"117.2 x 55.3 x 15.9 mm (18.25 mm at camera area)"?
What does this "18.25mm at camera area" mean??
How does this happen?

It means that the phone is 15.9 mm thick, except for the (protruding) area around the camera lens, where the phone is 18.25 mm thick.
I guess everyone see this coming. Still, it is good seeing Nokia atleast answer LG and Samsung offerings.
This phone is literally gonna be larger-than-life; both literally and its prize tag...
Around 553.19 inc VAT (assuming it goes back up by then).
Nobody seems to be interested about hardware acceleration in the phone. Even the question regarding this are not answered. Is it Nokia's instruction to bloggers not to disclose the apparent lack of this feature in the flagship?
What the hell they did with 'space'?!
Overall, it's pretty impressive spec, but usability is marked with question IMO
I must confess to being *amazed* by some of the ridiculous comments on this launch!
Firstly, Nokia has obviously decided to create a "TyTn -killer" and therefore has copied the form factor; That being the case, how come none of the twits posting has excoriated HTC for producing umpteen iterations of 'chunky monkey'?
Do you lot realise that if you wish to have a reasonably -sized screen, talk less of a qwerty keyboard, the device NECCESSARILY has to be large enough to 'contain' them?
The tweezer- carrying idiots that think we all want to squint at postcard-sized displays with tiny keypads should crawl back under their rocks and purchase one of the many "tichy" phones- Nokia is trying to give people more options and anybody with the most passing acquaintance with marketing should understand that no ONE device will satisfy the needs of all! Get a life! If you want a "shirt pocket" device, wait for a touch-enabled e71- this is NOT for you, DUH!!!
Just wanna note that I doubt Nokia will go any higher then the qHD resolution, mainly because it is good enough. For detachable keyboard? get a SU-8W. Regarding the transitions (useless for me, but whatever), the promo video http://www.nokia.com/A41445512 has them, so something similar ought to be in the final. I don't see how the hell the USB port would be "useless" when it's not on the bottom of the device.
And, finally, I agree with the comment that we need OMAP3 for more powerful games and emulators to take advantage of.
This looks really amazing, but i think the 5800 is really comparable to the n97which makes the 5800 the best quality to price phone
I love Nokia. And I love Apple. But both the iPhone AND the N97 don't do it for me. The iPhone shook up the industry and people now want smartphones with great UI and screens. The N97 has a good feature set but is too big and doesn't push Nokia's existing boundaries enough in all areas.
A groundbreaking Nokia would have a superb form factor, hires screen, incredible camera optics and video (bettering ANYTHING they've done before), superb HTML email and web widgets firmly integrated into the OS.
Nokia need to sit down and possibly converge the functionality of the E series AND N series to provide a device that is not only good at multimedia but exploits the symbian OS as brilliantly as possible.
Menneisyys wrote:Nope, it's not a capacitive touchscreen (like that of the iPhone); it's a plain stupid resistive one (like all WinMo devices or the BlackBerry Storm). This sucks in a lot of respects (except for using with a stylus or any sharp pointing device)... I bet it doesn't have multitouch either.
Plain stupid, huh? I got a friend with an iPhone to do a test yesterday...
I told him to put my winter gloves on (they are fabric, but quite thin due to one of those branded wonder insulation materials)...
Then I told him to unlock his iPhone...
He couldn't. It just doesn't work! Capacitive screens require direct contact by skin or something with the electrical properties of skin. As soon as you wear gloves (and most people in Europe will have to at the moment due to how cold it is), an iPhone becomes about as responsive as the Norwegian Blue Parrot that John Cleese sold to Michael Palin
Go on a search engine and look, there are companies out there that are selling 'special iPhone gloves'. Guess what they are? Fingerless!
Which is just fine if you are a device designer for a company in Southern California (yes you Mr Ive), because you and everyone you work with will never have to keep your fingers warm in winter.
But if you are a device designer for a company just outside Helsinki, then using a resistive screen in your device and therefore not getting frostbite might not seem as 'plain stupid' as the conclusion you clearly jumped to without thought.

