Firmware updating Help!

61 replies · 18,481 views · Started 01 May 2007

I was right to be nervous! Did the update, and now the phone says "Start-up failed, contact retailer".

Oh bother!! :frown:

Oh dear, you've got a few options, if you got it from somewhere like Car Phone Warhouse just take it back tell them it's broken, they should replace it.

If you bought it direct from a phone company then don't worry it's under warranty, although strictly speaking you've broken the terms of the warranty it's more than likely they will just swap your phone out. Tell them you tried to do a firmware update with the Nokia Software Updater and it broke, obviously don't mention about the product code 😉

You can also take it to your nearest Nokia Service Centre, they should be able to sort it out under warranty!

Barn, I'll bring my laptop in tomorrow and we'll have a go at fixing it. Mine updated okay and the one problem I had seemed to fix itself.

If you run NSS again, does it report back a product code? If it does, is there any chance that you can just run Nokia updater again?

For the Nokia Software Updater to work the phone needs to load it's USB stack, if the phone isn't booting into the OS then NSU won't see it I'm afaid.

Many thanks for all your replies - its appreciated, especially DaveC.

Well, it's all sorted now. I found another thread which reported the same problem on a Voda handset. So I held Green, * and 3 while turning the phone on and it performed a hard reset.

My personal oponion is that its vodaphone settings on the restore which confuses the standard firmawre becuase after the upgrade it was fine until I tried to restore my settings - same with the other chap.

Anyway, all cool now. :icon14:

Tried the product code change and update last night and all worked, fantastic, no more branded T-Mobile! Lost a few apps in the process but should hopefully be able to reinstall today.

I updated my firmware a few days ago, I was on product code 0547686 (not sure where it's from, I bought it on eBay, so could be from anywhere lol), but the firmware was generic and it's SIM unlocked.

There wasn't any updates available for my product code, so I backed the phone up, changed the product code to Euro 1 - 0536062, updated the firmware (went without a hitch) then restored the backup to the phone. All the contacts, calendar, messages, went across no problem, but some of the settings and the profiles didn't come across, which meant I had to go through and check them all again. Also some apps didn't come over, but I just reinstalled these.

Last resort before taking in for repair is to try a hard reset

1. Power off the phone (e.g. remove then replace battery)
2. Hold doen the followinf three buttons * 3 GREEN
3. Power on phone (still holding the three buttons)
4. Wait 60 seconds (still holding the three buttons)

Try this several times and if the N95 still isn't booting up it needs repaired.

Edit: Sorry, did not notice you already found the above solution elsewhere! 😉

Did mine succesfully, very easy, NSS flashed it to the euro1 code someone posted, updated using nokia SU and then put all the backed up data back, didnt take much longer than 5 mins.

Havent really noticed much difference to be honset, camera seems slightly faster, but menu/media menu still seem slightly laggy, maybe ill notice the diff over time

anyone know when the nokia upgrade site will carry the upgrade for my sim free uk N95, it keeps telling me no upgrades available

If you change the product code on a branded phone then update the firmware to the latest Euro1, is there a way it can be returned to the original branded firmware if for example you had to take it back for a wonky slider?

They haven't got round to putting up firmwares for all variants of N95 it will happen eventually just have to wait.

Not sure, since posting this someone on another forum said that NSU just checks the version against the list of firmware releases for that product ID to determine if you need an update, so if the version number on your phone is higher than the one listed for your product code, it won't backdate to the earlier (branded) version because it thinks you have a more up-to-date firmware.

If this is true Im not sure what happens when they release for example, the Orange branded version with the same version number. On my N70 it says Im up to date but asks me if I want to reinstall the same firmware, so I wonder if it would do the same if they released an Orange version of v 11.0.026 as well, say you're up-to-date but allow you to re-flash (and hence putting the orange version back on)

Just to add something useful to this topic, and having followed it to find out how to do the updates, i have a 4 day old N95 on Orange, NSS reports it as having the following details;

Orange
Product Code - 0548170
HW Code - 5650
Manufacture Month - 56.12599

I have an Orange branded n95. I used NSS flawlessly to change the product code to the euro 1 code. Interestingly I had to disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it midway, because my PC informed me that the phone had been disconnected. As soon as I plugged the USB cable back in, the upgrade continued without a problem.

