Hi everyone, please be gentle with me as this is my first post on these forums lol!!
I've read the various posts whereby an n80 can be flashed to be an n80ie, but it seems that when people restore their contacts etc from the backup on memory card, because this would have been done using the old version software, they lose the internet folder of an n80ie and it is placed within the My Own folder.
Is there any way that this can be avoided and if so, what is the sequence one should adopt from step 1 through to step X?
Also, has anyone found a higher power battery which will work with this phone? I did speak to Club Nokia and they suggested a BP-6M with 1100mah output. I said that on Nokia UK it didn't show as compatible with the n80, but they said that the website is currently being updated and that according to Nokia Europe which they were checking from it would fit. Unfortunately I then lost the call to them. Has anyone tried this battery or does someone have another battery suggestion along with link to supplier(s)?
Hope you can help.
Cheers
Rick 😊
Can't help you with the first part I'm afraid. I've been to scared of bricking my phone to attempt the upgrade to a N80ie.
There were a couple of threads about bigger batteries, here's one for example,
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/47483/
which had mixed response. Not sure about the battery you mention, not one I'd seen mentioned on here before. If Club Nokia say it's compatible.....possibly.
There are some extended batteries available on ebay and the like, but as to their effectiveness - well, as I say, the reports are mixed.
Hopefully someone else will be able to help you with the first part of your query, and then maybe they can convince me to flash my phone too!
Regards,
BHLC.
Yes it can be done but you dont use backup and restore. You have to use the sync. function in pc suite otherwise as you say you loose the internet folder among other things. If you check out the posts in this thread it may help http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/54352/&page=16
I was scared about upgrading to the IE too but the nss part takes a few second and I used NSU for like 15 mins

NSU? I thought it had to be done with phoenix and all that stuff? That's what was putting me off. Well, that and the fact that I don't really know if I will be using much of the additional functionality.

They should put down the crack pipe at Club Nokia, the shape of the BP-6M is not even similar to the BL-5B's, it's about 40% wider. And it's 970mAh, not 1100...

That's right. I wouldn't do a backup and restore. The way I would do it is by selecting all the contacts, save them to the memory card, do the upgrade, and then import them back to the phone.

Come on give Nokia a break....we all know they have no idea what they are talking about when it comes their own phones 😉 😊 😊..
Lol! I'll have a pint of whatever they're smoking over at Nokia then!
So, it seems from that linked thread ref. the long life batteries that initially they were shite but seemed to get a bit better with age and repeated charging, but still not convinced and no posts since mid last year stating whether or not they got anywhere near to what people were expecting, ho hum.
Thanks to all for the advice about syncing not backing up prior to flashing the phone. May I just ask as a complete newbie, in NSS how do I change the phone code? Do I just plug the phone into the pc, start up NSS and see what happens/enter text into a certain field? Sorry if it's an obvious question but I don't want to cock it up!
Cheers

p.s. I forgot to ask you gurus, is there any way of changing font colours in the calendar application. I'm thinking of things like when I put an important meeting into the calendar which is subsequently going to show up on the desktop (cool feature which keeps me coming back to symbian os), I'd like it to stand out in say a red colour. Is this possible?
And another (possibly) daft question from me which is probably so obvious it should be kicking me in the arse for asking - if I connect the phone via WiFi from my home network is all traffic then free as long as I'm connected that way, and am I definitely not using data via my Vodafone connection, rather just using my home broadband connection?
Sorry if these are blatantly obvious but I'd rather ask and know than not ask and be unsure.
Cheers
Rick

No all you have to do is use one of the codes that Cash posted and change the code with NSS and just use nokia software updater. I dont use voip much but its a good thing to have😊

Can't be done with the standard calendar application but is possible if you use one of the third party ones which are available.

oh - now that IS interesting. I'd read a bit about it, and thought you had to use Phoenix. Plus I'm sure I'd seen other people ask if you could use NSU to be told "no, otherwise we'd all be doing it that way"..
is this a new way of doing it, or have I missed something?
It wasn't possible until quite recently ... but now it is

Yea as soon as we knew this was possible the thread about flashing to N80ie was updated and highlighted in red 😊...just have a read of the thread and you will see ho easy it is 😊..

Aha! A question I can answer! (I havn't done the IE upgrade for similar reasons as you).
There is no way Vodaphone can charge you for that unless they are your internet server
The best way to tell is to check there is the WiFi icon on the top right hand corner of your screen, and that your 3G connection icon is not connected, as demonstrated by my beautiful assistant, but massively over sized photo below:

Now for your arse kicking:
😱:viking:
... damn it, couldn't find an animated boot
Nice theme you have there. What is that?
robnash wrote:Nice theme you have there. What is that?
and whats the "new sms" text at the bottom left of the screen ?

Hahaha! Possibly, but after having downloaded NSS, i can't even get it to find my phone!
Oh well....
BHLC wrote:Hahaha! Possibly, but after having downloaded NSS, i can't even get it to find my phone!Oh well....
you need to have the nokia usb cable driver installed also,
Best thing is to uninstall everything nokia related, download and install the new nokia software suite (it contains all the drivers you need)
re-install NSS and then try again ...should work fine 😊...and make sure you have no dirt or fluff on the usb cable connectors
Cheers Cash, but I got the new version of PC suite with the cable driver...I;m wondering if I set NSS up wrong - it's got all those choices at the start with Virtual USB, F1 USB etc etc.
You'll have to forgive my ignorance, I'm from Norfolk, generally we can't abide technology much as it gets in the way of us sleeping with our knuckle-dragging siblings.

haha nice description of your fellow Norfolkians (forgive me if that not the right term)
Its been ages since I did this, but I think you have to choose usb choice...cant be 100%, but its not going to ruin your phone so just have a mess around with the choices until something works and it recognises the phone
Cash you bloody marvel! I finally got it to work, by uninstalling PC suite, and putting on the stand alone phone driver. Now a proud owner of an N80ie, now all I got to do is work out what's different!

Haha ..nice one 😊...first thing you goto do is look at some voip sip stuff like truphone or gizmo ..

Well that's on the list.....but I don't actually know anyone else who uses VOIP. (that Norfolk thing again - god help me, I'm drowning in the shallow end of the gene pool)

If you go to truphone and get that you can make free calls in the UK to landlines untill the end of march over wifi or included in a data plan, so worth it just for that 😊..
I've flashed my 3 branded N80 to Internet Edition and all went well. I did have the internet folder before I restored my backup from the memory card and the internet folder dissappeared as already mentioned on these forums (didn't see posts until I'd restored my backup!). Can someone confirm what is in the internet folder? I think most of the missing items are in the "my own" folder and any that aren't I have downloaded, but I would just like to check. Does the restore from memory card cause any known problems to the functionality of the phone?
Thanks
Thanks for the replies everyone - much appreciated.
Considering my arse well and truly "virtually" kicked lol 😊
What calendar apps can you lot recommend which will let me change font colour etc? and also will such an app automatically replace the default calendar on my front screen etc and are they free or do they cost and are they worth it?
And another thing whilst I'm at it, this phone is going back to the Nokia shop tomorrow for a (already spoken with them and got ordered) replacement one owing to amongst other things, the screen occasionally just loses it and goes funny colours obscuring whatever is on the desktop (mostly a horrible lime green colour). Does anyone else have this problem, is it a known fault with this model? Should I tell them I want a different model (perhaps n93 as the n93i isn't yet out according to them)?
Cheers
Rick

You wont be able to substitute or add another calendar app to the standby screen I am afraid, I dont think its possible to add anything to the standby screen.
The screen problem is a known fault and from posts here just seems to be a loose connection within the phone.
