Kudos to neois over on Forum Nokia for producing a layman's illustrated guide to S60 5th Edition, looking at it from the point of view of a S60 3rd Edition user. If a picture's worth 1000 words, then this is a veritable thesis.

That's great, and I think it shows quite well the wisdom of trying to keep familiar elements from the previous versions of S60. Migrating from an existing S60 handset to S60 5th Edition will be incredibly easy.
I'm glad they have changed some things though, for example the browser looks a bit clearer to use, and of course the touchscreen has brought a nice load of new text input options (big keyboard, little keyboard, keypad, handwriting).
i agree tzer the text input methods are awsome so much choice ,the browser looks like it's improved lot's too can't wait to see it for real when they release their 1st s60v5 .
i've read alot of articles the last week saying the 5800 will be released in asian first and then come to UK in Febuary which i hope is not true b/c i want it for XMAS.
also i read orange have signed up for exclusive rights to sell the 5800 so get your unbranded version b/c their versions of the firmware suck

Ccraig, as far as we know Nokia's launching the actual 5800 phone in the last calendar quarter of this year, so that's October/November/December 2008.
There was talk on the Mobile Review site that it would be available in November, and they're based in Russia, so that's possibly when we'll see the European release.
What's possibly coming in January/Feb 2009 is the 5800 Comes With Music Edition, where you buy the phone for a slightly higher price and get unlimited downloads from the Nokia Music Store for a year.
If you want CWM with the 5800 you may have to wait until early next year, but if you just want the 5800 it should be available before Xmas.
It mentions that S60 V5 fully supports wmv files now,thats most interesting...🙄

You are right guys. The 5800 Xpressmusic will not be available for this Xmas in US and most parts of Europe. Nokia is releasing the handset first in developing countries like India, Indonesia, UAE, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Russia and Spain in 2008. Major markets like US and Europe will see the handset in stores in Q1 of 2009.
I have a question - I know that the 5th edition supports touch UI. And Nokia releasing 5800 is towards that. But does that mean that all 5th edition phones will be touch based only? I am sure there are plenty of people that like key based phones and not touch. It will be nice to have both touch and non touch v5 phones.
On the 5800 release date, I wonder if the delay actually means the operator-branded versions rather than all versions. Nokia says in that Reuters article that the delay was due to customisations, but that wouldn't stop them releasing the SIM-free version because that has no customisation at all and is usually the first version to go to market.
In other words, maybe the SIM-free version will be quietly released but no one will notice because people are so obsessed with network-branded versions.
Or another theory: The original launch dates announced by Nokia had the 5800 out for Xmas and the 5800 CWM out for January, but maybe Nokia don't want people buying the 5800 without CWM.

There will be both touch-based and key-based phones, the platform supports both input methods.
Presumably Nokia and Samsung will carry on releasing both kinds to see how the market reacts, as there's still no evidence that most people want touch.
I think it will always be a mixture of phone types as different people have different tastes and needs.
Mobile-review posted a detailed, but russian only (from what I've seen) (p?)review of the 5th edition. One thing that stood out is the criticism of the web browser when compared to Apple's. The article mentioned that the browser is slow to render detailed pages (even after initial loading) and very slow with youtube.
Coming from Eldar ( who is an even greater Nokia fanboy than AAS ) this may be a serious problem. I've been holding on to my e61i waiting for the next major revision of the great s60 platform to come out, so I hope Nokia deals with it.

Tzer2, not only Nokia and Samsung...its now well known that Sony Ericsson will announce one or more s60 v5 devices next year (UIQ is past unfortunately)
The interface concept looks good and mobile 2.0ish, however the selection bar's glossy effect is actually more of standing out than blending in to look like a transparent overlay.
The selection keys are not nicely finished on the blunt rounded edges compared to the surface 😞 But, the big buttons are surely the latest in designing trend and I am hopeful that Nokia will work it all out.
The scroll bars are ugly, too fat! lol. Will love to see a slicker and more detailed scroll bar in this ui as the screen is quite big.
I can imagine that this is still not the end GUI for the 5800 (If I'm not mistaken).
