N96 v12.x Firmware update

53 replies · 30,080 views · Started 07 November 2008

Ok, finally got it done last night after formating my laptop to XP.

Not noticed alot of difference so far, may seem a little quicker and still no function for the navi wheel?

Also has anyone else noticed that all 3 of the default themes are the same???

I've updated via pheonix, as soon as NSU update comes out I will reinstall with that just to make sure there are no further improvments.

Hello!

Got the files myself, thats phoniex 2004 with the 2006 patch and the firmware for the n96.

before i go in alone, i would also like to have a step by step if thats okay

if you could send it me that would be nice.

Thanks in advance

EDIT: managed to get the files to eventually work, (i used phoneix 2008 with the files floating around on the net) updated perfectly, and tomtom is miles quicker (sorry about the pun). either hold off and wait for it with nsu or get the update and risk bricking. There is defiantly a small speed increase with the update, but its not in any way drastically different.

Tony

Well a bit dissapointed really, now on V12 not really noticing any difference........in fact the delay in loading screens for message replying or forwarding is worse! takes a little longer to load up, display comes on then its about another 10-15 seconds until signal and battery power icons come up?

Did it right format-upgrade-format, just not impressed not the revolutionary firmware update I hoped it would be.

Oh yeah stil no navi wheel 😡

did mine also via phoenix bout an hour ago, id been told by 3 people that there was more free RAM at bootup (63mb), mines still around 50mb free, phone is faster etc with no lags tho.

Hey,

I tried to follow quite a few guides with poor results, then I came across this one below and it sort of worked, then I found out the issue I was having was due to one of the installs being the newer version, so I tracked down the older version, installed, it picked up the drivers and installed them (it was having issues with the ROM driver). I've put all the software I used at mtlinternational.co.uk/nokia. I had to do a few clean installs of XP for this to work, you MUST install to your C drive for this to work.

"1st of all Before Flashing:

- Make sure your phone is fully charged

- backup your phone settings !!!!!

- remove the memory card and the sim card from the phone!

- remove all Nokia drivers or Nokia software from your pc YES including Nokia pc suite

- make sure you delete all the empty ' Nokia directories' from C:\Program Files\

(rebooting might be a good idea here)

Install those files in that particular order :

1_ Install msxml6_x86.msi
2_ Install vcredist_x86.exe
3_ Install Nokia_Connectivity_Cable_Driver.msi
4_ Install Nokia_Flashing_Cable_Driver.msi
5_ Install Nokia_Service_Tool_Drivers.msi
6_ Install FLS-4Drv1.34.exe ( click next next next and say yes when prompted )
7_ Install Phoenix_Service_Software.msi (Version 2008)
8_ Fix Dongle by installing Phoenix_2006_2008_fixer.exe

Then you install firmware (Nokia_firmware_RM-247_EMEA_12.035_v04.00EFAJQROM.exe )
to C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix very important you install this to the phoenix directory
** please note that I installed everything in its default location witch is why my path is C:\Program Files\...

Now ,

In order not to get screwed up always format your cell before and after flashing firmware. Use this code to format *#7370# default security code needed is 12345, if you changed it use your own code.

Step 1 : _ Start Phoenix

Create User if it asks to. ( it did not ask me maybe it will ask you who knows ! )

Turn on the phone (it will start in offline mode because there is no SIM card inside).
Plug in the USB cable to both the phone and the computer.
When prompted, select "PC Suite" from the menu list on the phone.
Wait for *all* drivers to fully install themselves before proceeding.
(If some driver fail to install unplug phone, reboot pc / start phoenix then connect phone it should work )

go to 'File/Manage Connection/
click on 'new' then check the box that says USB , click next ,It will then search your USB ports for the phone. When it finds it, click Finish , click apply then close

go to 'File/scan product then change the operating mode to Normal

go to 'Flashing/Firmware Update then browse for your product code
( I am in North America and I chose Europe 1 everything worked perfect I have an Unlocked N96-1 with chinese and english keypad)

Hit 'Refurbish'

You will get a message saying : An optional file is missing. This file is: RM247_001_000_M007.fpsx. Would you like to continue flashing? Just hit YES"

Grrr - hurry up NSU! Before I go ahead and flash it myself anyway.

