mine is made by nokia and it is as genuine as a phone made in Finland or Germany etc....

you're right, it should not matter where it is made but it's not unusual for companies to ship batches of products (phones or otherwise) made in a particular factory that are later discovered to have the same fault across the batch leading to them being recalled and replaced with items from another batch.

As much as you're point about genuine nokia phones and the effect a counterfeit phone would have on the os is valid i, for one, am using an official nokia handset and can not believe that everyone who is reporting faults is any different.

i totally agree with u mamoo.
Btw i dont know where i read this, but just observed it, the keypad light has a mind of its own. Its on in the mp3 player app, when i hide it and come to standby screen and start dialling some number it switches off. Plus its so stupid of the screen being on the whole time during a call..

the keypad bug, the bluetooth bug, the ligh bug...all these are bugs and all these are consistent on all phones irregardless of where they were made. my phone tho made by nokia and not made in finland, is one of those phones that does not have a wobbly slider, its actually a very sturdy device not counting the creaky back cover that we all have to deal with. so yes it does happen that batches of stuff are faulty just like in every industry. n85 has firmware issues that will continue to be addressed with upcoming firmware releases. that is not faulty hardware but software issue globally....

you are absolutely right, such defects in a "supposed to be FLAGSHIP" phone is really sad..

I too get connection errors every single time on dialling...maximum in a go was 3 connection errors...otherwise 1 is a must!

Dint try internet so far

Transmitter is just something to boast about - it sucks..i prefer using a car adapter

Camera was awesome in the previous fw - u can check comparison on N96 and N85 cam and N85 beat it all the time...but after the update...all pics are shaky and lil blurred...the clarity just died!!!

Phone used to turn off on its own during a call before the update - hasnt happened ever since...but on Charge yes it wont stop restarting and at the end hanging up with a continous beep

Battery performance has come down from 2+ days to 1 day after the update..I read somewhere that its cuz the fw doesnt display it right and cuts off the charge before the battery is fully charged...so it doesnt last long...

All i can suggest is wait - wait for another 1 or 2 fw updates, if these problems dont go ..then bye bye N85...but as of now...its too soon to decide...

cheers!

N85 was NEVER intended to be a flagship of any sort. it was intended to be very much so mainstream device. keep that in perspective. there is nothing flagship about it. its just good ole made better.

I read it on a few sites, where they compared the cam and all and found N85 much more better than 96, and hence called it a flagship phone.

Another issue, couldnt take videos more than 2 mins, phone restarts...works smoothly in offline mode!!!

that would be correct in terms of n85 being deemed by everyday users the 'flagship' however that was never its official intention. n96 until n97 comes along in official terms still remains the 'flagship' if only by name. the whole idea behind the n85 was to make it available to more people at a reasonable price. and yes i am aware that is still has firmware issues, but let's face it there is no perfect phone and no perfect device these days right off the bat. phones has become very much like our pc's their 'operating systems' - firmwares constantly get updated, become more stable, bugs get fixed, new capabilities added, other removed...so the video issue hopefully will be addressed in the next update.

I'm quite happy to accept this but to not be able to make use of the phones main intended functions (make a call, charge the battery, send a text message, transmit fm signals) is appalling, early firmware version or otherwise

this i totally agree with, you are right the basic functions when not performing right are extremley frustrating. a phone's main function is to make phone calls if that is not possible then what is the point. hope you get your issues sorted out.

My N85 finally rendered useless!!!!

My phone slipped off my bed (less than 50cms) of height and voila....the headset doesnt work anymore...i can only answers calls from my loudspeaker!!...someone else on this forum had a similar complaint on N85 even after a new replacement!
Its not that the phone is too delicate...I had an N81 which dropped like 10 times from3 times the height and still worked...and N82 which i really regret selling for this phone....

So its finally time for it to go to the service center...will tell them of all the issues....lets see what they have to say...will keep u guys posted..
cheers!

I am the one with this issue on (2) n85-1 (UAE and Singapore variety)

I fixed it temporarily by fiddling with the headphone jack and repeatedly smacking the phone in my hand (vigorously).

Let me know what you find, what country are you going to have it serviced, see if there is a manual fix from the tech, and let me know what to tell them to get it looked at, since I am most fearful of sending it in and it working on the bench, but them sending it back, and it not working again.

Thanks

@AMRivlin
surely will do, I'll be giving it to the nokia customer care in UAE. Will keep u posted. The problem started off in a funny manner, I could hear calls partially at first..till it completely died out.

