I sorted mine anyway by uninstalling and then reinstalling the maps and voices using the maploader. All is good. Loving the new firmware, loving the new maps app!

monica _69 wrote:yes, mine says "Nokia Maps" above the globe when starting up.

When I click "About", it says:

v1.1 wk23 b04 OpenGL OpenBit MN

hope this helps

Mine says v3.0 wk23 b01 OpenGL OpenBit MN ?????? seems strange a new version has a lower number.

Not really. Its not always the 'v' number you should go by, especially in BETA's. I would hazzard a guess, that v3.0 applies to that version of 'b01' or in other words, version 3.0 of beta 01.

Wheras, the latest is version 1.1 of beta 04 (v1.1 b04).

Incidently, mine also says:

v1.1 wk23 b04 which I understand is the latest version.

I have got a basic question to all of you.
What are the improvements of this upgrade compared to the oryginal one?
Is it really worth to upgrade?

Could anybody try to answer to those questions?
What are the improvements after upgrading Nokia Maps application?

slawmilcz wrote:Is it this version which doesn't contain a tracking feature?
Is it worth upgrading?

I have 'upgraded' to the beta version.
- The menus have changed (or rather been "re-arranged", it's minor and a question of taste).
- Yes, the tracking feature has been removed. You can't "plan a route" and still/at same time keep the gps position while trying to follow the route (it's of course still possible to have the map follow the gps position while f.i. driving but not when in "planned a route mode". This requires the Navigation service).
- There are other minor changes in viewing and key mappings. For instance can you now, when in 3d, view clouds in the skyes...
- The search capabilites seems improved. In prev version I didn't find an address on many occasions (although I knew it existed). Works better now.
- The route planner is faster (in prev version I could not plan a route from A to B on some occasions, it never finished "calculating route..."😉.

My feeling (can't confirm though) is that I get a quicker lock of position in this new beta version than with the old one. I have tested this beta both on old (11.x) and new (12.x) firmware and it's is better/faster and more reliable in getting a quick position (and yes, I have tried with both agps on/off in new firmware). For me, thats enough to say that this beta version is better (if you have bought navigation and ain't dependendt on the tracking feature of course).

My advice; back up phone memory to memory card, install beta version TO PHONE, NOT MEMORY CARD, and try it out. If not happy with the result perform a hard reset and restore backup and you'll be back where you where before the upgrade.

Thanks for your response.

In the old version I observed the following faults:
- when changing between 2D/3D, map always blinks (can rotate 180 deg.),
- when zoom in/out in 3D, the map view doesn't keep a point,
- wrong behaviour when start of navigation from non-existing street
(can find a route to one direction and change it just before driving up to this street).
Is there maybe something from these issues corrected?

RE:
"- when changing between 2D/3D, map always blinks (can rotate 180 deg.),"
=> Haven't noticed this in the new version.
"- when zoom in/out in 3D, the map view doesn't keep a point,"
=> If you with this mean that the "+" 'falls out' of the [] (square), it's still the same, maybe it's a '3d thing', don't know. It's only applicable when in 3d and not using navigation (when in navigation mode the "+" & [] is replaced by an arrow.
EDIT: The "+" does not fall out of [] when in 3d view. END EDIT.

"- wrong behaviour when start of navigation from non-existing street..."
=> Haven't tried it so can't confirm...

Hi, I have upgraded to the newest version.
It looks better for sure, I'll be testing tomorrow.
Thanks again 😊 .

=> It still exists, the view always blinks when switched from 3D to 2D or after searching a map with arrows keys and comming back to the current GPS position
(it looks like application would like to return to some default direction with north at the top for a while)

=> strange, it looks like have been corrected. I can zoom in/out the 3D view and my position is kept in the center of display correctly 😊

"- wrong behaviour when start of navigation from non-existing street..."

=>Not corrected yet. The behaviour of TomTom is much better when I start navigation from non-digitalized street.

Comments added underneath.

