The Nokia E90 gets its update - officially

Nokia finally released their next-gen software update for the E90 Communicator, available now for unlocked devices on Nokia Software Update. The new version is v210.34.75 and I'll be investigating it during the day if I can persuade Windows Vista to work with NSU... Comments welcome.

Read on in the full article.

Nice one, would like to know if nsu works with vista 😞

you can launch NSU using the compatibility mode, like steve said.
i'm having a problem with my update, i had sort of a crash with a nokia process in the background and i quite sure the update has stopped, although NSU is still running.

i can't close it, but i will have to restart it all, hope my phone isn't that affected !!

AZERTY devices (product code 0544354) still have to wait. Too bad, as I am going to spend one month in Africa with a very poor connection, not willing to take a chance in trying an update that is likely to be aborted in the middle of a critical phase.

If you get the process error under Vista, you have to kill NSU from Windows Task Manager and then restart it - see Antony Pranata's page on this.

I'm wondering if NSU's recent downtime has enabled them to fix things though - we'll see!

still no update to product code 0533332, it says Version: 07.40.1.2

After having read Steve's article completely, I think it's not so bad to wait another four weeks. While in Bujumbura, I will just monitor users' experiences and comments. I guess we will finally get some kind of 08.xx firmware release.

I have learned to my surprise, that N82 was unstable in webbrowser, just after installation of couple of programs and my "favourite" theme. It would often close for apparently no reason, more often when in "menu" mode. despite tons of free RAM, etc. So, I started to roll back installed programs until I found a culprit. This was something I would expect the last - a theme! It is hard to believe, I thought that a theme is just a collection of pics and colour definitions, but it seems that SVG theme from Pizero, can cause such a strange instability in N82 browaser (in my case that was SVG theme "New Gold default icons" by PiZero). I doubt it has anything to do with theme itself, more likely some bug in SVG theme rendering engine in firmware.

Steve,

Is the new firmware more unstable than 200.34.72? I currently have that and I'm going to hard reset my phone anyway... Any particular reason not to upgrade from 200.34.72 to 210.34.75?

=)juha

Does anyone else have an E90 model 0555562? Whilst this was purchased SIM free from Play.com and is recognised by the Nokia Update service as an E90, I cannot find any reference to this product code, nor any indication when I can upgrade from v7.40.1.2. The phone reports as an RA-6 Nokia E90 (44). All comments welcome.

Managed to update to the latest FW; but can't remember the product I used! NSS has stopped working. I suspect I used code 0544294 (UK. Mocha). E90 seems very snappy now and restore seemed to work from x.x.73.

Hi all,

Well i was running V200.34.73 using an APAC code and although on checking 0533332 which is the UK Mocha Generic code it said no update was available. I changed my code back anyway and running NUS in Windows XP SP2 comparability it did in fact upgrade with no problems.

I also have to agree with the other poster as using a PiZero theme i was having slight screen flashes and the getting kicked out of the Web browser problem. Since going back to a Nokia theme both of these problems stopped.

Maybe those having problems should chose one of the installed default themes and see if it also makes a difference or not.

It's only been a few hours now since i flashed and reinstalled all my apps and synched with Outlook but it seems even quicker than with the previous Firmware and so far no problems at all, it all seems good to me lets hope it stays that way.

Marc

Hi Guys,

Can anybody tell me how to hard reset my E90? One of the previous updates corrupted it and now the keyboard is disconfigured and not recognizing carachters on it even after upgrading to v210.34.75. Hence would like to hard reset and do a fresh install. It's a Spanish version keyboard.

Thanks

Perhaps your performance gains come from clearing up memory while reflashing the device. My E90 becomes slower and slower as it is used more and acquires more data. The camera is ridiculously slow. I am begging Canon to turn one of their cameras into a Linux phone because as great as Nokia is, the camera is too slow.