I'm on the latest 11.047 firmware and the most annoying bugs I have at the minute are:

* The connection error bug on first calls, I thought it was initially a network thing as it tends to happen when I've only got 1 or 2 bars, but I'd never experienced it as much on my previous n95.

* When connecting to the Internet (either GRPS or 3.5g) sometimes on the first connect no data is recieved even though the connection is up (checking under Connection manager I see data sent but nothing recieved) - usually disconnecting (long press of the red button) and reconnecting sorts it, but a pain especially if in something like Nokia Maps.

* Music Player, I've got over 1300 songs on my phone and use it to play through the FM transmitter to my car stereo. Sometimes on changing tracks I get the music player hanging as if it was about to skip to the next track but no joy and must take battery out to fix. It also sometimes reboots in the middle of playing tracks.

* Loudspeakers, on anything above 40% it seems to sound really distorted, checked I hadn't got a equaliser set or loudness, but sounds really bad.

* Sometimes photos that I've taken with the phone and then looked at over USB end up not being in the "captured" folder in gallery anymore and so I have to find them under "all photos" - annoying, but not a show stopper.

* Restarting whilst charging, pretty much all the time. Only seems to be in USB Mass Storage mode and not PC Suite mode, though. But as I use Linux mainly I don't have much use for PC Suite mode!

Anyone else experiencing this?

BuhSnarf, im experiencing everything you are except the havent tried checking the photo problem you said But my phone actually turns OFF while charging as well as restarts sometimes so its even worse.

I'm on the latest 11.047 firmware and im not sure if this is a bug or i'm doing somthing wrong
i'v set all my ring tones to "nostalgia" ring tone on all my profiles and most of the time it's ringing as it should but now and again it rings with the nokia defalt ring tone when i get a call , its just random !
dont know what else to change so it only rings with my ringtone !
any help would be appreciated

@woody
I havent had a problem of that sort, but the description u've provided, something like that happens only if my card is connected to the PC and the ringtone is not on my phone. Is it happening to any particular contact? cuz its a possibility that some contacts are individually assigned a different ringtone and that doesnt change even when u change the universal ringtone (dint happen so in earlier phones)..so u have to individually change it for those contacts.

@AMRivlin
I have given my phone for repair, I just said the ear piece is not working (if required u can demonstrate it), the service person said that it'll take 10 days for repair. I asked if N85 had alot of complaints in their service center and he said NO only a few have come compared to other phones - 5800 xpressmusic and E66, that was shocking to hear.

>>
For starters for people who havent updated their firmware and dont have much to do with fm transmitter...DONT update and wait for the next update cuz I've seen more downsides than fixes in this one.

I still feel i shouldnt have replaced my 2 month old N82 thinking 85 will have a longer battery life and the screen on the 85 wud make a big difference to me...IT DOESNT!!! atleast 82 was a strong STABLE phone with good loudspeaker and an awesome camera!

thaks for your reply leoaamor , i'v gone though all my contacts and there dont seem to be any ring tone attached to them, just done a test, rang my phone from my wifes phone a few times , 3 times it rang with my tone 1 times with defalt tone !!! just seems random!! i have thought of attaching my own ring tone to all my contacts but not sure that will solve it

I've had quite a few problems with mine when I first got it. Random restarts ranging from every 3minutes to every 2 hours, problems with sending texts, deleting my memory card's contents. I got this fixed by going back to the store and got the tech to flash the phone for me since if he messed up I'd be covered. I haven't had a restart or problem since. Just a suggestion.

what i'v done now is set all my contacts in to one group and then set my ring tone to that group , i'll see if that works ???

Inspite of finding so many complaints in my phone...my friend just purchased one and guess wat...its perfect!!...
he has firmware 11.047.....gps locks in less than 20 secs (even on cold start!)....no connection errors...3 days battery life using ngage and cam and average calls...no restarts...no shaky pictures....im just in love with this phone all over again..dont know why mine has so many problems, but his is just awesome.
Mine has been at the service center for the past 10 days now. Is expected to come in tomorrow.
Will keep u guys posted!

@AMRivlin
I got my phone back, they've replaced the earpiece speaker.