The first time I performed the upgrade, I put all my old settings back on the phone, using a PC Suite backup. This had the effect of removing (hiding) the Internet Phone feature again (that feature isn't available on Orange branded n95s). I reflashed the phone again and didn't make the same mistake of restoring the settings. 😊 This has allowed me to keep the Internet Phone. On both occasions I had to reconnect the USB cable.

During the update .. think of it as installing windows on your pc .. recall how many times it restarts during that process.. well its pretty much the same with these firmware updates.
You're pretty safe once it gets to a screen saying "test mode"
but yeah .. in the imortal words of the guide (and Corpral Jones) DON'T PANIC!

😊

Thanks to everyone in this thread. I've manage to update the Firmware of My Vodaphone to the latest one

The Code of my phone was 0548026 (Voda South Africa?)

Changed it to Euro 1 and Updated smoothly without a Problem. All the Vodaphone restrictions are gone 😊

Nice one Red!😊

Wonder why VodaPhone / fone / com etc don't just ditch the fone/phone/com bit and call themselves VODA (mebbe its rude in some language or other)

I did my firmware update last week and since then the phone has crashed 3 times, once when browsing, once using the camera and once using the gallery and the whole phone freezes and the only way I can use it again is to remove the battery and then reboot, it never happened before the upgrade!

is it possible to update with an unlocked version of the n95? my n95 has a cingular sim card in it btw. anyone?

First - please post your product code in the Product Codes sticky - and indicate what languages you have available on your handset - where you got it / colour etc

Then ..

You need 3 bits of software installed
1. PC Suite - to back things up/restore them .. eg address books etc .. this also importantly installs drivers .. best to get the latest version from the Nokia Site.
http://europe.nokia.com/A4144905 (25Mb)

2. The NSS - Nemesis Service Suite .. to change your product code to say Euro 1 .. you can always change it back afterwards 😊
http://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/files/NSS/NSS103810.zip (5.5Mb)
I did a youtube thing for this part .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uN9eRlddfH0

3. The NSU - Nokia Software Updater .. Stand alone software
http://nds1.nokia.com/files/support/...erSetup_en.exe
(22.7Mb)

The firmware download is about 112-115Mb

Then be patient while it does the install - it does take time and does restart the phone several times - as I've pointed out on numerous occasions - DONT PANIC if the phone restarts .. several times - this is normal😊

Thanks, I successfully installed the new firmware onto my sim free N95 using NSS and NSU. A few tense moments when the pop-ups show dis/connected a few times. However, I removed my memory card but left my Virgin PAYG sim card in. When the upgrade was complete my operator was shown as T-Mobile UK. This meant that the Settings Wizard configured my settings to T-Mobile and I had to enter them manually. Is there,
1. Anyway I can configure my phone to show Virgin (I have tried removing and replacing the sim *#7370#)
2. Is it possible to remove the T-Mobile logo from a system file?

Hi all, i want to debrand my ORANGE N95 so i can update the firmware as no orange update is available also.

PS and do i need a valis sim in to update, as i am stil lwaiting for my sim to arrive.

You did not answer both of my questions lol

1: Do i select N93 or do a standard N95 update, as i read you have to select N93, dunno why?

2: Do i need a sim in the phone, as i am waiting for mine to turn up?.

No available new firmware for HK phone - Used NSS to change to Euro1
Nokia Software update crashed on my pc 3 times, but worked flawlessly on my laptop.
Gave me a warning when I was restoring data from my backup that Language changes can cause problems/loss of data, but no problems so far(Iwas using English as language setting on my phone before).

1: When downloading the Nokia Software Updater (NSU) from nokia.com select N93, as the site has not been updated to include the word N95 yet. This has nothing at all to do with your phone firmware, so don't worry.

2: Yes you do. Or at least the updater says you do (I haven't tried without).
