility where mentioned..)

Correct me please.:con?

Anyways, where just wondering. I 'll just play dumb.

Check the FAQ

My phone "died" during an update, what should I do?

Take the phone to your nearest Nokia service center. If the phone is within its warranty period, Nokia will repair the phone under the usual warranty terms and conditions. If the phone is not within its warranty period, Nokia is not liable for any loss as defined within the End-User Software Agreement.

My phone did that glitchy thing last night when someone called me, dont tell me its not been fixed, anyone else?

Cool, didnt remember the FAQ untill you mention it. Thank you mate.

just read this on the nokia site about updating and the sms accelerator patch

2. If you have installed the SMS accelerator patch for your Nokia N80, this will need to be re-installed after the N80 software update. The SMS accelerator patch is available from http://www.europe.nokia.com/A4149142

i downloaded the updater but when i run it it just stays on the starting application screen
but doesnt say not responding on task manager

whats going on

i think its trying to establish a internet connection check that ur firewall doesnt block it and that ur connected to the net

I've recently installed Windows Live OneCare trial (in the hope that in 90 days it will be available in the UK) and that poped up a request to allow the updater, but then the updater just hangs. Had to kill the updater and restart it after allowing it on OneCare and it started fine then.

I've noticed a few other apps just fail when OneCare prompts you about what to do. Slightly different to NIS firewall which will delay the app but not make it fail, so when you allow it to connect to the net the app just continues. A shame NIS is so bloated really.

Just having tried mine which I also got SIM free from Expansys, it also says there are no updates :frown:

I wouldn't bet on Expansys having supplied true UK models despite the sticker. The reason these kinds of places have such things cheap is because they "grey import" them. They might be models compatible for UK use (i.e. they've stuck in a UK charger) but imported cheap from somewhere else.

P.S. My box doesn't say GB or UK. It says "Country variant SS" whatever that means??

Maybe try downloading the updater from another region?

Problem with grey imports is some big corporates refuse to touch them if they go wrong. Hopefully Nokia can't get away with that being that Finland is an EU member and EU law prevents this kind of practice.

My version details...

v 3.0614.0.3
11-04-2006
RM-92
Nokia N80 (58.01)

I've got a "variant PB" - my phone is on orange but I got it online through a website (with contract). It came in a nokia branded box - no updates though :frown:

I Got My Phone In Singapore And I'm In California Usa Right Now Can I Use That Nokia Uk To Update My N80 Or Thats Is Only For Uk Version

dapilot wrote:I Got My Phone In Singapore And I'm In California Usa Right Now Can I Use That Nokia Uk To Update My N80 Or Thats Is Only For Uk Version

I bought mine in Hong Kong, and also am in the US now.

I have the Update software, and it says no update is available.

When I press *#0000# I get

V 3.0317.0.6
03-05-2006
RM-92
Nokia N80 (46.02)

Could be the Asian version of V4 is not out yet.

Ok then lets be honest, has ANYONE managed to do it successfully yet? Its an absolute joke! I have had 3 phones it wont update now i cant update ANY of them and they are uk sim free ffs! I'm sick of it!

slammin wrote:Ok then lets be honest, has ANYONE managed to do it successfully yet? Its an absolute joke! I have had 3 phones it wont update now i cant update ANY of them and they are uk sim free ffs! I'm sick of it!

I have done it ok 😊..I bought my phone sim free in Lithuania with V3.0614, then upgraded with pheonix to V3.0617 and Language pack 1, then updated with Nokia upater last week to V4..No problems at all.

Saw on this Nokia thread that a lot of people have what they believe to be generic N80s but no updates available.

It seems the ones from eXpansys which are the 58.01 variant might be UK generic models but the update software does not support UK generic yet.

The 58.01 variants can now be upgraded through the Nokia Update software. I've just upgraded mine, takes about 10 minutes for the software to flash the phone.

Has anybody heard anything about the vodafone version being put up on the Nokia site. I contacted Vodafone about the firmware and this is the reply that I got;

"Thank you for contacting Vodafone Customer Service regarding Updating your Nokia N80.

I am sorry to know that you are unable to update your Nokia N80. I suggest you please contact the manufacturer as we do not have any information about the firmware update." 😡 😡

yup... managed to update my n80 too... im from the philippines.... it was my second n80 since before when i tried to update the firmware using phoenix... something messed up and it was bricked... but it was under warranty and was replaced with a new one but with still the old firmware 3.0614... unwilling to go through again the phoenix thing... i held with that firmware until now i saw the nokia updater.... still have lots of months under warranty... i tried it again and luckily it went well without a hitch... even the restore function of data suite worked... but all symbian files did not restore.... will play with it a little now..😊

Just thought I would add to comments. I have just updated ny N80 (o2) using Noki update and it was succesful without any problems. Go for it.

This is the same bullshit I got from them.... but after several phone calls to vodafone support managers, they have agreed to let me flash it to v4 firmware.

They said they will need to give me an unlock code, (bonus.. handset will be unlocked for free!) and then i can take it to carphone warehouse and they will authorize an upgrade within my warranty!

Cool. Updated now. Did the initial update and then did a follow up OTA update from Connect->Device Manager.

Version now is

v4.0623.0.42
20-09-2006
RM-92
Nokia N80 (58.01)

First impressions is that it's more responsive navigating menus. No particular bugs found so far.

I found ine more resposive at first becuase you dasically have a fresh install, but I found it will slow down as you use it and add more apps, but even with this I still have never really had any problems with mine and i am more than happy with iy 😊..
