Im not as technically minded or clever as everyone on here seems to be. So i was wondering if anyone could help me out with the new edition of firmware?! I have a vodafone branded N95 and have done nothing to it since ive got it with regards to updates etc. Is there an update availabe that will benefit me at all?! How do I download it onto my phone etc?!
Many Thanks in advance.
You don't have to be clever to use the forum search function or google.
But yes, there is a generic firmware update available for generic N95's. Yours is not, it's a Vodafone version of the firmware, so you will have to 'trick' the Nokia Updater into thinking it is by changing the product code in your N95. Either that, or what for an updated version of the Vodafone firmware.
It's early days, but reports are coming in of faster GPS locking, better camera results, faster UI/Menu's and less memory leaking problems.
Plenty of threads around to help you more 😊
I have just posted in this thread about upgrading my T-Mobile firmware to the newer generic one, it would be exactly the same process for you so might be a good starting point.
It depends if you want to keep the Vodafone firmware, or switch to the generic one which will remove all vodafone restrictions and branding (like no voip)
Stay with vodafone firmware
Back up your phone memory to your memory card or PC first. Then connect your phone to your PC in PC Suite mode. Open Nokia Software Updater (download and say you have N93 if you dont already have it) then it will find your N95 and update you to latest firmware.
Get generic firmware
Do the same as above but first download NSS then change your product code to euro 1.
I have a voda uk phone and would like to upgrade to a generic firmware.
This may sound stupid because no one else seems to have asked but where do you actually get the Nokia software Uploader and that other program to fool the uploader into thinking you have a generic build already?
It doesn't appear to be part of the nokia suite and on the Nokia support page of their web site the N95 isn't even listed as having an update.
Thanks :icon14:

The Nokia Software updater is founder here http://europe.nokia.com/softwareupdate
Just select any other N series phone the software is the same. The updater that you download selects the appropriate firmware and downloads it so make sure you have a fast connection it the N95 has a 100 meg download i have heard.
And the software that changes the product code well is unofficial doing so will invalidate your warranty so if your phone gets bricked or your pc crashes or anything during firmware flash and you have changed the product code, your on your own, as changed product code invalidates warranty. The software to do this is is called Nemesis Service Suite. I will not post the link as that whats google is for and also im unsure if its allowed on these forums.
Thanks, excellent advice! 😊
And one other thing, if i go for the Voda upadate, will the phone be locked again as I currently use a Virgin mobile sim? Thanks

The firmware isnt what locks the phone its something called a Sim Lock, if your phone is already unlocked nothing will happen except the Vodafone customiziations and the removal of VOIP which Vodafone have done with their firmware.
Right - ok, thanks. Now I feel fully informed as to whether I risk the generic or go for the safe voda option. 😊
well i have simfree N95 and just tried the Nokia update site, downloaded the update software but it says there is no update available and my current firmware is upto date
V10.0.018
15-03-07
RM-159
Nokia N95 (66.01)

I doubt very much if any of the networks have produced their own version of the new firmware, especially as there isn't updates available for all the generics product codes yet.
I have a N95 from o2. Getting the same message as Clive. Do I need to change the code? If so, how do I do this
Thanks in advance
Bust
Will the contract operators eventually get this firmware update or is it a case of no chance and the only way is to change the product code? I was thinking of going into T-Mobile today and demanding the firmware as the product needs improving 😊

I guess what happens is...Nokia produce an updated firmware and start making it available to the generic phones, but they then also send it to the networks who will apply their customisations and then make it available to their customers, but this probably takes awhile, if at all.
Can we use NSS with Vista? As it's not recognising it for me?! :S
Yes, I used NSS on Vista to change my product code the other day. Also works with x64 versions of XP and Vista.
I see!
So I'm having problems - so I have questions!
I'm using the NSS program, and trying to understand it! When installing the program which USB option do I choose? And when it has downloaded, do I need to install that seperate USB driver that it asks?
Oh the confusion! :con?

You need to install the top option - Virtual USB. On mine the driver installed itself, but you may have to do it manually, but it does need to be installed.
Sorry, I forgot to say you need to set NSS to XP compatable mode and "disable visual themes". Right click on the shortcut and go to properties, then Compatibility.
Choose Virtual USB and off the top of my head I can't remember if I let it install the seperate USb drivers. Remember to shut NSU and PC Suite down when you're using NSS though.
Wooohooo!
Yes, thanks guys! That worked!
😊
Thanks to everyone on this thread, I have now changed my Vodafone N95 to the generic euro 1 model once I worked out I could not put euro 1 in and used "0536062" EURO1 - Plum instead of the Vodafone 0547869.
Now got rid of all that Vodafone crap on my phone!
Peter 😊
Nice to have it all 'clean' isn't it?
I was T-Mobile so there was actually very little customisation (only the Web N Walk logo instead of the globe icon for the web browser) but Voda tend to really go for it with customisation and that pi$$es me off. Whats worse is the stupid vodafone logo on the fron the of their N95s, at least T-Mobile put theirs on the battery cover so its not obvious and you can always just get a replacement battery cover!
So tempted to try this as called into T-Mobile today and they weren't aware of any firmware update and told me to go to the Update section of their website (errrr it doesn't exist!!).
If I remove the T-Mobile firmware, how do I connect to Web N Walk as I've bought this addon?
So you can change your n95 into a generic one ie unbranded?
Anyone done this on an o2 n95? What would i be losing, anything important? Is it worth doing it to update the firmware?

I am on the 'web n walk' rate too! And I didn't have to put anything in again to get my mobile set up!
It seems to save it all!

Ah presumably the backup stores all this info then!

I've got a Voda too, please can you elaborate a bit on this? I've not seen the software yet but does it ask you just to type 'EURO1' into a box? If so, what did you need to type instead? Was it just 0536062? thanks.:icon14:
Well, I figured it out and changed the code. :icon14:
However, the Nokia updater says there is no update for my phone. When I went back to NSS to check the code it said 'Reading Values error'.
So does that mean it's knackered and I won't be able to upgrade?
Phone seems to work ok still though. Knew it would go wrong!
EDIT: OK well now it will read the code but it's gone back to the old one. I've tried again to change it and when I close and reopen the NSS the code just goes back. wierd!
Are you ticking the box next to the Product Code field?
That's the one! Thanks - really nervous about this for some reason! Didn't want to click anything in case the phone busts into flames! LOL
