Free unlimted GPRS access on Orange!

Yes its true! I returned a couple of weeks ago from a weeks skiing in Austria. Before I set off I called orange to ask what the GPRS costs for use in Austria were.

They told me it would be free, as they had no billing agreements set up with many european operators, and as a result would have no idea how much data I would be using.

Now lets just put this in perspective...
My UK gprs costs are 8/meg. In my 2 months with gprs i've used about 1 meg total.

In one week in Austria I used about 9 meg, surfing with webviewer, using tipic to chat with my unfortunate friends back home D and as a modem linked to a friends laptop.

This should have cost me about 70, and I was bracing myself for a bill until this morning when it arrived. Sure enough, there was no mention of the charges. The roaming charges for GPRS where it is charged is about 20 per meg!! so in fact I saved myself 180 and had a lot of fun in the meantime.

So, I recommend that when you all go abroad, call your operators and find out the charges for using the GPRS abroad. Chances are it may be free, and using GPRS on the 7650 is when it really comes into its own.

Enjoy

Be careful, when you are roaming it can sometimes take two or three months of bills for the charges to appear (it takes a while to get the info between the networks, etc), so I'd put that money someehwere safe till April gathering interest - then go crazy 😉

Thanks, and yet, if they told me it was free and then they charge me, I'll go ballistic at them!

Omar,

You're probably right, it wont be for long. Although I think as many people should take advantage of such opportunities as possible.

Orange aren't the only ones who have these sorts of problems. A friend who works in network development at Vodafone was telling me that MMS messaging is currently free on Voda because they have no billing system that can work out the difference between usual gprs data traffic and an mms message. As a result they just had to make the messaging free, and it will be until they have the required systems in place.

D'oh

Just re-read your last posting. Are you suggesting i'll get screwed with a huge bill too?

Omar,

Deep down inside that is what I was hoping you meant, but I didnt dare to dream it.

Do you have any idea how much prices are expected to be??

Orange GPRS charges from the 1st Feb:

Non bundled GPRS 3/MB

Lower Bundles....
GPRS1 for 2
GPRS2 for 4
GPRS4 for 8
If you use more than your bundle, it costs 3/MB

Higher Bundles....
GPRS7 for 15
GPRS15 for 25
GPRS30 for 40
If you use more than your bundle, it costs 1.50 /MB

Mmm, this all sounds excellent but does this mean they'll automatically upgrade me to the new tariffs, or will i continue to be signed up to the crappy 4 for 0.5Mb?

Do I just call orange up on the 1st Feb and ask them to change my gprs tariff?

😃

BTW, I *think* you'll stay on your current GPRS plan until you ring and request otherwise.

Everyone will be migrated to the new plans on the 1st Feb. Wouldnt hurt to ring them up, to see what you've been moved onto.

No you won't. All users will be moved by May 1st. If you want moving sooner, call 156.

are any of the other UK providers going to follow suit?? If so when and is there any info on how much they will be charging on their new tariffs??

cheers guys
