I have also had problems getting it to re-flash my phone. When it was bricked it worked great, but not when I wanted to re-flash so that I could try and get accuweather and my music player working again.
I'll look forward to seeing how you get on Nifton.
John
John mate, whatever you do, if you have upgraded to V11 DO NOT try and downgrade to vodas v10. You can always side-step a revision, but never go backwards, you'll brick it forever if you do.
Cool let us know how you get on.
My N97 developed a screen crack so work are sending it back as "Intermitant Screen Fault" 🙄
New one comes tommorow.
Hi @ll
I have a N97 now too and it is branded with o2. I hope there is soon a solution to get that debrand done without the brick ^^
edit : I could not resist to change the product code and baamm ! Brick .... followed everything and im up again (debranded).
Whats funny about this : I have lost some widgets 😞
How to get them back ?
Apart from the obvious advantage of instant firmware updates, is there any difference between the generic firmware and Vodafone's firmware, apps etc; as there seems to be very little branding on Vodafone?

At the moment no. However that may change. Its more the frightening amount of first release firmware bugs that I was concerned in getting rid off. You just know its going to take vodafone 50 million years to release a update.
The ones I noticed were that they disabled the settings wizard so your phone doesn't auto configure if you place another providers sim in ( this irritated me greatly as I had to go and find t-bags settings )
No doubt everything on the phone that Nokia adds for VOIP has been or will be disabled in future firmware updates. they tend to hide things like Manual Network selection and Locking the phone to 3G although without a branded phone I cant verify they have on the N97. Not noticed any others apart from the bootup screen and "MyWeb" (browser renames annoy me to hell)
however vodafone tend to put little "gotchas" in their firmware the most famous I can think of was disabling the ability to use MP3s as ringtones on the 6630 when all theirs just 'happened' to be in M4A format. They said it was some c*** to do with copyright but its pretty obvious it was because every ringtone site was selling them in MP3.

I think the fact that it's hardly branded should make us more warey than ever, if they're trying not to draw attention to the fact they have bastardised the f/w, then what the hell have they done to it?!?
Anybody just tried the "Dead Phone" procedure yet but on a live phone?
By this I mean just taking the battery out and sticking it in when requested thus avoiding bricking the phone and telling Nokia you have changed the Product Code?

Some networks don't do much to their phones at all. I don't mind light UI customisations I can turn off and start-up screens etc what irritates me is having to wait 3 or 4 months for firmware updates and networks which disable stuff.
OptX - I also lost several widgets and I have tried re-installing the FW and they don't seem to come back.
We'll have to wait until they can be downloaded from the Ovi Store I guess.

Or does anyone know a way to brick the phone without using NSU?
Nope well none that don't involve physical damage 😛
It wouldn't surprise me if you could just flash a live phone by pretending it was dead.
hey, was just wondering, everyone seems to have bricked the phone when using NSU, has anyone tried doing the update over the air instead? i need to debrand mine in order to get spanish on to it (for some reason the vodafone uk version only has english, french and dutch :S) but i don't like the idea of bricking and bringing back to life. also, would i be able to get accuweather and facebook widgets back?
Yolmol wrote:Bugger - upgraded to T-Mobile on Tuesday!!Oh well, I'm sure it'll be worth the wait - I love upgrading my phone (amazing leaps and bounds appeared on the N95 after owning it from release) but can't say I'd want to risk kiilling it to do so!!
Just as a point of interest - How do you know what is branded and where? The N97 I received from Tmobile is unlocked and has no Tmobile branding on it or in the software?
I received an N97 today from T-mobile (upgrade) and it was t-mobile branded v10. Tried to change product code and updated to v11 and the usual white screen like everyone else on this thread. But back to life following the instructions using JAF and Navifirm :icon14:
I cannot run JAF on my Vista computer - I keep getting an error "Can't load WinSCard.dll" - any ideas? I've tried several different installations, and version of the emulator. Also tried setting all .exe files to WinXP SP2 compatibility mode.
I used version 3 of the emulator. I also had to set the main executable for jaf to run as administrator. Then run the v3 emulator as administrator too and shouldn't get the dll error.
Okay I got JAF running - so how can I get it to recognise the phone?!
OK Guys, on my third N97, the second one had no return spring in the slider, the backlight kept going off, and it rattled. Sent it back, they took three days to deliver it, and this one, rattles like a childs toy. Couldn't be bothered getting a 4th, they have now refunded me the cost of the phone.
Anyway, good news!
I flashed from Voda V10 UK code to Euro V11 using jaf, dead phone method on an untouched handset, with the update prod code enabled.
All apps install and run, uninstall without error. hard resets and backup/restores no longer brick the handset.
Most of the crappy lag and run time errors have been addressed, mine hasn't frozen or rebooted since running V11. I'd say its worth taking the plunge for.
Nifton, thanks for checking. However what do you mean by dead phone method?
I thought you would go from a 'untochted' phone, without using NSU?.
I am about to flash, but still wondering which JAF tickboxes to tick.
I aim for Manual Flash, factory setting and normal mode.
Which one did you do?
Thanks!:icon14:

