New Firmware Issues - N85

60 replies · 25,241 views · Started 13 December 2008

hey!
Just wondering what all issues have you people noticed in the new firmware for N85. The following are some major issues Iam facing>>>all related to charging!!

1) It wont restart on its own anymore except when charging...where it keeps restarting like 100 times

2) If i keep the phone off while charging after sometime like 30-40 mins i get a continuous beep with the phone frozen (only resort is removing battery)

3) It seems like the phone never gets fully charged because of these problems...as the battery lasts only for one day!!!

4) I forgot to add this earlier - I frequently get connection errors the first time i dial some number, it connects the second time without ne problem. My friends complain that my phone shows off quite often!!!!

Anyone having similar problems? Or any other problems in this firmware??

Any reasoning or solutions to these problems...please share!!

Thnks

P.S. They should disable accelerometer from working on the main screen and when we receive a call...damn annoying!!!

Mine doesn't restart when charging but just yesterday when I turned it on it went through the boot procedure, got to the standby screen and then restarted!

Had this twice. Once when putting phone on charge, once whilst phone was on charge the alarm went off, I snoozed it and then the humming began.

Oh and I agree with you about the accelerometer. We should be able to customise whether it applies to the standby screen in addition to other apps like gallery, games, videos, etc.

this happens to me all the time. Don't think ive had a call connect first time yet! wasnt sure if this was the phone or the network though 😡

I havent checked recharging in offline...will try and let u know...
about the network, i too thought that maybe its network fault...but when i try using any other phone..they connect on the first try in my area...

wierd for nokia to have faults like these!!

I tried charging my phone on a PC...and voila...dint restart at all. But when i play songs from my PC using the phone memory. It restarts!!

i updated mine, the only problem i seem to have so far is that when i set the volume controls to change the phone from landscape to portrait using magickey, the phone immediately goes back to portrait mode if i hit the volume button to change the screen to landscape mode. didnt have this problem before the update.

I dint quite understand ur statement 1nknp4rk "set volume controls to change orientation using magic key"??

Other issues
Restart during Video Recording over 2 mins
Voice Mail number not getting stored
Ngage games restarting

Though N85 has the same speakers as N82, volume and clarity seem to be sad. Whenever i play songs on the loudspeaker..its like the reverberation (3D Tones) TUNNEL Effect is ON..making it sound of echoes and losing clarity

leoamro, what i have problems with is using the app magickey. I used it to set the volume up button to change the screen orientation to landscape and the set the volume down button to change the screen orientation to portrait mode. This worked fine before the fw update but after the update. If i try changing the screen orientation using the volume controls it changes like it should for a second than changes back to normal on its own

Nice app LINK.was hoping for such an app for so long, i dint know it existed...thanks alot for sharing that info..Is there any application to get tap commands like N6600 fold or slide on the N85. As on nokia website it says ..that these phones use accelerometer to make the tap work than there shud be some application that wud make N82 get tap commands

I hope all the existing problems are just firmware related...cuz come to think of it...such major issues in a nokia phone left unresolved after first update makes me a lil suspicious bout the hardware...

has anyone else noticed the loudspeaker bug as described in my previous post - mp3's sound with slight echoes making them less clear??

thanks

Hey l1nknp4rk, I chose volume up and down keys and flip open and flip close commands and the app is working fine

P.S.
The battery of my phone is lasting just over 24 hours with 2 hours music playback....sad!!!!!!!!!!!
Is anyone getting shaky photos with their camera in good light conditions cuz for me the pic gets fuzzy with the slightest of hand movement..this is happening after the update was fine before

ill try reinstalling the magickey app and see if that was the problem..

im getting worse pic quality after updating the fw as well, pics come out a lil more fuzzy,

also, now my phone completely turns off while i leave it to charge overnight, before it just resetted itself, that wasnt a big deal for me but now it just turns off, it does still charge but this is really a problem, i wont be able to get any messages or calls or even hear an alarm, any1 else have similar problem?

hey
l1nknp4rk ...same thing happens to my phone...when its on charge...it keeps restarting...in the morning when i check..its off...the only way it charges in peace is in offline mode...but that wont help u...u'll miss ur calls anyway!

after the fw update..the battery has gone haywire...now its not even lasting 24 hours with NO music play back...earlier it lasted for 2 days with 2 hr/day of music playback....why is this happening....something wrong with my battery...or the firmware???

After the first firmware update im beginning to seriously consider getting rid of my n85 now and moving to the n96 or even back to the n95.

As the owner of a smart phone with 5mp camera and fm transmitter i expect, as a minimum, to be able to:

1)make and receive phone calls when required - signal permitting
2)connect to the internet at 3.5g - signal permitting
3)re-charge the battery when its flat
4)take decent quality photos
5)transmit to any fm radio within 2m of the handset

none of which i am able to do on a regular basis. I do not think the above requirements are too much to ask from an expensive handset but the following problems plague me on a regular basis

1)i need to dial each number AT LEAST twice EVERY TIME i want to connect a call. I am usually greeted with a "connection error" message upon first attempt and sometime need 5-6 attempts before connecting. I also know that a number of people have problems phoning me. This is not a network issue as the sim in fine in my n95.

2)the internet suffers similar issues to the phone calls and never connects first time even when in full signal areas

3)the phone turns itself off/reboots itself when charging. This is infuriating when it happens in the middle of a call. Charging a battery is something that every mobile phone since...well, ever...has been capable of doing. Why does this problem now occur with nokia's latest model? and why was it not noticed in testing?