Still no Linux kernel, no GNU utilities, no ext2 filesystem, so the device remains a real clunker for offline browsing of mirrored web sites. (The cost of surfing online with the slowest available GPRS using prepaid is still at a level that only a Saudi prince can afford so offline browsing is the only option on this device)

HTC has a 400MHz clamshell slider that looks competitive but the Winblows Mobile 6 software is even worse than S60.

It would be easier to carry around a much bigger device than to have to carry around an E90 and an N810 and a Canon but at least the N810 lets you format cards as ext2 which is essential for large web site mirroring. Using text based browsers and BASH shell is an excellent solution to the slow processor speed. They waste valuable keyboard space with an inefficient D-pad. Busybox is a poor substitute for the full software with complete man pages but usually it is easy to apt-get the original programs.

The Nokia N810 is the best device Nokia has ever produced. Billions of these devices should be distributed to children in the third world so that they learn Linux, lest they grow up stupid and think the way to wealth is by looting and stealing and invading.

@Pythonista

my E90 performance with 210.x.75 is better than under 200.x.73 wich itself was better than that with 7.40 etc.

Just updated mine, product code 0533332.

I wonder if it got UDP, and if we'll ever see another update to find out?

No UDP in this release, at least, my E90 was wiped clean.

And the web instability is nothing to do with themes, IMHO, as I was getting crashes with the default E90 theme from Nokia.

Steve

Steve, is there any chance you're suffering from the fact you've got a prototype?

I'm never sure what the difference is between Nokia's proto and production models, is it just the firmware or do they alter the hardware before it hits the factory?

I've done some pretty extensive tests this afternoon and I'm 99% sure that what I'm seeing is a bug in the Flash Lite 3 implementation. Web is fine for general sites, other apps are fine, even when all running at once (so it's not a RAM chip issue) - yet try and play Flash video and Web simply exits/disappears. Very wierd. Not a huge problem, but worrying, to say the least.

I've just successfully updated my phone, but now I've found that some fo my apps (Best Safe and Crypto) are

a. not present after restoring from a backup made just before updating

and

b. refuse to install from the downloaded .sisx files (expired certificate error).

Does anyone know why this has happened and how to sort it out?

Cheers, Ian.

b. refuse to install from the downloaded .sisx files (expired certificate error).

This is solved by cranking the date back on the phone, so that the certificate is within date (they used to only last a year).

In other news, I'm seeing a bug with Web, where the Wlan remains active after I quit everything and stop wlan scan. Web won't then work, since it can't reconnect the wlan. A quick off-on solves this, but it is annoying.

Hi,

I am still on 7.4. I really want to upgrade to the latest firmware. Is NSS not working anymore?

If it works what product code should I use. I had already chaned my product code last time to 053332 to get the 7.4 upgrade.I am in the UK.

That's why I'm still on my 200.34.73 firmware. It has been stable for me and based on the posts I'm reading, the new FW doesn't look so stable.

I had tried this, but kept getting another error. Anyway, I set the date to the date that I received the email with my reg. code, and this worked. However, now that I can start Best Safe, all of my laboriously entered password data has gone missing. I'm going to email the producers of this app, but I am amazed/disappointed/stunned that a full backup and restore appears to be nothing of the sort. How can various apps (Best Safe, Crypto, Cute Keys and even Nokia Maps) simply disappear after the resore??

I must admit that this is my first Nokia FW upgrade, and I only ever did one upgrade with my P910i, so maybe this sort of thing is not unknown to those with more experience, but I would have expected that following the upgrade instructions to the letter would have given me a phone with new FW and ALL of my apps and data as they had been...

Ian.

Biggest change for me is that Web does not render the pages twice anymore!!!!

I have the version 07.41... but I will wait till a global update will be released, someone has any idea when? I don't like to change my product code.

Can you please provide a list or a link to a list specifying this boat load of bug fixes and tweaks, thank you.

Accuracy in terms of "boat load" doesnt help anyone in any way.
