5800 on Orange tells me v 11.0.009 is the latest firmware version

47 replies · 17,706 views · Started 31 March 2009

...and when I type in the code on the Nokia website it agrees.

Why is this? I was hoping a firmware upgrade might resolve a couple of issues I'm having.

5800 on Orange is definately at v20. I upgraded mine about a week ago. Do you have the latest version of the update software? Unless Nokia have removed it again.

This is because network carriers like to add their own 'extras' to the firmware - custom menu screens, logos etc.
Most people on this forum will tell you that 'branded' firmwares are really just full of unnecessary crap and slow the phone down.

Change your phone's product code to an unbranded one and you'll have the delights of v20 at your fingertips.

Use Phoenix or JAF to change your product code - search elsewhere in these forums for the software...

Do be aware that changing the product code may invalidate your warranty, though if you change it back as soon as you've upgraded it shouldn't be a problem. You have been warned though - use this information at your own risk - I take no responsibilty for bricked phones!

I've heard that Nokia can track when you've changed the product code, and that they keep a record of this if you ever try and make use of the warranty.

Well we'll soon see as my phone is currently having the screen replaced(see my post entitled screen corruption) under warranty. I have changed the product code on my 5800 about 5 times, then changed it back just before I sent it away for repair.

Fingers crossed I'm not proved wrong!:embarasse

.

I too can't update the software and I am on Orange.

I have tried a few times as well.

It says I have the current up to date software but like you it's 11.00 whatever

Spoke to a helpful person at Orange (after negotiating their innane automatated service - How am I meant to use the alphanumeric keypad imput on a touchpad phone with a dialler, you numpties?) and then to a helpful Nokia rep (after pinging around another inspired automated service) who said that...

Orange haven't OKed v20 yet (which, I hadn't realised is the next version after 11 - there's no v12, v13, v14 etc)

She couldn't say when they would but seemed to imply Nokia expected it would be a matter of days rather than weeks (unless Orange discover some gross incompatibility) as the update's quite a major one.

Whilst in a call you just press the "Dialler" option in the bottom right of the screen, and you can navigate the menu system as such.

I am also on Orange and cannot update my phone to v20, my product code is 0576921. Hopefully it'll be certified soon, I would like a bit more performance out of my 5800.

i can't even get it to try ota on my phone, say invalid host address for the server, but it is set to uk.orangeupdate.com as it came with the phone

Hey there, I mentioned the Dialler in the post you quoted. My problem is that the Dialler doesn't show the "ABC" on the "2" button etc, so I have to guess which button they want when they ask me to "now put in the 4th letter of your password".

Do other people just text enough to have memorised which number keys represent which letters of the alphabet?

Edit: Have I missed some way of changing the Dialler settings to have it show "ABC" "DEF" etc? That would be a handy feature.

i got a bit confused when i rang them, i kinda guessed from memory, so i guess i do text too much, and got it right. i aggree was a bit awkward though

Ah. I'm not surprised my complaint stems from my inability to grasp new technologies!

Still, it would be useful if the dialler featured the text letters. Does anyone know if there's any means of putting in a feature request to Nokia for the option to be included in a future firmware update?

It's not just Orange passwords etc (although that was originally where I found the issue and, as far as I'm aware, there's no workaround other than having another phone to hand) but things like that advert with Holly Valance where she tells you to dial 0800-REVERSE. On a Nokia 5800? I don't think so.

Have you reported this issue to Orange? Have you reported it to Nokia? I have reported it to both of them and asked Orange to pass it on to Nokia. My guess is that there are loads of people with this problem that just think "oh dear" and don't bother to make sure the people who casued the problem are aware of it. If you haven't please go online to MyNokia and report it, and phone Orange and tell them.

It's like 20 years or so since people started putting letters on phones again in the UK and Nokia have decided they don't need them any more?!!!

jmccabe, how did you refer this to Nokia? I have registered with MyNokia and still can't finds a way to email them or fill out a form. A cynic might think Nokia have made it deliberately difficult for their customers to give them feedback.

Go to MyNokia and Sign In.
Click on the link "My Nokia Support"
Today there's a big picture that says "If you need to contact us...". Click on the "Contact Us" link.
On the page that comes up today, down at the bottom, is a "Call or email Nokia Care" box with "Contact Nokia Care via email". Click on that.

Fill in the box and off you go.

Note that this is all through www dot nokia dot co dot uk

Hope that helps.
John

Just checked NSU and OTA and its still on v009 😞

I hope it comes soon, I want to see this improved speed and responsive touchscreen for myself. (And I'm too scared to debrand it)

Thanks. Reported it to Nokia. Will report on any progress.

Just tried updating again through PC Suite and it went for it. Orange UK seem to have allowed v20.

Excellent

Now does anyone know how you can get it direct from your phone or is this not available to do so?

Yeah I can confirm this, bought one yesterday and tried OTA with nothing, but updating an Orange 5800XM through Nokia Software Updater DOES WORK!
It is a thousand times faster and way more reliable, and I noticed after just a few hours using it

AreEm206 wrote:Yeah I can confirm this, bought one yesterday and...

and to quote my own post, you MUST do *#7370# after updating, or Download! and Maps stop working! The Lock Code resets itself to 12345, also remember to hold down the # key to change to numbers mode!

I reckon some of you aren't noticing this, and think the code is mashed...

Now supports Alpha-Numeric lock codes!

Be careful what you wish for, huh?

Unlike AreEm206 I'm not overly impressed with the "upgrade".

The v20 update erased all my images and videos as well as all those that came as default on the phone (not a major concern) and now, although the phone is a bit quicker in general, opening and accessing certain functions the phone seems very sluggish. It has also crashed twice in less than 24hrs (having never crashed previously). In addition, this morning the volume controls on the handset and the remote did not work until I switched the phone off and on again, another problem I haven't experienced until today.

(My OTA updates do not work at all - I think it is a server set up problem. My "unlimited data" bundle comes into force tomorrow and I think this might be the problem, so I'm waiting until then before investigating OTA more thoroughly)

Edit: I don't know what's wrong with me but I utterly failed to read AreEm206's post to the end. Have just tried a "reset" (*#7370#) and will report back to see if this makes a difference.

Hmmm. Gonna have fun returning it to my previous settings. Hadn't noticed if it had gone after the v20 update or the reset, but any reason why iPlayer should disappear?

Cant say Ill miss it but others might the guitar game also seems to have disappeared. Wonder what else has gone

I am just restoring all mine now I was scared to do it haha.

I have noticed already so much faster even with custom themes. Not had chance to see what is missing yet. You can always download iplayer again. Saying that I had the latest version downloaded so it should be able to re-install it.

I hope all my messages come back though I had them saved to memory card but couldnt see them when I had a quick look after the update.

I think I might miss the guitar game it was the best one on there.

Nothing missing on mine that I have noticed, well apart from my messages that I thought were on my memory card but haven't loaded up :con? help anyone?

Iplayer still there, guitar game still there. There is a new app update thing which is handy but the search facility that was in internet is now in apps.

Hmmmm. All messages gone here.

And try to email Nokia about it (following jmccabe's instructions earlier, which worked once) and I now get a message:
