Is it acceptable to go on about 3rd party products here?
Omar
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I have been out of the country on various conferences and meetings etc.
The sms remaining field you are referring to on the members section is a number field. It has to contain a number. As this is a limited offer we didnt want to go changing fields etc so we just set a number. The number will go down as you use them but will just keep on going and will always allow you to send.
Sorry for the delay in sms messages. We had an issue with our sms provider as this we do with a 3rd party. This supplier has now been changed and you should see a more reliable and timely service.
If you have any problems, give customer services a call.
How are you getting along with the product in general?
We should have our walkie talkie service out soon. We made some headlines this week with our 1st trans atlantic voice over IP call on GPRS.
This will essentially allow you to use instant messenger type features with voice instead of text.
How does fastext differ from IM+ (http://www.shapeservices.de/eng/im/index.php) if you simply look at the instant messaging side of Fastext?
IM+ is an interface to a range of PC based IM services. If you dont have a PC based account you cant use IM on your phone. It is also limited to the services that each of these providers offer. For example the maximum amount of people that you can include on a chat is about 3 with some of these.
Fastxt works in a slightly different way in that it is completely independant of a fixed line IM service. You dont even need a PC to use fastxt. We also allow greater features, ie you can include over 250 people on a single chat. We have a store and forward facility so offline users can still send or receive messages when they log on again if they go offline or switch their phone off. Increased character limits for extra long messages. You can send messages to more that one PC client at a time. It integrates with sms and we will be bringing out other services soon such as voice based instant messaging, pictures, email, games etc.
All of this also independant of fixed line IMs and mobile operators and their squabbling over interoperability. Why only settle for the ability to IM or communicate with users on the same network. And we are also a lot cheaper than the networks.
Just came back from the Mobile IM conference in Amsterdam. I am sure you know the benefits of sending data packets (messages) over GPRS. It costs next to nothing. A 1000 character message should cost you around 0.2p to send, dependant on the network.
All UK operators plan to charge the same amount for mobile IM messages as they are for sms. They will be charging you 10p per message. Even more if you use presence notification services and even more if you send to a group.
I am sure you can all work out how much money they will make out of you for these services.