4)the camera button is so awkwardly designed that it needs to be pushed INSIDE of the phones casing to take a photo. This requires a lot more force than any previous camera phone ive used and ALWAYS results in a slight jog of the handset as i take the picture which equals a blurred photo.

5)the fm transmitter seems to work when it feels like it. some days its fine, others (transmitting to the same radio, from the same location) it is not and all i receive is the sort of fuzz you get from a radio when its not tuned to a station at all.

Is anyone/everyone else having these problems even after the firmware update? I'm not asking for miracles and im all too aware that as an early adopter i would experience some minor bugs that would be ironed out with updates but frequently losing usage of the phones major features is not what i class as minor bugs!!

Mamoo=>
you are absolutely right, such defects in a "supposed to be FLAGSHIP" phone is really sad..

I too get connection errors every single time on dialling...maximum in a go was 3 connection errors...otherwise 1 is a must!

Dint try internet so far

Transmitter is just something to boast about - it sucks..i prefer using a car adapter

Camera was awesome in the previous fw - u can check comparison on N96 and N85 cam and N85 beat it all the time...but after the update...all pics are shaky and lil blurred...the clarity just died!!!

Phone used to turn off on its own during a call before the update - hasnt happened ever since...but on Charge yes it wont stop restarting and at the end hanging up with a continous beep

Battery performance has come down from 2+ days to 1 day after the update..I read somewhere that its cuz the fw doesnt display it right and cuts off the charge before the battery is fully charged...so it doesnt last long...

All i can suggest is wait - wait for another 1 or 2 fw updates, if these problems dont go ..then bye bye N85...but as of now...its too soon to decide...

cheers!

mamoo_51, i got all the same probelms as you and its really annoying and frustrating on a $500+ phone. even after successfully making a call the sound of the caller goes in and out and i can barely hear the person im trying to talk to, than itll be fine again outa no where....the fw update was complete shit.

leoaamro wrote:

As much as the FM transmitter is "just" a feature to boast about it is one of the main reasons (for me anyway) to upgrade from the N95 as not a lot else is new.

When it works ive found it to be great especially when the option of using adapters isnt available (cars with only CD and radio?!)
but for it to just decide on some days that it will not work at all is ridiculous.

I can understand some interference in the reception if the phone is some distance from the radio receiver but it just not working is a reason to return the phone to nokia for me!

As i said in my previous post, i could understand this if these were minor issues we were waiting to be fixed but all the problems im having are related to serious flaws in performing basic tasks the phone is designed to do and not minor bugs that occur in only extremely unusual circumstances which can easily be worked around for the time being.

l1nknp4rk wrote:even after successfully making a call the sound of the caller goes in and out and i can barely hear the person im trying to talk to, than itll be fine again outa no where....

I must admit ive not had this problem. Normally i'd suggest that either you or the person you are calling is having problems with low reception but if either of you are using the N85, based on other flaws it has, anything could be happening!!

I have had one connection error in maybe 20 calls since I updated the firmware (the first one I made, as it happens).

Never had this problem - internet works everytime for me when I have signal.

It certainly is different from the N95, but i've not noticed it causing any jog/blur.

I've not used it a massive amount but it has always worked (once slightly fuzzy but still pretty good).

I'll be completely honest - I thought that the release firmware was the best, most bug-free "initial firmware" of a phone that I have ever bought! The only thing that was noticeably a problem with that version was too much noise in camera pictures taken indoors.

The new version fixed this, so i'm pretty much a happy bunny :icon14:

I have probably had 2 restart crashes in the 7 or so weeks i've had the phone, and have generally been very impressed with the reliability!!

I've got some smaller annoyances with this phone, but they are all general FP2 issues I think (why doesn't every app - eg RealPlayer - use destinations?!?!).

@pennas
Thats really shocking to hear that ur not having any issues....I found it to be the MOST unstable nokia phone i've owned...specially being the fourth one of nseries...i found the software problems are crazy.

The camera issues werent there for me with the previous firmware, now i find them shaky...earlier they were crisp and clear...

What is the make of your n85? I think all n85 are manufactured in nokias new facility in China?

Mine is made in Finland and i can say the same as pennas, i have had no call problems no internet problems, no FM transmitter problems, no crashes, no restart during charge.

Cannot compare to previous firmware as the update was the first thing i did after turning the phone on.

one problem i have is the sound quality of the speaker when on a call; it goes distorted.

camera isn't as good as the 95 was but i think another formware update may sort it.

Can other people say where their phones were made??

I dont think being MADE IN CHINA should have any effect on the phone, what do u think? Its a new plant of nokia, where phones like N82 Black, N85 and E66 are coming here (DUBAI) from.
Skeptical bout the fact that chinese nokia phones are having this problem and not finnish!

Im sorry to mention, its such a relief to hear that. I sent a mail to customer care at nokia service asking if this is a hardware issue or a software issue for N85's. He informed me that I should give it for service. Seeing so many more people having problems with their phone I dont find any point in giving it to them and they wasting my time and just giving it back the way it is.

it does not matter where it is made, as long as it is made in nokia approved factory it could be a number of places in the world that nokia phones are made, if it is genuine nokia phone it does not matter, and the software is the same on all genuine nokia models, now if you have a fake nokia then it could be different as nokia os is proprietarty to nokia s60 3rd or s60 5th etc. not symbian itself but how it is tweaked to be delivered to nokia, just like samsung does thier tweaks based on symbian.

mine is made by nokia and it is as genuine as a phone made in Finland or Germany etc....
