Calendar not enough? - enter Papyrus!

It's now official (and rather ironic, considering my editorial of today), but all those who find the S60 3rd Edition Calendar restricting can now use a more fully-featured third party alternative. Enter Papyrus 1.2 (ignore the version no. and compatibility list, that's just Handango being slow). Ewan's already onto it, with a review in progress....

Read on in the full article.

Immediately after I read the news about the availability of Papyrus for S60 3rd I purchased it.

The good news: it is a fantastic calendar application and far better than Aqua Calendar which I also used on my N73. Papyrus is very intuitive.

The bad news: serious issues and currently unusable. It appears that I cannot leave the application. I tried everything. EXIT does not work. The worst thing about this is that it does not store the settings and registration key. So after I rebootet my N73, the registration key had to be entered again and all settings were back at default.

Also, I noticed that when changing the categories, I could not leave the dialog where you select the categories to be used.

This is clearly an unfinished product. I expect a new version within days as this is completely unusable.

Thanks for the pointer to AquaCalendar - I'll see if Ewan wants to do the Papyrus review as a head-to-head - it would make a lot of sense!

Steve: i think that you guys should wait a bit before reviewing Papyrus. For some reason and even though the beta testing was going well and Papyrus was approaching its first really stable version, it's been rushed out while there was still several issues remaining. We haven't had any explanation as to why it's been released so early but you can be sure that an update is going to come very soon to fix some of the most pressing bugs. The current release version just isn't up to the usually high quality standard of SBSH.

Papyrus saves its settings (including your registration key) when it exits. So if it crashes first, it won't save your registration key and you'll have to enter it again. The workaround is to enter the key then exit *immediately* using the Menu->Exit command so that the key is saved once and for good. You can then launch Papyrus again and use it. Of course, if the exit bug appears as soon as you start it, you won't be able to exit it normally so that won't work.

Looks good but unusable on my N80. It saves alarms for events when I specify none, it won't save the entry title, even after editing, and won't save any edits to an entry.

Glad it had a trial, as would hate to have bought this

I've been following RoyDev's progress and the poor guy has had so much pressure from people begging him to release the app. He kept saying "10 mor days" and then another 10 .....

However - the 12 day trial I downloaded immediately decided it only had 2 days to go. The day view included memos from the previous day (something the month view didn't do). And the app would simply not quit and then consumed all available memory. I couldn't get it to quit.

Having reset the phone I located the icon in the menus and selected "remove" - that didn't work. In the end I used the application manager to finally rid the phone of this app.

It does look good - it does appear to offer the functionality that I (think I) need.

But right now - far, far too unstable. On an N80 anyway.

Slart.

I've downloaded and set Papyrus on my N73, and I'm experiencing the same problems you guys have. I can't exit the app, it won't accept a meeting starting one day running over to the next, titles are stored but not shown on the entry pages. I hope I get full trial access when the proper release is available. I've used apps in the past that failed on a first trial option and when I installed a subsequent release the trial wouldn't run as I'd had a previous version installed.

I take it all back (what I said above). This new fix has resolved all my issues and now provides an excellent calendar function for my N80. With support as offered by this company, this looks like a worthwhile purchase.

I tried the updated version and it installed okay. However - launching it from the card caused a Memory Error. The phone then crawled (my mail for exchange icon turned into a circle with a question mark in it for some reason) and nothing else would load. I turned it on and off and it came back - but with the default theme!

I'm sorry - but I'm going to wait a while before trying this again. Roy says he tends to deliver minor updates at a rapid rate.

I did have to laugh at my-symbian (can I mention them here?) posting that a new "robust" PIM had been launched!

Sounds to me like a (possible) problem with your card. If you take the card out the N80 will revert to the default theme. I've got the program installed on my 1GB card and it runs without any problems and I've had other programs running at the same time too.
