v30 for the N95 8GB?

Yes you will lose data / apps. You can back up using PC Suite or to the memory card.

However Nokia are moving (gradually) to a system (UDP = user data preservation) which avoids this problem. A lot of the newer devices (FP2) have this and some of the older ones too (not the N95 though).

weird, N-Gage is installed yes, but on drive C:. it's not on rom, lol

N-Gage comes installed in drive C, not in rom, weird...

And when you uninstall it, there is a Games icon left in the menu, what I suppose is the demo app leftovers.

And the menu icon showing up is annoying, there probably will be a v31 soon

first UDP device N82... not sure if the new models have it, but I can vouch for my phone (N82). I updated my firmware back in april and all my data was preserved, contacts, texts, mail setup, apps... everything. I knew about UDP, but still... quite a pleasent surprise.

Which device has been CRIPPLED by not receiving a firmware update?

If a firmware version contains bugs bad enough to stop the device from working properly then you can get your money back from the retailer under most countries' consumer laws.

It's your responsibility to make sure that the device does what you want it to do when you buy it.

You shouldn't be buying anything you know is faulty on the assumption that it will be fixed later, because that takes away any financial incentive for the manufacturer to fix things.

Manufacturers don't get any money for doing firmware updates, in fact it costs them money to do them. The only thing manufacturers get money from is a hardware sale, so you've got to use that hardware sale to influence them.

If you buy something broken knowing that it doesn't work properly, then you've only got yourself to blame if it stays broken.

What?!?!

- Most Computers and phones are sold in a part working state. Consumers have come to accept this and therefore rely on updates. Windows operating systems really set the trend on this.

- Alot of software updates directly allow the manufacturer to make more money they do not just loose the manufacturer money. For example N-Gage, Maps, Apple's App Store.... Making this software available and working means they sell more software through these portals. Indiretly manufacturers also benefit - add more features make the unit work better sell more units.

Nokia acts in an appauling way towards its customers. Why update the N95 and not the N93 or the N82? Microsoft states how long they will continue to update and support a particular product and Nokia should do the same.

Yeah, I agree with rottie. Without the new method of retaining settings (can't remember the name) I don't think I'll be doing this one. I've already got the latest versions of the updated apps and I don't really see any other benefits that would make it worth the trouble. I suppose it's a sign that the device's functionality and stability has plateaued. The improvements that for me would make it worthwhile, like better PIM apps and decent AP handling, just aren't there.

@rottie, many phones these days have UDP, your data stays intact even after a firmware update..

And guys, any news on the new N82 firmware??? When do they plan to activate the Navi Wheel on the N82?

Actually, the 6110N has UDP. 😉

Nokia have started to add OTA Updates to newer devices. This downloads the update and applies it without needed a backup/restore and without the need for a PC.

Yes entirely possible some bugs can not be fixed by firmware. I can't think of any instances where I know this to be the case off hand, but there's always going to be fundamental limitations.

I've gone through all the n95's firmwares, this one gave me a lot of grief. update went fine, but restoring my content didn't work, there was something in my settings that bricked the phone, and I needed to do a 3+answer+#-formatting a couple of times, until I gave up, and didn't restore my settings, only my calendar and messages...

* Share online -program has no services, it connects to the internet, but no services found. Alas, I've used this to upload photos to flickr. What, now, wait until another firmware update?
* My Ngage-installation disappeared
* No Ovi-services in sight

Also, I'm really disappointed with the new Maps software, it's soo much slower than the version 1. Also, it creates an 3G data connection even though instructed to connect via wifi. Apparently it does not support a wifi connection any more...

Updated. Sorry to see no improvements in auto-unlocking the phone when inserting cables. Using it on my desktop is still clumsy (since there's no dock, and the phone often asks for unlock even though it knows it's not in the pocket).

Resolved these problems by re-installing the firmware update without the memory card. Hope this helps, if someone has similar problems.

Anyone know if Nokia finally fixed the call log bug? (where every call in the call log shows a mobile icon)

NeilH, rottie... theres an app called AutoSisInstaller you could use after a fw update... info here, tho you need the .sis files...

"Why can't it be like with Windows updates - Download, install, restart - DONE?"

Apparently it will be like that with the new N82

You say that reinstalling without the memory card fixed these problems - does that extend to the maps and wi-fi point? Has anyone else found this?

I installed that latest firmware on my N95 and changed that screen rotation to Automatic. Phone froze and kept on restarting! As soon as start screen was on, restart again! Only way was to hard reset (asterisk+green button+3) and then turn it off! What a bug! Also Windows Live Messenger is not working anymore.

when i updated my firmware my music player icon changed and it was renamed to just music, but when i restored my data from my memory card it renamed my music icon back to the old version saying music player.
How do i get the newer version that is named music and the newer icon?

Hello, I found this firmware (v.30) to have quite a few bugs. I'm getting that "no gateway reply" with Wlan, which i didn't have before and tried fixing it by setting powersave function to off but doesn't work. I can't get access to any WLAN, always keep getting back same reply "no gateway access" HELP !

Hmmm... my nokia software updater detected that the 20.0.0.15 is the latest firmware version..

How to download the 30 version @_@ ?

Need help down here...

You can wait until it is available for your country/region (or your network operator, if you have an operator customized version).