The connection error problem hasnt occurred so far and the battery is lasting longer. As per the service the main issue was with the software but i still have 11.0.047. I think the main problem was due to Nokia Software Updater. Cuz its pretty much perfect now. Give it to the service center it'll help alot

hi, I just stumbled upon this discussion because since the upgrade to 31.0.0.17 I have another strange issue with the alarm clock:
Before going to bed I regularly set the alarm to e.g.7:45am and switch off the phone.
Since the update, the alarm clock sounds at the correct time, but when i pres snooze the alarm stays off forever, or more exactly until i manually turn on the phone when i finally get up (therefore mostly too late in recent days 😞 )
When the phone has started, the alarm clock immediately reappears and can be snoozed for 5 minutes on and on...
Does anybody else have this problem?
greetings,gromit42

yes, i have experienced this too. Quite possibly the most ridiculous "feature" ive come across, with the exception of the issues that appear to be hardware related like the random resets, connection errors and dodgy fm transmitters!

I have found that if I leave my phone on charge in USB mass storage mode and then set my alarm it sometimes doens't ring in the morning.

hey there
...its been ages since i went through N85 forums, had no idea that a new fw is out. How is it? Still the restarts?? I could'nt get much info on it on the forum.
Need some updates on the new fw
...
btw ..after returning from the service center, after 2 days itself, my phone started restarting during charge, connection errors and restarting just randomly...the same issues all over again...its sad!

I bought my N85 exactly 3 months ago from today.
I had no issues with it & love using it. Prior to this I had a N96 which was purchased a month earlier than my N85. Still keeping it though. I find that I like the N85 more than the N96 in terms of its looks, size, feel & overall quality.

Anyway, after using it for about 2 months I noticed that my calender (I am referring to the date here) is not accurate in the sense that the date would jump a few days ahead of the actual date. This happens when my alarm goes off & I switched on the phone. After a while I noticed that the date has jumped forward to a few days.
I had my memory card reformatted & the phone hard reset but still to no avail.
Eventually had the software upgraded to the latest 11.047V.
Calender issue has been solved.
On one or two occasions when I charged my phone & when charging I always switch off my phone. It emits a buzzing sound. To stop that sound, I think I unplugged the charger from the phone & it stopped.
On another occasion I think I have to remove the batt.
If I am not mistaken, I had this problem once before & after the software was upgraded.
So far had no problem with cracked casing in fact like I said earlier on the build quality is much better than the N96.
Some slack / free play is expected between the top & bottom halves of the phone as it is a slider.
Also I do not like the color of the batt. cover which is "bronze" & the glossy front cover. They should have made it in matt finish which is more classy.
I thought they are coming out with other batt. cover colors as well.
As of now still no news on this.
Btw, just bought the 5800 XM 10 days ago. Initial comments are: is a good phone to play with for the price you are paying. Being Nokia's first touch screen phone some instability is expected. The Messaging section still have room to improve, organising of menu is a hassle & screen sensitivity can somewhat be improved upon. In terms of user friendliness & speed, I still find that a key pad phone is better & faster use. This is only my opinon.
Will keep you guys updated on how my N85 is performing in weeks perhaps months to come.

BuhSnarf wrote:I have found that if I leave my phone on charge in USB mass storage mode and then set my alarm it sometimes doens't ring in the morning.

If the alarm signal is a file on the SD card then I guess it will not sound since the card is not seen by the phone in USB mass storage mode.

I have an N95-1 with FW 31.0.017. I also have this problem (alarm works, snooze doesn't) since the firmware update, and it seems just a bug. Someone on Nokia Discussions Forums said this bug has been appearing on N96 and N78 two months ago, but has been solved by a FW upgrade. The problem on those phones was, you could only do snooze five times in total and after that, you had to restart the phone.

I did not test this, maybe someone else will?

Other people say some Psiloc applications can cause this issue, and I should do a full phone reset to see if the problem still persists. But I don't want to install all my apps again, I will set multiple alarms for the time being.

tompe wrote:If the alarm signal is a file on the SD card then I guess it will not sound since the card is not seen by the phone in USB mass storage mode.

Ah, of course, should of realised!

Finally after a 10 day long discussion with Nokia Careline online I gave my phone for service (AGAIN!) as the same problems discussed before started again. They promised me 7-10 days for repiar but today after 20 days- 10 of which went in fighting for a replacement they inform me that they replaced the motherboard of the phone..
Im confused bout onething...a mobiles motherboard has soldered chips - processor - sound and network etc..not like computers...so does that mean they replaced the whole inside of the phone - the camera included??

nokia's own authorised service center is pathetic...its more like i bought a second hand phone cuz from 3 months of purchase its been at the service center for 1 entire month...pathetic!!
