Hardened Nokia N95 'classic' fan Andrew Galpin has just spent a week with the black, 2.8" screened 8GB version. What were his impressions and conclusions? Like me, the acknowledgement of the bigger screen, the quadrupled free RAM and the bigger battery were tempered with as many reasons why the 'classic' N95 still holds the edge.
Read on in the full article.
Is that N95-1 running a pre-v20 firmware? If so, facepalm
Nice comparison of user who used both devices for an extended period. I still prefer my lovely 8GB model, with the flush screen,though...:icon14:
I would just like to point out that to the average Joe,8GB of storage should be sufficient for a period of time, not everyone will require a 16GB card. Also with regards to the slow USB transfer rate,it can be annoying at times but again depends on how often you are going to dump large media files on your device.
And lastly just to point out that according to the Forum Nokia site the N95 8GB,along with the N82,have around 90mb free RAM on boot.I always get just under 90mb free,(around 89.5mb),thats with all my apps installed.
Andrew's N95 was running v21 firmware, apparently 8-)
Steve
Once again the n82 looks like the most appealing of the n-series, even when it's not mentioned!
oh, just that the folder layout in the menu is very pre-v21 like on the pic
I was under the impression the resolutin of the screen was unchanged? If so how can the screen display 'more'. Bigger yes, more no.
One of the things that I miss from my old N80 is the extra resolution that it offered especially when browsing.
@fernando: Oh, the pic is pasted from my original N95 8GB comparison, many months ago - Andrew didn't fancy himself as a photographer 8-)
I've asked Andrew to pipe up here with a comment or two....
Thanks Steve, and yes just to confirm both devices were running the latest updates 😉
Andy
If I was buying one of those two for the first time then I would go for the 8GB, but as I already have a classic I don't feel the 8GB is enough of an improvement to upgrade. N82 is the wrong shape and has too small a screen for me.
Waiting patiently for some N96 reviews.
"I was under the impression the resolutin of the screen was unchanged? If so how can the screen display 'more'. Bigger yes, more no. "
There is something weird about the N95-8gb resolution because it can fit 7 app icons across the top on the home screen, whereas the N95 only fits 6.
This would make you think it has higher resolution, but its rated 320x240 like the N95.

There are less pixels on the N95-2 LCD than there are on the N95-1. You would think being a bigger screen it would have more, but it has less.
The author says that he'd "argue that in many other ways the classic is still better," but all he does is explain why the 8GB version is better than the classic one. Where's the comparison?
let's have a 8gb owner with the classic n95 for a week!
i as an 8gb owner, dont think i'd be able to stand it...
screen looks smaller, opening the lens cover takes another step
not enough ram, battery doesnt last as long..and last but not least, black looks better =)
cheers~ =P
On the classic opening the lens cover automatically sets the phone into camera mode so there is no extra step.
There is less memory but with V20 firmware and higher it's barely noticeable.
I don't understand the whole battery complaint thing. Mine lasts 48 hours no problem. I think anyone who gets less than that must be holding wifi and or bluetooth or 3G connections unnecessarily or something. Or leaving active apps open unnecessarily.
Yes the bigger screen is an advantage and a big count against the N82, but on its own not enough reason to upgrade from classic.
I really don't like the fact that the N95 8GB doesn't have a removable memory card. I swap memory cards between various readers to get photos off, movies and songs on etc. With the N95 8GB it all has to go up USB? Screw that idea. I'll keep my classic and my 12GB card thanks.
This great TOP-STORY made me laugh 😊) Very competent and usefull for preteens. Keep inviting dumb "editors" Steve ! That's the way !
It's not enough reason to upgrade to 8gb from classic..
yes, but as for me, i didn't buy classic and waited for something better..
and when i got my hand on 8gb, i pity people who are using classic =P
Dear all,
I bought my N95 Classic knowing full well what it's specification was prior to purchasing. In fairness to the N95 classic it does everything it says on the tin!
It is inevitable that better models will superceed the N95 Classic/8GB and I very much look forward to seeing their advancement over the coming years.
In my honest opinion, both the Classic and 8GB models are equal in terms of their usefulness to the user. It's more about personal preference, and how one chooses to use the phone that's different.
Anyway - enjoy your chosen weapon! Long may it serve you well!
Leigh.
What type of rubbish article is this?
This website used ot be good. Now it doesnt keep up with goings on and just regurgitates jokes like this.
Why dont we all just have the standard N95 and never buy another phone again.
Definately going Iphone in the Summer to get away form this idiocy. I want good phones not out of date rubbish that chugs and crashes whilst losing any software support. Looking at this website nowadays makes you think symbian are dead.

Eh? Leaving aside your trolling, I agree with Andrew, actually. The Nokia N95 classic with v21 firmware is still, if crystal clear photos and microSD flexibility are important to you, the best smartphone in the world, fighting off ALL competition.
No worries about going to the iPhone, though you'll still find me in that world too, on http://www.allaboutiphone.net 8-)
And I simply do NOT understand how you can think that AAS gives the impression that Symbian is dead....
Symbian for the Win~!
i love symbian! it's always the easiest and most friendly used OS!
I owned an 8gb N95 (having previously owned a classic) then went BACK to a classic and in my opinion the classic is the better phone because of the way I use it.
The extra screen size makes no odds to me since it merely adds to the size and does not offer any more true screen real-estate. The extra RAM, while a nice feature, is an unnecessary extra for my usage pattern: all applications work just as well on the classic as on the 8gb model since most Symbian applications are designed with the N95 classic as a testing device - it is after all the most popular Symbian phone on the market - and so all the extra RAM really means is that you can have lots of applications running at once. I'm ADDICTED to closing applications down that are running in the background , not to save RAM but to save battery.
What counts for me is the hot-swappable card facility of the N95 classic. The sluggish transfer rate of the 8gb model is a real killer for me and the way I use my Nokia, and with the N95 8gb I wasn't able to hot-swap the memory card from My Exilim digital camera to send the pictures from it by MMS - it needed a pc all the way. With the classic I just pop the micro SD from the sd adaptor, into my N95 and away I go.
The slightly bigger screen and generous-but-pointless (for me) RAM of the 8gb N95 is not, to my mind, a reason to spend such a huge amount extra on the model, given its critical disadvantages.
I'm not a jealous classic fanboy - with the 8gb I've been there, done that and could afford one if I wanted one again, but I'm happy with what I've got now until a genuine upgrade comes along - one with no-tradeoffs
