I had a N95-1 too, but have to say the camera is brilliant! As far as the battery goes, i get 3 days out of it. I would suggest going to the menu page and see if you have anything running. There will be an icon next to a symbol. This causes massive battery life reduction if there is anything running. I find that contacts, music player are the worst. Ensure they are all closed.
Well, got the same results as everyone else. Stopped at 27% so pulled the battery. It's fine and I was willing to try it again but it starts downloading all over again. It downloaded the bloody files once yet it insists on starting again?!? It took 3 hours to download ffs. I don't mind that the release of the first update took a while (I had an N95 and the first update for that took a while) but it would be nice if it worked. I won't be buying another Samsung mobile anytime in the future.

strange?! It only took about 30mins to install the second time. I guess part of the download was cached on the pc?

Did the update work the second time? And when you tried to update did you get the screen telling you the update hadn't worked and you could put the phone in recovery mode if it didn't boot?
thanks for the reply, yeah this is a fresh system no gps, wifi as and when and two phone calls on the device and I am already fed up with the incredible gadgetry that this phone offers only to be let down with lazy and substantial software. I mean this phone is suppose to be the n96 killer but all i see is a fantastic looking device that suffers from incredible lag when taking photos, no podcast ability or the ability to save audio at the last point of play and a battery that seems to die at any given moment. When the n95 first came out it was a sod of a machine then the updates came flooding from nokia and next thing you know we have a-gps, podcast, a camera that is rapid and improving quality. The time samsung has had with the software i.e. nokias development over the several years of symbian and this is the best that they can do, it is shocking. But the technology of the phone 8 mega, and a web experience that is enjoyable is extraordinarily amazing.
Well it is downloading faster this time. It's only 80 seconds per 1% instead of 90. Sheesh.
As I said, just leave it updating while u are sleeping... after I did that I went to the updater again and it said It was up-to-date, it is really slow.
Success! The last time it stopped dead at 27% and stayed there. This time at 27% it immediately started 'downloading raw phone data' and went on to finish. Time to have a poke around to see if I can find anything that's different.
Well the update happened eventually, took a while as mentioned to download the files but the phone is reporting the updated firmware as listed with a version date of 17/10/2008, no major changes I have noted as yet. Only differences so far is Fring missing from apps. and Asphalt 3 is now Asphalt 4.
If anything else is noted I will update as and when.
Is the update just that big or do Samsung have very slow servers?
I think they just have slow servers... and at the moment i cant connect to it to get the update :frown:

Well after a good 5-6 hours the software finally downloaded and installed with no problems :icon14:
Will see how it goes
Do we have a changelog anywhere?
No changelog as yet, and I can't get my phone to update (software says it's unsupported) on 3 different computers, so i can't even check on known bugs 😞

17/10? How weird is that. Mine now says by pressing *#1234#

Has any one experienced the software upgrade program trying to read the info from the phone and hanging??
I have tried 2 computers already but I get the same result. It all installs fine, the phone is detected and when I start the window pops up and starts retrieving the info from the phone but nothing happens at all... I even let it run for over an hour...
Any one?
what Os are you using, i tried with win xp and got nowhere, used a vista os and the phone installs the firmware.
I tried on Vista and got no end of troubles. Had a bash with xp when I got home and it seemed to go o.k after a few attempts. Hung at 27% but managed to get it going again (really though, did Samsung not test this before putting it out?). Seems to be hit and miss if it works, just keep trying.
Things that still haven't changed:
Camera still doesn't remember settings, eg. you still have to turn on anti shake every time you open the camera.
Things I've noticed that have changed:
eh...we've got Asphalt4 now.
There might be more but I've not had time to have a good poke around. Google maps is 2.2.0.11, not sure if this is an update, I hadn't thought to check beforehand.
My compile date is 19/09/08
I am running Vista and it worked fine for me.
I have noticed Fring has gone.
gmac00
I am using XP... No luck at all... But I guess since there is no much in terms of upgrades I will let it stay as is...
Well, to me the phone seems a bit faster overall.. the web-browser is much quicker and smoother when loading big pages.... the HSDPA icon is now 3.5g instead of the 3G+ it was before..
I have Asphalt 3 and 4 installed, fring has gone. not had chance to test the camera yet.
Well I dont think it is any faster. Google maps takes about a week to log onto the satellites, which is just as bad as before. At least on my old n95-1 it was logged on it seconds. In fact, it just gave up trying!!!
A few icons have changed. Still no response from Samsung.
Also seems strange that some people are getting different versions than others. Surely, if they are bought in the UK from carphonewarehouse, they are all unlocked and should have the same version to start with, as there has been no updates yet.
I can't get my phone to "connect" at all. I've tried on 2 completely different computers and re-installed all manner of things (not just the PC Suite software). Unfortunately for whatever reason (I think there must be more than one variant of software installed on so-called "unlocked" phones; or Samsung's software update tools (which are merely re-badged Nokia tools) are simply not working correctly) I'm so far finding it impossible to get the software update tool to go past the "phone software detection" phase. 😞

Daft question.... when you plug your phone in does it come up with the menu on the screen of the phone and if so are you selecting pc suite?
Mine has been "Checking phone information" for about 20 mins now.
skeebs wrote:Daft question.... when you plug your phone in does it come up with the menu on the screen of the phone and if so are you selecting pc suite?
Daft - maybe. It is the sort of thing people forget to check.
Yes, my phone is in PC-Sync mode (the phone will auto-pick the last mode you used, even if you don't physically select the mode when the USB cable is plugged in) and I can (correctly) get the "phone not connected" error message when using any other USB mode.
I've lso gone through some of Nokia's and SonyEricsson's old tricks about starting the phone without a SIM card and so on. Unfortunately it's not detecting in these modes either.

hmmmm.....not sure what to say! Hopefully Samsung will get their fingers out of their backsides soon and sort it out. These comments appearing on these forums; if they had been here when I got it, i would not have gone for this phone. Still you learn from your mistakes. What I have learnt is Samsung is great at making DVD players and TV's and dont have a clue about mobile phones. They should leave it to the big boys like Nokia and Sony Ericsson, who offer excellent customer support. Rant over! 😎
I finally got it going... I had to manually install the USB drivers package for Samsung.. After that, the Software upgrade found the phone instantly...
I ran the upgrade which failed within one hour. Ran it again as the software suggested the power on the phone by holding down 4 & 7... After that within 2 minutes it completed successfully.
I have been playing with it for a couple of hours and except for the games update I have not found any differences whatsoever... Mind you, i did not have any issues to begin with...
Overall, I am truly disappointed with the way Samsung is going about in supporting this phone.. The PC suite implementation is totally poor for lack of better words... I have been spoiled by Nokia so far, but Samsung is a total let down for sure.
The Samsung support site now lists the i8510 as having an update available. Of course it just tells you to install the latest pcsuite and do it that way but at least it's listed.
