Stuclark, while I see you point I do have to disagree a bit. The N95s have sold 10 milllion units! How can it have THAT bad a reputation on battery life? 😊 I think we are mixing reputation on blogs and sites like this, and among (some) "phone-geeks" (I don't, maybe a couple of hundred thousand people world wide) with that prevails in the "real world". 😉. Plus, with new firmware the N95 battery life is not that bad at all. Plus, 99% of people probably don't put their phones through even close to as heavy usage as for example Lookatbowen described. I know I don't.
First impressions of the Nokia N96, plus photo samples
The N96 just does not have the wow factor, and I am sure Nick Anstee, given the N95 (original with latest firmware), could take some fantastic photosgraphs of his beautiful dog. I know I have.
Does he know that you've been taking pictures of his dog...
smart move is to wait for OMAP3 devices with S60 9.5 next year.
for me its betwen the n96 and samsung i8510
both run symbian ftpack 2
samsung has 8megapixels, mini touchpad but no tv tuner and a 1200mah battery
apart from that all features are the same . what do you all think ?-
The reason for the N96's better battery management. Is not only influenced by FP2 but the fact that its proccessor runs @ 264Mhz compared to the 330/332 on the N95's and 369/370 in the latest E series and numbered S60 phones e.g. 5320. Although I must admit I'm somewhat confused and bewilderded on whether the N96 has a 3D HW Accelerator. I saw the forum link posted abouve but I don't see it on the official page. How can it be fairly smooth at functioning as a phone and handle DVB-H without a 3D HW Accelerator?
I don't feel excited about N96. It is not as exciting as N95 when it was first launched over 2 years ago.
exactly wait for omap3430 and s60 v5 with some serious Kastor UI, will definately kick the 2008 devices into history...
besides, even if the new n96 is more efficient with battery life, then why not stretch that to new limits by including a 1200 mah battery IN CONJUNCTION with the new more efficient FP2 phone? just makes no sense.
3D graphics and DVB-H don't have anything to with each other. N96 has some of the video codecs running on HW, that's why it's really good at video.
arghhh!! i just went to the nearest Nokia centre today..
and they have it! the prototype..played around with it..but hey! how come when u slide it down, the music buttons lights dont bright at all?
is it coz its the prototype one?
i live in Indonesia, and they said only 600 units of n96 comes out for now..
and moreover, i have to indent the phone to get it...
do u think i should? im using n95 8gb at the moment, i noe the differences arent too far apart..but i've fallen in love with it!
help =( plz give me ur opinion..
the pics look good. But how about pics and detail info about email and web browsing
I had the n95 with the DOS style email. Is it finally a full htm client?
Thanks
Georg
no 3d accelerator. Global Racing Thunder runs slow on this device. this device might not be ideal for fast paced 3d games (or maybe some 3d apps even). well, we can't argue further on this since it's designed to be a "mobile TV/video" focused phone.
as far as i know, there is not naviwheel function in n96. only breathing is available.
What about GPS?
how is the sound quality through the headphones.. is it comporable to the n91 in terms of sonic experience.. i'm asking this coz i i have two devices noe.. n95 8gb and n91 only for music
Have a look at Eldar's comments about the N96 in his i8510 review on Mobile Review & also consider the fact it is more extensive & you will see who is the top dog now, if you pardon the pun.
The N96 seems an OK device to me, but I am glad I went for the i8510 instead as generally it does seem the superior device. Plus for Samsung to beat Nokia at their own S60 game makes things more interesting.
does the Nokia CP-293 case fits perfectly for the N96?
i know it was made especially for N96, but the carrying case CP-235 for N95 8gb gives scracthes to the left and right side part of the phone =(
i hope this is not repeated to the carrying case of N96..
please tell me if works just fine, thanks =)
I don't know if I got a dud or something, but my N96 is incredibly creaky. The battery cover creaks, and there's light leakage from gaps all over the phone. Build-quality is slightly inferior to my N82. It's fully plastic, and soft plastic at that - it came out of the (now also disintegrated) limited edition box with several scratches on the front fascia.
Can't turn on all the fancy FP2 transitions and stuff, but that's probably because the firmware is very, very new - it barely feels like a finished product.
I'm hoping that they turn on the Naviwheel later - there's still a Naviwheel option in the settings menu, but that only turns on 'breathing'.
The speakers are loud and crisp. Audio seems slightly better than the N82.
GPS locks on quickly, but seems a little wonky - it couldn't seem to make up it's mind about my position. Battery lasted almost 3 days with very minimal use (just fiddling with it).
It's a very cool looking phone, and it feels very good in the hand - I actually like how wide it is. Should be a pretty good phone once all the software bugs get worked out, and if build quality improves.
I readed some days ago a comparison between the results after benchmarks tests of the Nokia N85, N82 and N96 (I don't remember where I readed that, sorry...) and the results of N96 were very, very poor !
The N96 has an ARM9 processor clocked at 264MHz.
The N82 has ARM11 at 332MHz + 3D graphics acceleration.
The N85 has ARM11 at 369MHz.
The N96 processor is much lower on the performance scale both in architecture and clock speed, so it is quite naturally slower in any processor performance and graphics benchmarks. Whether it matters in real-life use cases is a different matter.
I'm trying to decide whether to buy an N95 or an N96 as a gift for a friend, and I'd like to know whether certain features are present on the N96:
1. Can an unlocked version be purchased and used with AT&T's service in the USA?
2. Can it use AT&T's 3G network in the USA?
3. Are there any other major USA providers with which it can be used for 3G?
4. Can it be hooked up to a desktop or laptop computer and used as a modem to get to the internet?
I already know the answers for the N95; can anyone point me to answers for the N96?
Thank you very much in advance.

1: Yes
2: There's a North American version of the N96:

3: T-Mobile, I suppose.
4: Yes.
When I first laid eyes on the N96 a couple of months ago, I thought to myself "I must get that phone." But now, after waiting so long for its release and with the announcement of the N85 (which seems to be quite a bit better and it's cheaper as well!), I've drifted away from the N96 and willing to wait an extra 2 weeks or so for the N85 to be released.

I get a feeling that N96 wil go down the drain soon. why?
Battery is the main thing. Why nokia puts a 1200mAh in N85, which has a smaller 2.6in more power efficient OLED screen, but a 950mAh battery in a power hungry 2.8in N96? 😎
Obviously, Nokia is going to put out N96i, just like the N95-2 (8G) in half a year time. Hmmm.... Two of my friends sold their N96 already b4 the bad news spread. Check this out:

Feel lucky not switching from my N95-8G to N96😊