The v12 firmware is my last hope - if useability of my N96 doesn't significantly improve following the firmware upgrade, it's ebay for this puppy and back to my N95 (or even purchase of a non-Symbian/Windoze phone). I've consistently been an early adopter of Nokia Symbian handsets and seen poor performance with early firmware before, but the N96 has driven me to search the net frantically for a senior Nokia email address to complain to. Can barely stand the slow refresh when opening or replying to text messages!

Please Nokia - get v12 on NSU soon....it wont necessarily save my N96 from ebay, but it's giving it a chance!

Too late for me. I've had the N96 for best part of a month now and it's unbearably slow - even the N95 wasn't this bad when it was first released !!

those of you with slow phones need to format phone mem and the mass memory, alot of ppl have same problems and after a full/hard format everything works fine

I am having bother trying to flash my n96. I tried it normal flash and dead flash and all i get is "Unable to set the phone to flash mode. Unable to flash." after it runs through all the normal sending stuff...

Could someone help me with this please.

Thanks

The rapidshare phoenix file was for f/w 12.035

NSS now reports that 12.043 is available .... very interesting!

Yeah, I never really got any sort of improvement from v12.035, and with nokia never releasing it left wandering it if was genuine?

Upgrading to 12.043 now via NSU, so will see how that goes

Hi everyone

Just wanted to post here regarding my 1st couple of hours with the new firmware.

* Location: Chennai, India
* Mode of Update: Firmware Over the Air, using WLAN thru my home wireless broadband connection
* Size: Around 2.5 to 3 MB
* Time taken: In total, around 10-12 mins (including downloading, restarting etc)
* Custom version: 12.043.098.1
* Firmware date: 26 Nov 2008

My observations:

* Phone is generally faster to use. Menus seem to open up faster.
* SMS reply screen comes up faster in my phone. New SMS screen also faster.
* The scratchy beep sound (especially when changing profiles) is gone. Beep sound is now smooth.
* Free phone memory is 40.2 MB, while free space in mass memory is only 5.1 GB since I have lots of songs and some videos stored. Memory details were checked from inside the Music Library.
* Operation of phone is faster even with more complex themes, like those made by the creator "Dhanusaud". Ivanov's themes like Saku and Spirit are also installed and the N96 is now faster with these themes as well.
* Navi wheel still not enabled. Only "breathing" option available.

The update was done last night around 8pm or so. These are my initial observations. Shall post back later with additional observations if any.

Thanks and warm regards,
Venkat

well i just got round to updating to v 12.043

my handset is a 3 UK model and there was no update so i used the info you guys posted, changed the product code via NSS and NSU updated it with no problems to V12.043 within 10 minutes!

Top work guys, and i can admit that between 10.065 and 12.043 there are some definate speed increases!!!

Real player version is now reporting :
S60 HX cvs_cays221_20080910:05:00:00utc 10 Sep 2008 21:23

Not had a single crash since I applied the update, I don't think i've even rebooted to be honest.

Phone has been used for a 380 mile round trip with TomTom, many phone calls - surfing the .net via Wireless & 3G.

All I can say is ... apply the update with Phoenix, it is worth it. The firmware feels legit - and if it isn't I don't care 'cos it works a treat!

Someone asked for photo's - what do you photo's of? The menu's don't appear any different.

have been searching for ages online till i came across this post. whoever started this one is already my hero guys. Hardout! have bleed for ages trying to revive my 2 months old but now dead n96 thanks to the dumb NSU (damn u nokia for being such idiots) downloaded phoenix and landed up getting all these code locked archive of the installers or trojans on my work comp 😛
have finally fresh formatted a standalone with XP and would LURRVE if ya could send me the password to the installer for phoenix and instructions to get it off. i got jhonnywalkers pheniox installer archive but have been waiting on the password to unlock the archive 😞
cheers again in advance

Hello all,

I have bricked my n96 trying to update the firmware with a vista machine. Please can someone tell me how to get a copy of Phoenix and perform a dead flash on it. I have spent hours trying to sort this and am not getting anywhere.

Thanks in advance

Paul

checking now, this might just stop me putting my N96 on ebay like like I was planning to do!
