Which smartphones would some of the best known names in the smartphone world really recommend, if they were only allowed one device and had to stick with it for an entire year? Find out here, I've been asking around....! I found the answers interesting and I hope you will too.
Read on in the full article.
Steve...frankly i cant understand why you rule out the P1...two more weeks and it will be out, and for prices the start at 450 euros...
Want to see the retail box??? Here it is:

How can you compain about ruling things out that nobody can buy yet ?
Several people are being asked what phone they would choose based on their own experiance, preferences. They could have said P1 if they wished. But they have never seen one/did not like what they have seen enough and so did not select it...
It was a what would you choose question. And they chose what they liked...

One of them actually choosed the P1 (Asri)...i was just "criticizing" Steve for "not accepting" it 😃 Of, course its not all that important, but the release is imininent, and the price is a surprise for me, and will make it a very good option on the smartphone arena
So, did you actually read the article???
Asri al-Baker must be a SE fanboi to select the P1, crippled by SonyEricsson intentionally: no call recording, blocked by hardware, no profiles, blocked by missing APIs, no alarm when the phone turned off, no HSDPA/EDGE, and a crippled half-QWERTY keyboard. The only good point is the 80MB free RAM - on the tortured old P990/M600 body with some make-up. Poor Asri.
@guesswho
actually most of the SE Pxxx phones in tha past had many of the problems you described and they still sold in big volumes. My P990 would be wonderful if it had more RAM. I do agree, however, that HSDPA would be good to have as well. The M600 keyboard is superb - a real innovation.
I suppose one problem with these kinds of surveys is that some people buy phones for their specs and technical performance, while others buy them because of how they look and feel.
Are you serious? No alarms when the device is turned off? Even my Nokia 6190 would happily turn itself on to sound an alarm (and then ask if you wanted to keep the phone on or not)! Is this true of all UIQ devices? I know people who have used SE feature phones, and I seem to recall that their alarms work when the devices are off.
I was shocked to learn previously that they have no profile support; that is basic functionality. Also, no call recording? My E61 may be limited to one minute (without buying 3rd party software), but at least it can do it. Less of a show-stopper than the other issues, but annoying to say the least.
The more I hear about SE/UIQ, the less they have to offer. Still have yet to find any other company which can build a phone comparable to a Nokia.
People were asked which phone they would most like to use for a year. The fact that you claim the P1i has umpteen features missing does not mean that it should not be the preferred phone for a particular user.
As Steve said, one size does NOT fit all. Just because someone chooses a phone that YOU believe to be a bad choice does NOT make it a bad choice, nor does it make that person wrong, unless you are arrogant enough to believe that only your choice is the right one...
Whoa people! What did I do? 😉
First and foremost, it's cool to see everybody comes and share their points accross. In my opinion, I found UIQ 3 to be more flexible and easier to use compared to any other smartphone platforms I have tried in the past 5 years or so.
I'm just a normal person who needs a powerful device for serious stuff and a little bit of entertainment while out on the road. I could choose the super-E90 if I want to but it's size doesn't fit my pockets.
Regarding P1's limitations, I believe it's been discussed somewhere before and I dont want to start another flame in here.
Suffice to say that I can live happily using my P990 (with even more flaws compared to P1) as my main communication, entertainment, and work device for a few months now and I am very sure I can live with the P1.
Fanboy or not, my choice was made based on what I need and P1 fits the bill perfectly! 😊
Asri al-Baker
Slight correction I think.
You think the P1 will fit the bill perfectly. Since you can't actually buy one yet you can't be sure 😊

I though krisse's choice of the Nokia 6120 Classic, was very interesting, she choose the smallest and cheapest smartphone while almost everyone else choose choose the most expensive in their respective market segments, nice choice krisse 😊
Yep, its true. N93 still rocks!
Heres a annual report for you already!
Ive been using an N93 for over a year (with two firmware updates) and Im still content. Quality video recording, which I use often as a teacher for rehearsals, and "instant" playback through tv is amazing. Many features like tv-out among many others were (and still are) at the head of the pack.
The best part is that students, parents and staff dont usually even notice that some presentations are running from the phone itself with help from a video projector! When compliments are given I just smile to myself and wonder how more difficult my job would be without it.
The definition of a quality product means also that it must work descretely so the focus of attention remains on the subject matter, not the equipment.
Good luck in your endeavor to find the "all purpose" phone of 2008. AAS is a great site. Thanks for the insight on smartphones.
I can wait until summer-autumn 2008 before looking.