wow that last post oh my god, best comment ever. that just about answers all the isheeps that there iphone touch screen has a big problem to add to all the other iphone problems. go on bluetooth a photo to someone else i dare you ha ha ha
i had to upgrade my memory card in my n95 classic from 8gb to 16gb because i was running out of space so to say the least this n97 will be top of the list next year. i personaly think that Nseries nokia are simply the best phones in terms of all the functions and stuff it does
im seriously looking forwar to this phone now, but i do agree with some people that announcing a phone that wont be available for another 6 months is a little annoying
in one of the youtube videos a dude said that the .SDK for the on screen movable widgets will be available later this year. Does this mean that the widget based home screen would be available in the nokie 5800?
dame i didnt log in when posting that last reply just above me, it was me anyway
This phone is the phone I wanted to get so far.. Anyone know about the processor and amount of RAM this phone have?
malerocks wrote:Why oh why do flagships and exciting launches always have to be big in size? It's not big, it's about the size of my E70 and I keep that in my pocket all the time. If making it smaller means compromising on battery capacity then I for one will not be interested in a device that only runs for 3/4 of a day before needing a recharge.
fernando20 wrote:has them, so something similar ought to be in the final. I don't see how the hell the USB port would be "useless" when it's not on the bottom of the device.
Charging points have always worked best when there on the bottom of the phone as they allow them to be placed in docks with chargers built in. I just want to place my phone in the dock and have it charge and sync.
When you have to plug it into the dock and then piss around plugging in a 5cm peice of wire it kind of destroys the ease of having a dock not to mention a car kit. Why nokia see fit to place every sodding charger part everywhere but the bottom now defies logic completely.
People don't want to dock their phone upside down and the only way it will work is to dock it sideways which means you have to line up the entire side of the base and deal with your phone being in landscape all the time rather than just plonking it on. Docking it sideways in the car is going to be a pain as most cars dont have the space to dock a phone landscape as their often placed on the air vents and the majority of phone holders are catered to hold the device in the vertical position.
Well said. When using it for satnav, anything else other than the bottom puts strain on the end of the lead, especially if its USB.
Anyone know the resolution of the 16:9 video recording?
Great cell phone but it misses a few essential features.
1) a lighter
2) beer and wine opener. (I dont understand why Finnish guys cannot combine together cell phone and Swiss army knife)
3) and it would be nice if the cell phone get an electroshock function like in James Bond movies
Waiting for the E9x Communicator.
Nokia should improve the native applications, now hardware rocks with 32gb and large screens but what about the software?where is the Calendar catagorize?,powerful Contact catagorize?,More useful Font sizes and types? "some people dont rust me when i say S60 run .ttf fonts......Laptops in our pockets SHOULD HAVE this.
Nokia, unfortunately, has a history of adding features to their phones in an ad hoc fashion: a button here, a new menu there, and a new application somewhere deep in some folder. The resulting user experience is creaky and unpleasant (I've owned N73, E50, E90, E71, N82, and some other Nokia phones).
Touch is even harder than the other things Nokia has been trying to do. Good touch support requires a complete rewrite; this doesn't look like it's it.
It's not like Nokia hasn't had the time. Google and Apple both developed new platforms from scratch in a few years. Nokia is resting on its laurels, and if they don't do something more radical than this, they are going to fail.

Do you own a Nokia touchscreen phone?
Yeah, sure Nokia is "resting on its laurels". What a gratuitous, stupid and unfair comment. Did you actually use the FINAL version of the N97? No. So STFU.
The official video (CG animation) of the N97 UI on Nokia's website shows fancy transitions and smooth animations. So please reserve your verdict for the final version of the product.
I can't wait for it to be released at puremobile.com/Nokia/Nokia-N97-White-GSM-Phone since they will have the unlocked version so i won't have to renew contracts and all that stuff. I want to have to have this phone already. Full qwerty and touch in a Nokia….muchbetter than the Nokia 5800. Nokia just hit the jackpot!
For all you Nokia fan boys.... you are just fooled into Nokia's marketing tricks.
Just because the spec sheet says something, doesn't mean it's necessarily better in reality. For example, a 16m color screen and a 64k color screen may at times provide equal picture quality, so that is not a determining factor. Additionally, 32GB of memory may appeal to those mostly interested in talking and boasting numbers, but in reality, how many people actually store more than 8GB of RELEVANT data on their phones?? And finally, just because Nokia brings in an old service or concept just rebranded under its own franchise, such as OVI and Maps, doesn't mean it's superior in quality. Facebbok is the most advanced social networking medium and Google Maps is the most feature-rich and interactive navigation service out there - both available free.
So the next time you decide to bash another company's product, claiming Nokia is better, just remember to think about what you're really fighting for. Nokia doesn't care that you risk your reputation to defend its name; it's principally interested in generating profits, even if that means taking you for an endless, sophistical ride and feeding you with all these false notions of its superiority through its innovative and imposing marketing techniques.
Admittedly, I was starting to wonder if Nokia would ever bring out another touchscreen device, as I've owned my 7710 for 3 1/2 years now and am in need of an update. I was seriously considering the iPhone, but just couldn't bring myself to buy one. Now, that Nokia have finally come out of their "quiet" period on the Touchscreen Smartphone front, I'm more than willing to wait!
O - look, an IPHONE troll.
I had to laugh at your Google Maps comment - lol - Whats makes it so rich?
Have you even used Nokia Maps?
And i wont go into Nokia Maps 3.0 - Use your beloved Google and do that yourself.
And while your on Google m8, use it to educate yourself on Nokia devices before you come back here talking gibberish.
That is all
this device was designed specifically with me as total inspiration, (telepathy) , so those that say this gadget is perfect, your right, it's perfect for me! A student, single parent& professional, seeking the most out of EVERY Gizmo in my life and accepting nothing less... I can't make one, but I can buy one, and I will have so much fun trying to work one. I just think this N97 is reasonably made and IS undoubtedly good looking to be a miniaturized computer/ultra-phone
would Joe the Plumber put $700 on anything this neat? needless to say, erroneous reference much...
does any1 have an idea who will carry N97 here in US?
This looks quite good, but ... isnt the design jst copied straight from HTC, which seems great, but in practice is too small to use properly.
The touchscreen will be interesting, I have a BlackBerry Storm, and although it has its faults, after a month or so, im now very used to it, and cant imagine going back...
As for memory, 32GB is impressive, but lets be honhest, i paid 7.50 for an 8GB Micro SD card, and theyre coming down all the time, a 1TB drive can now be bought for under 100...
All in all ill be interested to see this, as Ive had a Nokia N95 8GB for a while, and the N96 is jst the same, but this would be worthing getting...
When is this released in the UK ?

Remember that this is internal memory we're talking about. You're not getting 1 tb of internal memory on a pmp anytime soon. Maybe 2 years from now when the prices of SSD have significantly dropped.