Mine is FUBAR! It won't close. It loads and works fine but when you close it, the phone locks up on the 'saving and closing' screen and the only option is to reboot!
It was doing this after the upgrade to v12 so I installed the update to Nokia Maps but it still does it!

EDIT: Ok, ignore this. The problem was that my access point was wrong after the upgrade so the phone was in 'limbo' trying to authenticate the connection. I got the correct settings resent to my phone and it connects fine now which means maps works closes out properly

PhreakTastic wrote:Select N93i, very little difference in firmware.

C what you mean but I would rather say that there are some significant differences in the firmware; N95 comes with a preinstalled version of N.Maps on rom as well as the fact that the firmware has specific configuration when it comes to GPS functionality.

Has anyone noticed the animated Satellite Signal meter down bottom right of the MAPS screen? A Major improvement over the old X inside a Sattleite dish icon!

I was very happy how the GPS had been improved, i.e. how fast it had become.
.... I was happy till today's morning. I don't know why, but I was waiting for a fix about 10 minutes, i.e. I got a fix in the middle of my driving to my work 😡

do not uninstall the original Nokia Maps that comes with your N95, this is the update for Nokia Maps

enjoy! :icon14:

So come on, how do we know this is a new version? I can find no way to get this download on the smart2go site just this direct link, it could be an old version, after all it does say v1 in about and the version with firmware 12 says v3.0, sorry but im just not convinced 😊

I c your point but this version was actually out for N95 on maps2go for a short period of time. But for some reason it was removed... Regarding the "v1 vs v3" issue I agree, this seems somewhat strange but this file is actually named "...1.0 update..." and when installed and checking "About" it says 'v1.1 wk23 b04' and the version on firmware 10.x/11.x/12.x is 'v3.0 wk23 b01'

=> It's probably a beta where '1.x' could be beta numbering but the build is newer... (..or I'm completely wrong and it's actually a really old 1.1 version... I guess time will tell..)

I've noticed that although I have aGPS enabled the phone doesn't seem to send or receive any data over the network (although it is connected) when looking for the satellite lock.

Yesterday I got a full lock (with 5 satellites!) in 15 seconds from stone cold! That's one hell of an improvement!
It connects for a few seconds when first opening and that seems to tell the phone which satellites to use, and it then connects to them

I get the same performance, I tested it on the walk home from the station (I've tested this with v11 and it didn't get a lock on the whole 10 minute walk) and it got a lock in about 15 seconds.

I have the network access in Maps disabled but AGPS is enabled and I checked the log afterwards and AGPS made an 11 second packet data connection at the start of the walk where it transfered 5kb, 1kb up and 4kb down.

Halon wrote:I've noticed that although I have aGPS enabled the phone doesn't seem to send or receive any data over the network (although it is connected) when looking for the satellite lock.

Each time I start it up with aGPS I get 1kb sent/4kb received. Can't see it from N.Maps though but in the log application after I've closed/exited N.Maps. This is consistent with conclusion of HoundDog.

Ahhh... I'll check that out. I was looking at the counter in Maps next to the connection icon in the bottom left of the screen.

Yeah, it's great.

3Shirts wrote:It connects for a few seconds when first opening and that seems to tell the phone which satellites to use, and it then connects to them

I believe it's the other way around though. As soon as your GPS gets a signal (but not lock) from one or several satellites and has identified them it sends the info to the aGPS server (supl.nokia.com) and it returns data of the identified satellites position so that the device does not have to wait for the full datastream from each satellite to be received (which takes minimum 24 sec for each sat).

The lock is definitely faster now, I'm very happy with it, Getting locks within like 30 seconds.

The most annoying thing about the Maps app is still present.

If you have Network access on, every time you lose reception, you get the pop up on the screen which has to be dismissed. Then if you get several, they build up on top of each other and you have to dismiss them all. Not great when you're driving!

I now just have network access off, but it would be better if they didn't use these pop ups!

I`ve did as monica_69 instructed and it is working perfect for me AFTER a restart. Installed on phonememory.
