Good news for E61 owners - firmware 3.0633.09.04

Yea, where's the update for E70. For the better phone of the E-Series it deserve at the very least to have it's new firmware released first.

I'ts bad enough that the E-61 is more popular, undeservingly so.

I bought an E70 and an E61. Sold the E70. It has terrible reception strength compared to the E61, especially indoors, and is only tri-band, plus the front keypad is much too small and difficult to read. Never did understand why it was more expensive than the E61, in my opinion the 61 is far better. My .02

Recently purchased E61.
Happy with phone.
But
Upgraded to 3.0633.09.04.
Have tried to install oggplay and a theme and get
"Certificate error.
Contact the application supplier."

Any thoughts?

Henry

Can anybody give a quick rundown on what to expect when updating to V3 firmware, such as whether you have to reinstall half your apps and themes? I read one post above saying backup was fine but that (s)he lost some programs like worldmate (which I use often)... does that mean you just have to reinstall or does that mean that the new firmware won't run the program properly? And do you lose registration info on programs with the F/W U/G?

Also I have just installed nokia software upgrader and it can't even find the phone... Even though the pc suite icons show it is found ok. The upgrader looks for the phone then the icons drop out of contact with the phone, then reconnecting the phone doesn't make it visible to the upgrader. Killing the pcsuite app doesn't make it visible to upgrader. This kind of s/w buggery makes me think twice about whether it's worth taking the risk to upgrade!

My E61 is a Vodafone issue and I have V2 but updater tels me it is the latest. So I guess its back to the supplier approving firmware upgrades and if they don't....you can't get it.

You likely lose all your contacts, messages and installed programs. This is what happened to me. After I restored the backup from my memory card, not all programs worked properly so I had to reinstall some.
Even the connection settings were restored properly, they did not work after the update. I needed to manually enter them again.
World Mate needed to be 'registered' again as well.

So if you decide to update, make a backup, reserve plenty of time and the SIS and JAR files at hand.

Cheers,

Hi all,

I have an E61 and I am desperate to upgrade to v3 (particularly for the WiFi improvements). However, when I run the Nokia Software Updater (latest posted version on Nokia site), it detects my phone successfully but reports that no updates are available.

I am in the UK and on an O2 business contract and the phone is as it left the factory (I've not buggered about with it - except to change the certificate installation issue). Is there any specific reason why I shouldn't be able to download and upgrade to v3? Is there anything I can do to 'fool' the updater s/w that my phone is entitled to the update?

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

Pete

Go here:
http://www.averageadmins.com/blog/2006/11/12/force-flashing-the-nokia-e61/

Download the latest NSS client and it'll allow you to re-write the phone product code which will then trick the NSU into thinking your phone might be upgradeable.

Your phone's product code can be found under the battery.

My original E61 product code was 0538289, which always gave me the "no update available" message using firmware v1.x, but thru trial and error I finally rewrote it as 0523307 (generic UK). I tried a bunch of other codes but they all give the same "already up-to-date" message.

Using the replacement code above I successfully upgraded from v1.x to v3.x firmware, with no keyboard issues at all. Be aware that once you do a firmware update, you can't go back, so if the update ends up messing up your keyboard layout, you may end up in a bit of a bind!

Note that my phone is a generic, factory-unlocked UK model, bought in Canada on the Expansys.ca website (product originated in UK).

Good luck! BTW, the update is worth the hassle.

Hmm.....

Thanks ever so much for the detailed response. The code you suggested resulted in the usual 'no updates available', so I tried the instructions exactly as per the above link. I used 0524755 but now the symbol shows japanese yen.

Any ideas for any other UK specific codes that will allow the s/w updater to download?

ALSO, I am now prompted for a password for my memory card. I have never set one before. I have searched *everywhere* I can think of on the web, but I can't find out a way of resetting any password on the card. Of course, my phone settings were backed up to the phone!!

Any ideas
Cheers

OK - found the password !! It was a very old password that I set for RemoteLock (not the one that was set before I reflashed). VERY strange. Is there a different remotelock code for the internal/flash memories - this suggests so...

I recently updated my 2x fw to the 3x. My e61 is mch more responsive, but my voice dialing stopped working. Has anybody else noticed this or give me help on a fix? Thanks

Can anyone suggest a product code that will enable my UK keyboard to work properly?

The following symbols are wrong:
 = Japanese Yen
\ = , (although its more like a reversed comma)
/=?
?=/

Thanks
Pete

I can remember what cose I used but the 307 rings a bell!

Good luck

Thanks for the info on the firmware upgrade, Boono... It sounds like living hell for me and I would have to allocate a couple of days (& migraines!). for now I'll stick with V1! 🙄

Hi, I am on T-Mobile UK and sent a complaint into them (and to Nokia too) that it is not good enough that 8 months or so after v2 came out, they have not released an upgrade for their customers. It totally sucks, and has put me off them. They are silly as I may never buy a T Mobile deal after this contract is up as a result, and will just get an unlocked phone next time. All so they can try and shove T-Zones and other useless crap down my throat. I can't believe their developers cannot quickly come up with a vendor-specific version of the Nokia firmware, it's just rubbish.

Please anyone else suffering like this, email your providers customer service or the telcos will continue to practise like this.

The response I got from cust. services was that the new version is in 'testing' and perhaps my handset is faulty, maybe I should return it! Might be the quickest way for me to get the new version 😉

I have a question for all of those who has updated their Nokia E61 to ver 3.x firmware. I have not updated my Nokia E61 since it was purchased back in April of 2006. Reason being is that Nokia took a great feature out which I use alot, that was ussing the shortcuts in Web Browser, i.e. when you press 1 it takes you to Bookmark, 2 search with in the page, 3 takes you to previous page, 9 to enter URL, etc.

These thing makes it great 1 handed device especially when you are doing something else with you other hand or driving etc. (I know driving, I like to look at things like stocks and news when I am stuck in traffic)

I know Nokia screwed them up with 1st update what they did is that you have to pres and hold the select (bottom left key) and #1 key to select bookmarts, and so on for the other cool short cuts with in web browswer.

So can some one please verify that Nokia brought these great features back?

Thanks alot

No, you still need to hold the blue function key to get the shortcuts in the web browser.

I've only owned an E61 for 2 weeks, and this is my first day here, so forgive me if this is a stupid misunderstanding on my part, but...

I noticed that in v1, the shortcuts were strictly numeric. ie. the 6th icon along (originally Messages) was reached by pressing number 6

However, in v3, the shortcuts are by position: so for Messages (position 6, which is second row, second icon), I press Fn-5... which is second row, second button on the blue keys on the keyboard.

ie. Rather than being a 8th-button = 8th icon correspondence, it's now a direct visual mapping of button position to icon position. (second row, fourth icon = second row, fourth button).

If so, perhaps the reason for requiring the Fn button being pressed is to enable the * and # keys to be used. And if so, I have to admit this is a sacrifice worth making - it makes the mapping more instinctive, and enables another two buttons (* and #). This actually mirrors the way that SonyEricsson shortcuts work, and explains why I found the E61 v1 FW's numerical method to be less usable than the SE method - at least, before the v3 update.
