Can someone tell me which ports I need to open for the downloader? It's having problems contacting the server
Software Update Available
stuclark wrote:There's something going on which makes the updater "choosy" at best as to which phones it's going to update. My suspicion is that this issue is a driver / software issue, relating to how PC Suite installs on each PC. I don't think (at least for UK handsets) it's an issue with different phone versions.
I've asked Samsung's techy department to give us more info on this (it's annoying me that I can't get my HH7 handset to update, having tired on 3 PCs), but so far I haven't heard back from them.
Make sure its not in offline mode, that stopped it working for me.

The phone? Or PC Suite? Can't find an option for offline mode in PC Suite... But I can hardly imagine that you mean the phone, because why would you have it in offline mode unless you're on an airplane?
If the phone is in offline mode, the software update tool "hangs" while reading the phone information.
(and yes, I've tried that. I bet there isn't any trick I haven't tried on mine)

The phone.
Because you might want to put your SIM card in another handset in case you get an important call while updating.
Because you know you are somewhere with no coverage and you dont want to waste your phones battery by it searching for network constantly.
Among other reasons
Have to say I'm pretty unhappy with Samsung. Last night I decided to update the software and started at 11pm, by 1:30 am it had downloaded the software and had got to 45% reflashing the phone (I could have flashed 10 Nokia's in that time1).
This morning I came in to a phone which boots as far as the Samsung logo and then reboots, and a PC which has restarted after Microsoft sent it an important update aaargh! (I know I should have thought of this but 1:30 is well after bedtime for me)
Samsung told me they don't support customer upgrades online for anything except the Omnia. They said the download is so slow because its on one of Nokia's servers and they are trying to get Nokia to pull it (sure!). Then they said my only option was to take it to a service centre for reflashing - oh well that's a few hours down the pan then.
The whole problem only arose because of the 2 and half hours it took to get the update IMHO. Before I do waste half a day I don't have, I assume there really isn't any alternative?
Still can't update my phone, Studio says its connected and I can access the phone and transfer files and sync it but when I try and update it I get the message its not connected
Firmware version HH6
My phone sailed through the software update, without any problems, first time. Although it was a rather long-winded sail. I started mine at 01:00 and was done by 03:00. Can't see any obvious benefits of the new firmware. The 'autolock' bug still remains and the battery life is still poor.
Maybe you guys should wait for a firmware worth updating to - if one ever arrives. Hopefully, Samsung will have sorted out their update service by then.
Stuclark, i think your assumption on the "phone updater does not support your phone", or similar message, is a reasonable one....it appears to be PC specific rather then mobile specific.
My experience in updating to HJ3 from HH7 was a bit of a nightmare.
It took forever to connect to the server, but when it did i got the 27% bug...i then tried again, and it still didnt pass the 27% mark.
I tried for the third time, and it passed the 27% mark, but i ran out of space on my C drive and the update failed to complete!
I tried to update the mobile for a fourth time, and i got the "phone updater does not support your phone" message evertime i loaded the phone updater software on my PC....i checked my firmware and i was stuck with HH7.
I then tried for the fifth time...on a different PC to the fourth attempt....i connected my phone and the pc suite suggested i run it in recovery mode, which i did. the software updater then downloaded the files and installed them without any probs...i now have HJ3 firmware.

Are you running Vista by any chance? i had the same problem.....find a XP machine and then update. the phone will be recognised then.
Yup, using Vista on laptop and main computer, will find one my mates who still uses XP.
Worked fine for me on Vista
i have an i8510, as far as i know its never been updated from new.
im using vista and am trying to access the update.
ive downloaded the samsung suite version 7 1 47 8 but cannot get the update.
i either get the messages
1) phone software updater does not support connected model.
2) cannot contact server try later
3) no update for selected phone.
im connecting via pc mode on the phone.
there is no firewall stopping anything
any help would be appreciated

I havent found one difference yet really.
ACTUALLY, theres a nice little bug where your GPRS access points can disappear in the Web application until you restart your phone 😞
Do those who have updated to this new firmware still get the annoying google maps crash? My phone will ALWAYS crash when trying to use google maps. As has been discussed in other topics, google maps will ask what internet connection i wish to use, then it will ask me again, then it will reset the phone. Once this has happened, I can use the program fine. Anyone noticed an improvement?? Of all the bugs with this phone, this is the most infuriating for me.
It seems from reading other forums that some UK users (with XX prefix) are getting firmware version HJ4 dated 19/11/08. However those of us that updated last week are stuck with HJ3 and are unable to update again as the updater software says that the phone is not supported. IMO Samsung have made huge mess of this, and don't seems to know what they are doing.

Well, I tried to update my phone last week using PC Studio Software Updater and ended up having to take it into a CPW service centre to get them to reload the firmware back onto my phone. When I got my phone back it is still shows as the HH7 version and I am not about to update it until after the holdays.
I just did a quick check using the updater and the available update that it shows for my handset is HJ3. I dont know where the HJ4 update is coming from but its certainly not showing as an available one for my handset.
Ive not found any bug fixes in HJ3 but theres some new little bugs that wernt in HH7

Can you give some examples please?

Access points that dissapear (like they do when youre in offline mode or out of coverage) in the Web application, and probably in other apps too, until you restart the phone.
Happened to me twice in 3 days.

Were they WiFi or network APNs?
Could it be the phone is getting "cleverer" at not displaying APNs it can't currently use, or are thry always available immediately after a reboot? (without anything else changing)

The network packet data access points dissapeared.
I know they are supposed to when youre out of coverage, but I had a good signal. The phone even showed the little packet data available symbol underneath the 3G logo.
Maybe i dropped out of signal and the phone just never put them back

Maybe... it does sound a bit bug-like though 😞

The music player bugs from HH7 such as low speed with a large library and the most annoying one, where listening to the Recently Played and Most Played playlists will cause the music to stop after one or two songs until you start it again yourself.
So it sounds like this "update" hasn't updated anything. Has anyone out there noticed any sort of improvements at all except for the new version of Asphalt?

Quite a few times when Ive dropped out of signal my phone will lock on "Searching..." even once Im back in coverage, which as well as meaning I cant receive calls will drain the battery too.
Trying to change network setting to UMTS or GSM only then back doesnt fix it. If I swap operator selection to manual it will find my network but reports not allowed when I select it.
Thought it was a network/sim thing but never happened before this firmware or on another handset with this sim card.
Restarting the phone works though, until I lose signal a few more times.

No need for turning your phone off and on...Just go to setting and select When Needed then after 2-3 sec select When available....Uolaaaa....No turning off the phone!!! Same at mine!!!
I've finally got my 8510 back from Samsung after it was killed off by the upgrade process - flashed with HH7 software😞
Before I risk killing it again, are there really any benefits to upgrading it (I normally upgrade everything but my last two attempts have killed a Nokia 6120 and this, so I'm getting a bit more cautious!)
I too have been holding off upgrading after my attempt ended up sending my phone back to CPW to get fixed as the samsung firmware update failed spectacularly.
CPW tried to put the latest firmware on my phone only to tell me they were also having problems with it so they reverted it back to the earlier version which my phone was supplied with.
Not heard of any real benefits to getting this update either. Was hoping Samsung would get their update process sorted out but it does not seem to be happening very quickly at all.
I got my phone yesterday and was trying to update the software last night. Took 4 attempts before it succeeded.
Ive not noticed anything different other than some apps disappearing.
I actually now find the phone has an annoying delay when moving menu to menu or when beginning a text message meaning it misses the first couple of letters.
