i updated phone, but on the updater it said update was not completed normally, if the phone does not run properly, please run recovery, however i now have software version i8510XXHJ3- 07/10/2008 and custom version i8510L08XEUHJ1-01/10/2008 and asphalt 4, so looks like it worked.first time stuck on 27% and then disconnected, tried again and it ran, and i also got the red screen sayin "all download", also i now have 92 processes as opposed to 96 before
Software Update Available
Well folks, all I can say is use this update at your peril. After 2 unsuccessful attempts at installing the update my phone is now fried. Tried to update the final time and it got to 27% and then it said something like 'can not load phone rom' and then crashed pc studio. Now my phone will not start. It just sits there with the Samsung logo and web address and will not get any further.
Ahh thank you Samsung, what a fantastic update. At least now I only have one error to worry about.
Anyone know how to get it to boot past this stage or do you think it will be a trip back to CPW?
Nice to be without my phone just in time for Christmas *sigh*

Find the old thread about a few pages back about the Samsung website adding a software update section, and use the links on that to get the software to flash manually.
You might end up on a XEHI5 build or similar though

Thanks for the info on that but I prefer to keep it with the official options as far as I can. I put my phone into the local Carphone Warehouse service centre and I should have it back tomorrow with the new firmware installed and all the pesky dust cleaned - yay!
😊

Unbelivable! Call Samsung today and had a row with someone who insisted you cannot upgrade the firmware yet. Gave him this website address and told him to get his facts right. He has crawled back under his rock and is now going to call me back! Typical!

That was ridiculous. How Samsung's own staff didn't know that there was a new firmware update?
And if what he said was true, how could Samsung let an unfinished FW be downloadable?
It's quite simple how some of Samsung's staff don't know that a firmware has been released, you see this sort of thing happening all the time. And it doesn't indicate a crap company, it merely indicates that one department within a company (in this case the S60 dev. team) have had a firmware released, but a different department (in this case the website support team, probably based in a different country from the S60 dev. team) don't know about it.
There's no need to shoot Samsung for this small, internal communication error.

Skeebs, I have exactly the same version information as you. It finally showed completed sucessfully at the third time of asking. First attempt I had an error downloading data, second attempt stuck at 27%(had to remove battery) and then finally I left it overnight last night. Had to restore contacts etc from back up but no big deal. However it does seem strange we have a version dated 19 Sep, mine was a CPW model.
Other thing I've noticed is that if I go into phone software update on PC studio now, it still tries to tell me that previous update did not update normally and do I want to go to recovery. Now I'm not sure if that's stuck in the memory from my 2nd attempt that was aborted at 27% or if the third attempt didn't actually load properly (despite it saying it had). If I ignore that and try and run the updater software I now get "Phone Updater Software does not support your model".
Again this doesn't seem right as I'd expect to see something like "You already have the latest version of software".
I'm debating whether or not to go down the recovery route to see what happens, any thoughts?
Compare the firmware information you get by typing *#1234# and *#0000#
*#0000# is the "OFFICIAL" firmware information. *#1234# gives you internal build information.

Not sure how this compares with everyone else, I'm still not convinced mines been updated properly although Asphalt definitely updated to ver 4.
Managed to update properly on the second time, first time it froze at 36%, with the bootloader showing on the screen, had a really big scare that I had fried my phone.
Second time worked like a charm, when I press *#1234# I get the following

That's what I've got, what do you see when pressing *#0000#? I'm not convinced mine's updated properly either.

Screen capture is still running after the upgrade..on my phone anyway.

great if this was the course of the battery problems what happens now..LOL
fed with this phone i think its time to stick it on ebay and get rid
I'm going to stick my neck out here for flaming again: Screencapture was NOT causing battery life issues!
I tried it now several times on a PC with Vista and on a PC with XP but the software updater won't work. It searches and searches and searches...
What to do now?
stuclark wrote:I'm going to stick my neck out here for flaming again: Screencapture was NOT causing battery life issues!
hmhm...just that since i killed that and removed Garmin I saw a big increase in my battery, 7 days and 3 bars left up untill this morning from when i had it plugged into USB to run update, what was the course of it or is it still a mystery?
cheers

Garmin seems to have been universally identified as a problem, so I suspect that.
The fact that some of us can run without any advanced task manager, and with Screencapture running, and *still* get very decent battery life, indicates that screencapture was not causing the problem.
Having said that, 7 days is AMAZING - I would expect you'd had to kill every even-slightly-optional process in the phone to have achieved that.

It's not really surprising - everyone who has updated their phone now has the same firmware version!
You'll know if the update failed - you'll either have a dead phone, or it will still have HH7 installed.
I didnt mind downloading 120MB firmware when I had a Nokia because it downloaded at a decent speed.
My connection is capable of getting 1,200KBps, (equivalent of a 14Mb connection) yet at the moment this is downloading at about 20Kb. 😞
I kind of think I know what is going on.
Obviously everyone thinks we have a new firmware version, but obviously when people are successful they dont get a newer version than October, so in Samsung's eyes there is not a new one. They have simply updated the PC Suite software to include the software update button which Samsung anticipate using in the future. I think they have not blocked there servers from giving out an old version. I think version HJ3 is universal version for everyone. Maybe im wrong, but either way a new version must be released soon.

HJ3 *IS* the new firmware version. You shouldn't all get worried about it having a build date of October.
Remember that any firmware needs thoroughly testing before it can be released. This is why the update was "built" a month or two before it was released. It does NOT mean that Samsung's servers are giving out an "old" firmware.
Apart from Asphalt 3 becoming Asphalt 4, has anyone found any improvements, new features, bug fixes, or anything in this yet?
Hardly want to have to install everything again just to update a game I never play.
Odd:
My detals are:
Software Version:
I8510XXHH6
Version Date: 13/08/2008
Custom Version: I8510L26XEUHH6
CUstome Version Date: 13/08/2008
And I'm in the UK. But when I run the updater, I get the message that
'Phone updater does not support the connected model. Thank you for checking.'
What's going on with this then?
Cheers

Fring has been deleted, hasn't it?
Things to test out:
How reliable is WLAN access. Does it still drop out?
Has GPS acquisition been sped up?
Is the audio / video lag still present in movies?
Can movies be played on a PC without being renamed?
Its a shame we cant change the region and/or language of the phone. Mine is DJHI1, english, chinese, malayin and theres no update for me... not complaining, never had any bugs, but Id like to get Portuguese or at least Spanish and theres no way yet. It upgrades based on the original region your firmware represents.

Weird......that was what my version was! Now I8510XXHJ3
There's something going on which makes the updater "choosy" at best as to which phones it's going to update.
My suspicion is that this issue is a driver / software issue, relating to how PC Suite installs on each PC. I don't think (at least for UK handsets) it's an issue with different phone versions.
I've asked Samsung's techy department to give us more info on this (it's annoying me that I can't get my HH7 handset to update, having tired on 3 PCs), but so far I haven't heard back from them.
