Right then.
I downloaded Fring last night. Its 'Mobile VoIP Telephony, Text Messaging & Presence, Leverages your Data Plan to save you money Designed for GRPS, 3G & Wi-Fi Networks'. The setup is a complete doddle, and just requires you to enter your phone# and email on the website to receive a free SMS (unless your SP charges you to receive) with a link to the software. That then downloads with interactive walkthru screens on your PC, but if your used to installing apps on your N80 you will fly thru.
Connects with Skype and Google Talk users. And can also use a jabber client to message MSN contacts should you want to.
At first use its pretty tidy... nice GUI, easy connection to my wifi (in this test case) have done a couple of UK to UK skype calls which from a 10Mb to a 2Mb line the call quality is very good. Also called some US GoogleTalk users and Skype users... and its much the same. The first few seconds connecting there is a delay... but after that its been free chat.:icon14: You can almost forget your using VOIP. You can use you skype out credit also for calling out.
The customer service is prompt. I sent a made up easy problem for them to solve last night and had a reply in my mailbox this morning. They prioritise the urgency of their support mails too, so if it was this quick with a low priority then it should be real good with a high one! 😉

Of course, to every positive there is a negative.
This negative is that from a fully charged battery last night, the phone turned off over night, and then connected to fring at 0900hrs, its now needing recharging 😮 ... although I have had about 25 mins of skype chat and 10 mins cellular. Also of note, this is in Beta at the moment... so its free... BUT that can change at full release.

I'd give it a try, but I'm absolutely terrified of altering my Truphone settings. It was a complete nightmare getting that to connect.

I am guessing it doesnt use the sip functions of the phone, so really I dont think it will interfere, I think it looks like a stand alone program.
I might give that a try, can you call landlines from it?
I dont think i know anyone on VoIP. (i must be looking for excuses to upgrade my firmware!!) 😊

downloaded the sis and installed it...
Icon appeared in my apps folder...
Runs, got the loading screen but then just quits...

ut666, Im on same f/w version. Did you install to MMC and not have it auto start?? Mines set that way and its fine. Drop a mail to support or stick a post on the fring forum... its well followed my fring mods there.

Pretty cool that it uses the N80 address book also 😊
I dont understand why Skype didnt buy out fringe for example as a stopgap until they get their system sorted out, especially if fringe works well as kontraband has suggested ..
yeah, i have that setup too Cash...
not sure why they didnt buy it out... maybe thats frings idea... hence go with the big 2... skype and google... they have a poll on their forum about what other IM / VoiP providers users would like.... so it looks like they are on the ball. 😊
and yeah, it nicely integrated with the phonebook should you need it. If anything... fring is helping skype by possibly getting users to buy skype out credit.

kontra, Do u live in Sheffield and know of any WiFi spots? (no more pigs jibes :tongue: )
Do you guys use the VoIP around the house and stuff or do you manage to find places to use the WiFi out and about?

al18ex, yeah I live in Sheff... theres quite a few hot spots but not many free ones... center of town pubs have some free ones... I know for a fact the wig and pen has one... do a google search for sheffield free hotspots or sheffield hotspots and theres a good few sites that list all the pubs and stuff....

I use at home, but also out, many bars and cafe's where I live (and where I spend most of my time 😉) have wifi hotspots, I am lucky though that nearly all hotspots where I live are free .. but in UK you may find that you will have to pay for many..

Didnt really try it yet, got nobody to call on skype, but i tried a test call last night and noticed a couple seconds delay, which was quite bad, but I need to do more testing.
But the text chat will be useful (if it works ok) because I text chat alot.. so its not all that bad...

You're right. I knew they were the same guys from Kazaa, but somehow thought they were from Israel.
Anyway, haven't been able to test Fring, cause I just won't get the SMS from them. 😞
