Guest contributor Nick Anstee signed up to be one of the first to get a Nokia N96, as part of a limited 'wildlife' run. Read on for his first impressions of the N96, after a couple of days of intensive playing, plus photos of the device and some really nice photo samples taken on the device.

Nice! so the 950mah battery life isn't as bad as the N95 one then?
probably bcoz of the FP2 doesn't drain as much battery power than the FP1?
so the device really is fingerprint magnet? compare to N95 8gb, is it much worse? thanks
That's what I like to see - quality dog photo sample shots. Echo most definitely approves. Thanks Nick.
and the whole thing is a fingerprint magnet.
Please, PLEASE... this goes out to all manufacturers: stop making glossy black devices!
There is no way to use something that's glossy and black without covering it in finger prints, and while it might look nice in the publicity photos it looks increasingly bad in real life.
What's wrong with matt finishes and/or light colours? Where did this idea come from that everything has to be shiny and dark?

You can actually see the person taking the photos reflected in the dog's eye in the first photo, which is rather cool.
Thanks Nick. Your doggy is really cute too ! What's his specie ?
The N96 sounds like a great device. In particular the good news on the battery (against all the b***hing and moaning before hand by "experts" in various blogs).
Wow, we must be a sensitive lot, I've never seen 'bashing' starred out before!!
Have you noticed that 3D Graphics HW Accelerator is now listed on forum.nokia's N96 spec list? http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/N96
This can't be true or is it?!
Look at the details of the fur on that great looking dog!
To answer the question on where the back and shiny design comes from... Dark Vader!

I think Viipottaja means "female dog"... 😊

Amazingly, there IS a Vader phone:

Steve, 😃. I was self sensoring, and unfortunately I am a low life so the letters missing are actually "itc"..
My N95 battery lasts 2-3 days of battery hungry activity so what's good about 1 day?
Are you sure? What's your heavy use?
According to my sources, the naviscroll functionality that was shown int he N96 when it launched has since been taken out of the product.
No reason why, but you're not doing anything wrong, there just isn't any Naviscroll in N96 😞
I also get VERY good life out of my n95, but it is only about 4 or 5 month old, and it was a new 'sports' model when i got it. I don't know if it has an extended battery or not.
Did anyone else notice that the photographer can be seen in the dog's eyes on the picture where the dog looks left. Also some tree...
For some reason it reminds me of Space Odyssey 2001... 😊

the people saying that they get a few days of usage out of a n95 have no clue what heavy useage is. pretending to talk on the phone does not use nearly as much battery as actually talking on the phone....
There are no N96 samples with working navi wheel for press it seems 😞
It's not the FP2 alone that is responsible for better power management. But N96's new processor consumes less battery power than other processors like those on N95 and N81.
They really do look amazing, better than I thought but I would like to see the flash of the phone in action.
besides the stand, the new look, and the extra 8 gigs is see almost no reason to switch from my n95 8gb. The camera seems to be better but not much. i wish they would have put the soft touch on it like they did on the 8gb. The navi wheel seems like it would be a plus but i've heard too many bad things about it.
sweet dog btw
there would be a very small minority which will scream, i told you nokia would not be a fool to put in a 950 mah not for nothing! I have put n 95 8 gig to heavy use. It does not even last 12 hours. So i will refute that claim of 3 days!
But am happy i can stay with my n 82 without regret! Yes, video capabilities are better but not worth selling my current phone for 230 and getting this one for 550! But this phone is good.
The biggest problem Nokia have with the battery in the N96 now (once people have been able to test it) is that it's fighting against the bad reputation that N95 gained, and it's also fighting against comparible products from Nokia and Samsung which have bigger / better batteries. That's going to be a hard sell.
About the 3D HW accelerator, I don't think it's correct. The Nomadik chip has a number of "smart accelerators" but they are programmable SW.

Nomadik2 chip has HW accelerated 2D and 3D graphics.
I agree with all the comments above, the N95 battery (with v 21.0.0.016) lasts more than a day with heavy usage. My heavy usage definition is surfing online for 40 minutes each way on the train to / from work, while listening to music, using bluetooth headset, and having the sports tracker, GPS, rotate me and screenshot software running in the background. Some days I even have Google Map open. Every day I take roughly 10 photographs on my walk to / from work through Trafalgar Square & Leicester Square, or Haymarket, Bond Street & Piccadilly Circus. Photos are automatically uploaded using Shozu, Flickr etc. So a lot of online usage.
In the office I use my phone mostly for text & phone calls, or testing applications.
The one thing that drains the phone quicker than writing this comment, is plugging it into the PC via the USB cable. I guess that is where the N85 will rule, with it's dual USB/Power cable.
Best of all, the N95 does not have the same problem with finger smudges, since it's the plum model, with a nice silver front.
The N96 just does not have the wow factor, and I am sure Nick Anstee, given the N95 (original with latest firmware), could take some fantastic photosgraphs of his beautiful dog. I know I have.
takes nice pictures looks like North Yorkshire, is it?
forget the phone. i know i have a good enough phone, my n82, for the time being to take care of all my needs. Nick, your dog is amazing!! which breed? whats the cost of the puppy??????
He has got a royal feel around him....
yes, even i noticed the man taking the pics and the tree. I also noticed the skyscrappers in the second pic in the background!🙄
