iPhone vs N95 video on BBC website

82 replies · 22,905 views · Started 09 November 2007

Hehe, I've just seen the BBC website and there on the front of their News page is the comparison video.....

And it is shite. What retard can't write a simple text! The only real test is to get both of them to text an independant third party (using the same network) and see which gets through first.

For the love of god, why do people still insist on comparing the iPhone to the N95? 😡

Because apple did.

They call it a smartphone, and they insist its got lots of features.

Its been said before, if it was marketed as a simple phone with groundbreaking UI, it might garner more respect.

But St Steve of Cappuchino reckons its a smartphone, so it really should get grief as its being marketed as something its not.

Steve Jobs must be a very stupid man then!

Compare the iPhone to any of the SonyEricsson walkman range of phones. That'd make more sense.

But against one of Nokia's current flagship phones? I don't think so

Agreed. My boss got one when he was over at our US office and I had a play with it and while it is really nice to use, a funky phone and works well as an ipod too it is nothing like a smartphone. If they had advertised it as a cutting edge style-phone they'd be on the right lines.
The fact is, what it does, it does very well, but it hardly does anything when you start comparing it to the N95.

But at the end of the day, businessmen, gadget lovers and people who genuinely want a convergent device will do the small amount of research to realise it doesn't do what they want and make the sensible choice. The iPhone will sell to fashion victims, Apple fanboys and the techno-ignorant

True, and rather funny when you consider it.

Whats going to make someone go 'wow'?

Seeing they have an iphone, or seeing a phone plugged into a TV playing a game on the phone using the phone like a wiimote?

Now that is cool shit.

You need to see what the gadget show said about it. they really slammed it.

Texting is difficult, there is only a low res camera and it wont take videos. beyond that it's ok.

Typical apple, take 4 year old technology put it in a pretty wrapper and everybody goes mad. (see ipod, Apple mac and just about every thing else)

Yeah I carry this note around with me on my phone to show anyone who says anything positive about the iphone. Some of them are comparison to the N95 but most are bad compared to any smartphone!

Things the iPhone can't do:

No MMS.
No video recording.
No 3G.
No custom ringtones or SMS alert tones and the default ringtones are awful!
No instant messaging.
Lacks tactile keys which makes texting horrible.
No memory expansion.
No games.
No speed dialing.
No installable software.
Battery can only be replaced by sending the whole phone away.
No voice dialing.
The camera is only 2megapixel, has no autofocus and no flash.
No cut/copy/paste.
No A2DP (for bluetooth stereo/headphone output).
No GPS.
No document viewing, let alone editing.
No flash support for the web browser.
No file browser.
Visual voicemail laggy and slow.
Only takes iPod cable which is non-standard and prone to breakage.
No TV output.
Web browser is slow, even over WLAN.
Can't type anything in landscape mode.
Only one picture at a time in email.

Oh, you can get custom ringtones. It's about as enjoyable as having teeth pulled.. you have to own the song on iTunes - so even if you have it on CD, you have to buy it there. Then you have to pay again to get a ringtone, and not every song is enabled for that - then after you do, you have to manually crop the song to generate a ringtone and transfer it. If you discover that you didn't like that crop once you get it on the phone, tough luck, you have to pay again if you want another try.

It's also rather annoying that the iPhone tends to get credit for its wonderful Google Maps, a program now available in a native Symbian version that will also tell you where you are using the GPS and so surpasses the iPhone version. Unfortunately the comparisons are always between the iPhone and N95 out-of-the-box; the N95 still wins on features, but with third-party applications it moves even further out in front.

Jesus, they really like to make a simple task next to impossible in order to squeeze the last few pence out of their hapless customers don't they!

i love the design of the iphone, i wish i could have all the specs of the n95 and more all rolled into the iphone design love the touch screen

zxon wrote:For the love of god, why do people still insist on comparing the iPhone to the N95? 😡

I'd agree this is ridiculous. But the ignorant media seem obsessed with doing so.

I saw the comparison feature on the Gadget Show last week and it seemed like the presenters were skimming over some of the N95's capabilities just to level the playing field and not give the iPhone too much of an embarrassing trouncing.

I just saw someone from Apple talking about the iPhone on BBC News 24. He says that there has never been a phone which can do so much. Surely this sort of blatant lying is not legal?