Hiya Forest,
I can only assume you're from nottingham, it's only natural you won't get this first time 😉
You need to flash it as if it was dead, select all the options as instructed, just turn your phone off, remove the bat, then plug it all back in when you have pressed 'flash' but not before you 'ok' the warning message.
If you can get it working using the standard method you're a better man than I. All i get is a reboot of the device, then it just sits there for as long as you care to leave it.
hi ppl
ive followed the guide to bring my N97 back to life
but when i run the emulator i get loads of errors
please could someone help me or guide me in simple terms
thx Chris
Hi, i got an n97 (Black rm-505) UK Vodafone Branded handset.
i got a few questions before i willing to do anything
is there any differences between the black/white fones softwarewise ?
at the moment i`m on v10 fw, is there any huge differences between the eventual voda v11 fw and the v11 `Generic`one you lot get quicker by changing the codes ?
what i`ve got done so far is
1: change the wincard.dll from safe mode in the c/windows/sys32 folder
2: got `JAF 1.98.62` installed and `JAF 1.98.64`s .ini files into the ODEON/JAF folder
3: i got `OGM_JAF_PKEY_Emulator_v3` and v5.... wich one to use ?
4: bb5 Drivers i have got but NOT installed any because i dont know wich ones to use
5: I have `Ovi suite installed`
6: I also hve Navifirm v0.1 and downloaded ALL 7 files to a temp folder relating to an`N97/ RM-505/ V11.0.21/ UK CV B V2 (0585162)
I`m using Win XP home 32bit OS
all i get so far is 1st i run the `OGM_JAF_PKEY_Emulator_v3` then run `JAF 1.98.62`... i hit GO, then it says `error- BOX DRIVER NOT INSTALLED`, I tried V5 emu aswell, but SAME result
it says i have `USB Cable Driver version: 7.1.17.0` is this one ok ?
sorry for the long post but its normally better to giv lots of info otherwise ppl dont know my situation,
thanks.
Thanks Nifton 😊 Actually Amsterdam, netherlands!
But the trick worked! I did get the first standard message that it could not downgrade.
After that
Reading IMEI...
Failed! Aborting!
Failed to backup CRT...
and a popup that it failed to backup IMEI or something. After clicking that away I pushed in the battery and switched it on. and it worked 😊
Now reinstalling my settings 😊
Thanks!!

BOX driver not installed is OK, and keep the cable driver versions already installed. That's what I did. I used version 5 emulator
I officially love you all, my phone is alive 😃
Forest,
Untick the CRT-308 option under 'use.ini' 😉 glad it worked buddy! when you see the gay couple holdingn hands to that little tune when your phone comes back to life, it's like taking the biggest crap you've ever had its such a relief 😃
Hi, i now got `Nemesis Service Suite v10.38.14` when i installed it what option do i use, i think there`s about 5 different install option, F1, Multi purpose, and a couple of others, does it matter wich one i install ?, and summut about a driver to change at the end ?
also is the Ovi suite ok for this as lot of other ppl mention using Nokia pc Suite, i would have thought they were the same thing, just checking...
thanks.
Edit: i attatched a .word file with the avaliable BB5 drivers i have got, but dont know wich to intall, theres i pic in the .word file of the option i have

i`m looking for the Pheonix sofware at the moment so i got a variety of stuff at my disposal
from the experiences of other ppl on here what is the best/easiest/safest way of doing it, ?..... someone early in pg 8 i think it was were saying about after changing code, updating to v11 with a fone that is still alive and puttin in the battery part way through, or is it best to brick it?
also wich is best for changing product key?, nemesis or JAF ?, some say nemesis doesnt always do the trick?
thanks.
now that vodafone v11 firmware is out, has anyone tried going from vodafone v11 to euro v11 without bricking? i.e. changing product code and simply reinstalling firmware using NSU.
would be good to know 😊
I bricked two n97 phones (vodafone branded):frown:😡, now I got 3rd one Im not going to change product code.:con?

No, but I went from VodaV10 to Euro V11 without bricking it.
I also went from VodaV10 to UKV10. So if you're asking if a 'sidestep' is possible, yes it is. But i'd be careful not to rely on any backups you take after you do it.
