Hiya,
I was talking to the guy in my local phone shop a few days ago and he mentioned that later this year they should be getting supplies of a 1 gigabyte duo 'stick drive' which will be compatible with the P800. He sounded fairely sure of what he was saying, has anyone else heard of this?
Just imagine, widescreen DVDs on the P800! *drools*
There was an idea that the memory stick duo would not be able to hold more than 128 Mb in this size.
Another idea was that the 128Mb limit was within the firmware, if they could be persuade to increase it.
I would do a search and find the earlier thread if I was you, for now I am going to wait for 30th March to buy the 128Mb MS.
Mind you, I hope the guy in the shop was right.
Steve
BS. Memory stick doesn't support capacities above 128MB. Memory stick DUO doesn't support capacities above 128MB (except the "select" sticks that can have 2 or more units in 1 stick, and you can switch between them). Memorystick PRO is the only memory stick that supports capacities above 128MB
Even as the popularity of Memory Stick grows around the world, it continues to evolve, opening new areas of possibility. The first step was taken in 2002 with the introduction of Memory Stick Duo that enables the realization of ultra-compact, wearable devices. In the spring of 2003, Memory Stick media with Memory Select Function will be launched to provide a higher capacity solution as well as a user-friendly function that allows users to categorize data into separate 128MB memory units. It also provides wide compatibility with current and future Memory Stick compatible products.
Also in the spring of 2003, Memory Stick PRO media will be launched to meet the need for higher capacity with 1GB, 512MB and 256MB. Developed jointly by Sony and SanDisk Corporation, this new-generation Memory Stick format will offer a number of advanced functions in the future, with expandability to accommodate a wide range of applications, such as recording of high-resolution moving images.
Would be nice 😃 but I think he is talking about the Sony memory stick not the Duo.
Also the P800 dose not have support over 128 this might change with some kind of upgrade, will have to wait and see, but it is nice dream
I dont think that the physical model of the "old memory stick" or the duo version is limited to 128mb by hardware, the reason they going for a dual 128mb configuration in with the old stick is probably to ensure combability with older devices.
What is true is that P800 doesnt support more then 128mb duo memorysticks.
But the DUO sticks itselfs will probalby come in larger models.
Found a white paper from sony about memory sticks
check this out
I doubt the news too but it would be grand, if it is that big and remains affordable!
One of my friends, who works in a Radio/tv store, told me that the 1Gb MS would arrive soon. Not the DUO thou, but a normal memorystik

Yes, with AFFORDABLE being the key word....
Think about it, a 1GB DUO would probably cost as much as the P800 itself.
Oh my god. And 7650 users (i am one of them) complain about their 3.6 megs of mem...
Maybe nokia had the philosophy of "less is more"...
Yup 1GB Memory Stick Pro will retail for about $800. I heard.
guys...t68i has approx. 725 KB memory and it is really enough...i guess 128mb is for mp3 or movie or "ported game" lovers(see. edoom and some discussions about the size of 2 hours of mp4 movie😊..
? The T68 is a regular mobile phone....
P800 is a smartphone/PDA-phone and obviously needs more memory. 128MB is sufficient IMO though..
Holy shit! $800!!!! 😮 Thats more than the P800, way to much I must say but 128 mb is enough even for me 😃
Yess.. 128MB is good enough, or perhaps twice or trice.. but 1GB is alot of memory. *Feels Old* What would future generation think of us going nuts over a 1GB memory stick. :robot:
I found a local shop in Germany, where they get limited supply of MS-Duo 128MB for 175.

No you didn't.
We've too many "guest"s on this forum telling us this is available but in fact that's been bullshit up until now.
So unless you can state the name of the store and the name of the city where to find it I suggest you don't post on this topic any further.
Anyone who's been using a PDA/pc for a while know that you can never have enough memory/storige..
Do you think that the P800 is limited to 128mb DUOs through hardware or firm/software? Will SE be able to release firmware that supports larger volumes?
Wow - $800 for a 1GB memory stick... you can get an Ultra CompactFlash card with 512MB for around $110 now - but this will not work on Sony devices :-?

I dont think the software is a problem but the structure of the duo itself. The Memstick Pro which is the only one that supports 1gb has more pins than the ordinary ms. for more info on memory stick please check out www.memorystick.com
I think the guy you were talking too was gettin his story ready for tomorrow (April Fools Day) 😃
😮
You can already buy the 1GB memory stick Pro from Sony's web site for 585 - and I'm thinking of getting one, because my camera, the DSC-717, supports memory stick pro!!!
The biggest size memory stick duo you can buy from them, is a 64MB one, which will cost you 60.
Check it out here :

I wonder when we'll be able to buy them without the adaptor, as we've already got them (plus I don't even need mine as it fits my reader without...)
:-?
When i called up my local retailer asking for the arrival of 128MB stick, he surprised me by saying he has a 512MB stick. When I querried again is that a DUO, he reaffirmed it is. He said if you don't believe come and see.
Confused ? I will go and see today ?

I wish! He's just got it wrong I'm afraid. It's a Memory Stick Pro, not a Duo.
It's Sony's fault for bringing out two different alternatives to the memory stick and generating all this confusion. If the retailers are getting them mixed up, what chance does the general public have?
I would go and have a look, but tell him if it isn't actually a 512mb duo then you want a free 128mb one when he gets them 😊
i was there at Mustafa yesterday, those guys there could not get me even a 128MB DUO, let alone the 512MB DUO stick.
The service there really sucks. They should sell roti prata instead of hi-tech stuff.
So 512MB DUO stick does not exists yet.
😃
Sales people. They'll do anything and everything to get you in their store - and once you're there, you're in the 'DEN'....
I prefer to shop online, where I can decide where and what I want to buy, without nagging sales people in my ears! If I'm not sure about something, just use Google to search for a review on it and you can decide if you still want to buy it or not. Voila!