Heh - interesting list 3 shirts...

At the end of the day direct comparisons are a bit meaningless when there such a difference in capability. The iPhone has a wow factor, in part, because it has a short capability list. Its therefore a lot easier to build a compelling UI. Fairplay thought the touch stuff is interesting.

That said if you want an iPhone for the errrr. fashion qualities... then follow Rafe's guide:

1. Buy a Nokia N95 8GB (you'll get a lot more for your money)
2. If you're still not cool enough. Buy an iPod Touch.
3. Look in your wallet and you'll find you have more money that if you had bought an iPhone.... (this assumes you get a contract of similar types).

Note: The people who care you've got an iPhone probably can't tell the difference between an iPhone and iPod Touch. They're both shiny.

😉

Wow! Great list 3shirts. I'm putting it on my phone now, as peeps at work seem convinced the iPhone is better than sliced bread.

The iPhone's Web browser being the best thing ever is also somewhat amusing against the N95 - both are based on WebKit, and although the iPhone's can zoom with gestures, the N95's supports Flash, so things are balanced out somewhat. Nevertheless, the iPhone is heralded as being the first time a phone has had a proper web browser rather than the 'mobile web', something which is obviously untrue when Nokia phones have already been doing that.

And don't forget that Opera has allowed java-enabled phones to do this for over a year...
This is funny: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MwrE5UCUf7s

Ive gone from the N95 to the iPhone and im not going back. A couple things on your list have since changed thought i would point some out.

Not having a go, just i think the iPhone gets a lot of bad press and having had both phones and don't get me wrong the N95 is still one of the best phones out there. Ive got my MRS the 8GB N95 she prefers it to the iPhone, just thought id fight apples corner...

No MMS. (True but then isnt email better and cheaper?)
No video recording. (Yes this is stupid!)
No 3G. (Yes this is stupid apparently due to battery life? Then again i dont get 3G here so doesn't effect me)
No custom ringtones or SMS alert tones and the default ringtones are awful! (You can now have Custom Ringtones)
No instant messaging. (There are now IM messaging apps)
Lacks tactile keys which makes texting horrible. (Texting is far easier on the iPhone its so quick to get used to the keyboard)
No memory expansion. (Maybe not but im a heavy user and 8GB is fine for the mo) 16GB will be a good upgrade next year tho)
No games. (I have hundreds of games, most on the NES emulator and a couple on the new Game Boy Advanced Emulator. Also many other apps available lights off and many more addictive games)
No speed dialing. (We have a favourites page for dialling)
No installable software. (Again we can make apps and install them)
Battery can only be replaced by sending the whole phone away. (It can be a DIY job its a simple solder)
No voice dialing. (True)
The camera is only 2megapixel, has no autofocus and no flash. (True and the camera is rubbish but itll do)
No cut/copy/paste. (True should be in an Update soon)
No A2DP (for bluetooth stereo/headphone output). (True however there is a hack to have music via Bluetooth but i havnt tried it, this should have been something from factory to be honest)
No GPS. (True again there is a Program uses WIFI and GSM aerials to triangulate your position like A-GPS not very good if im honest but you also have Google Maps with driving directions)
No document viewing, let alone editing. (There is a Doc viewer editor isnt far behind)
No flash support for the web browser. (True again stupid and annoying IMO)
No file browser. (We have a file browser much like Ybrowser)
Visual voicemail laggy and slow. (Cant comment my voicemail is normal vodafone voicemail i cant have visual)
Only takes iPod cable which is non-standard and prone to breakage. (Not sure what your saying here?)
No TV output. (We now have TV out)
Web browser is slow, even over WLAN. (Very untrue Saffari is 1000000 times better than any browser Nokia have come up with)
Can't type anything in landscape mode. (Again untrue)
Only one picture at a time in email. (We have an app to now send full size multi pictures)

Its a winner for me! The N95 has gone... True about the camera but then i have a wicked Sony cam for pictures. The N95s web browser and Music player isn't very good in comparison.

A fault not on your list tho!

Loud speaker!!! They might have well not bothered!! lol Its rubbish on the iphone, the N95 on half volume is far better still but then im not one to blast my music out in public, i use my headphones. Still would like the option!

Just my 2p! :icon14:

Thanks for pointing out the changes but as far as I am concerned the points that still stand are pretty major.
A few other points. The games are only web based and cool though NES games are, they are nearly 20 years old! Native games and apps are far superior, just look at something like system rush!
The battery replacement is a hack job and will void the warranty.
Custom ringtones require you to buy the track through itunes (even if you already have it on cd etc)
And, no, email isn't better than MMS if I want a picture to go straight to my mates who all have MMS but almost none have mobile email.

Don't get me wrong the iphone is fine at what it does, but it isn't a smartphone

The Apps are native... I have never even tried the web apps. The Nes emulator is amazing! On-screen touch controller. I've got literally hundreds of NES games all on the phone.

http://www.zdziarski.com/projects/nesapp/

Also i have custom ringtones from my personal MP3 folder uploaded to the phone by myself without itunes, you can do it through iTunes but your right you have to pay for them.

About it not being a Smart phone again i disagree its very smart and the possibility's are endless!

If the battery is finished before the year is up ill be sending it back for replacement under warranty. After the years up removing the back to replace battery wont affect warranty because you wont have any...

(True but then isnt email better and cheaper?)

Only if your on a dataplan. Bit arrogant of apple to automatically assume everyone that ever gets an iphone will be on one.

No 3G. (Yes this is stupid apparently due to battery life? Then again i dont get 3G here so doesn't effect me)
Yes but thats still a very poor excuse. Being touted as a phone thats good for internet not having 3G is very poor.

No speed dialing. (We have a favourites page for dialling)

A 'page'? Thats nowhere near as fast as speed dialling. And while thats a moot point, its one brought up by apple fans many times 'this only takes one press etc etc'.

Battery can only be replaced by sending the whole phone away. (It can be a DIY job its a simple solder)

Errrrm!!!

The camera is only 2megapixel, has no autofocus and no flash. (True and the camera is rubbish but itll do)

But for many, it just wont do. Myself, I cant see the point of putting a camera on there. As its touted as a groundbreaking phone (only by fanboys and apple), then why not use a little effort to make the camera half decent? Its easily done.

No GPS. (True again there is a Program uses WIFI and GSM aerials to triangulate your position like A-GPS not very good if im honest but you also have Google Maps with driving directions)

Not really good enough to travel by tbh, Ive tried that and its pants. Wifi comment is irrelivant as if your traveling the likelyhood of staying within range of wifi is practically 0.

No cut/copy/paste. (True should be in an Update soon)
Sorry, seen too many apple fans say 'its coming soon' about everything. I only count whats on the phone.

Web browser is slow, even over WLAN. (Very untrue Saffari is 1000000 times better than any browser Nokia have come up with)

Fair enough, your opinion, but the '10000000' makes you sound like a fanboy.

In all, Im glad you like the iphone. Thats all that matters in the end, that your happy with what you got.

I feel some of the points needed addressing though 😉

I've not got an iPhone so these are just observations. I love the look of it and the way in which it operates is very clever BUT:

1. Is it worth about £170 more than the N95 and an 18 month contract?
2. Why has such a good device got such a poor camera? I had 2MP about 3 years ago. I want to move forwards, not backwards.
3. No video, mainly down to the poor camera.
4. No 3G! You say it's down to poor battery life yet the N95 has been slated for having poor battery life but we still have 3G.

The other points made wouldn't really make much difference to my daily use so if I were going to get an iPhone the above points are things that would put me off.

That's why I have an N95 and am very happy with it (especially now that it's a light sabre too!!). 😊

Sorry, to me at least you are sounding more like a fanboy.

Its NOT a smartphone, too many features are missing.

And if you send it off to get a battery replaced...how long do you have to wait without this really expensive phone?

Oh no!!!! Your the second person to say that to me i think i should stop and see whats going on! lol i used to be and apple hater! Now i have a Mac and the iPhone!

Your right tho certainly things need sorting out then again its also apples first phone... Shall have to see what happens in the future! Ill always be a nokia fan!

And again!! 😮 lol

To be honest i wont have the phone by the time the battery has its last legs not many keep phones for longer than a year.

Yeah i wouldn't sign up for the 18 months. Mine is unlocked using my Vodafone 12 month contract.
