Bricked my N97?...

183 replies · 99,073 views · Started 01 July 2009

I'm getting a little confused here.

Anyone willing to write a guide from scratch?

I'm stuck on V10 on my 3 branded black N97 0586308

I haven't attempted to update yet as I've been trying to read up, I just can't seem to grasp which order to follow.

Hi guys,

I bricked my N97-1 (RM-505 code: 0576128) when I was trying to update the Firmware using Nokia Software. It doesn't work at all.

I followed all the steps on the tutorial of this forum and in every try it gets an error (log bellow).
I first tried with an Euro Firmware v11 then I tried the Emerging Asia V11. I also tried with Euro V10 with same error but the status bar showed it progressed more than the previous ones.

It is interesting to note that in some point it erase CMT but latter it can't write it. Also, the v10 has more files than v11. They are not used in this process?

Does anybody has any clue of the origins of the errors?

Bellow is the JAF log of one try:

I also went from VodaV10 to UKV10. So if you're asking if a 'sidestep' is possible, yes it is. But i'd be careful not to rely on any backups you take after you do it.

so you're saying, if i manually back up my files, change product code, use NSU to "sidestep" to euro v11, then manually restore my files, it should work without the whole bricking and bringing back to life process? is that what you did when going from vodafone v10 to uk v10?

thanks

No

It will brick. Or at least in my experience of tthree N97s and pretty much most people in this thread.

Now that Vodafone have released v11 (apparently) it may be possible to use NSU to upgrade to v11 and then change the product code to de-brand to Euro v11. People were doing this with 10 however it was noticed their was still a lot missing from the firmware (apps, menus etc) so clearly the FULL flash is not downloaded to save Nokia Bandwidth which is possibly where all these bricking issues are coming from.

Chances are at some point if you want a full de branded phone with no upgrading issues at a later date you will need to carry out the JAF procedure to get the full euro firmware on with all the correct modules. Otherwise this problem may well continue at a later date.

jmcgrath wrote:OptX - I also lost several widgets and I have tried re-installing the FW and they don't seem to come back.

We'll have to wait until they can be downloaded from the Ovi Store I guess.

The new Phoenix 2009 works perfect ^^ I flashed my non-bricked N97 with it and everything was back on. (AccuWeather and all the other stuff i was loosing)

Hi all I have been following this post for a while now but must admit it gets a little confusing wading through all the pages.

I have a N97 on the 3 network that is NOT bricked

but I wanted to use firmware 11 and subsequent new versions as they become available, like most of you all here.

Well I found this blog

http://n97debranding.blogspot.com/

I tried it and it works I now have a debranded N97 without turning it into a brick in the process.

Suggestion: will one or two of you "97th Degree Master Masons" out there distill the wisdom in this thread down to a single new thread post which can then be put as a "sticky" on the top of this sub-forum?

Reading the latest posts in this thread in the early morning hours before I've finished my first cup of coffee I was wondering what to build with all these bricks? A building? A wall? A monument?

Well said rdcinhou!

There are now 9 pages to read through on this subject.

Surely someone out there could post a stickie with the definitive guide for dummies on best way to debrand the N97. Please!

This is the blog I refer to above and it works

1) Check your version on your phone by pressing *#0000#
You will see your current softwareversion (currently probably 10.something and that's why you are on this page). The model probably is N97 and the type RM-505.

It is also important you have already installed the OVI-suite.

2) download the new firmware via Navifirm here

Run it (start-up takes a while, it retrieves data from the internet) and select the version that you want to download. Make sure that you know which firmware you want to download.
A list of all the product codes (and the ones which are already updated can be obtained here)

3) Store the files that you have downloaded in following folder:
C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-505

where RM-505 is equal to the code that you retrieved in step 1

You now have possession of the part that you need to upload to your phone!

To be able to flash this on your phone you need toinstall and get J(ust) A(nother) F(lasher) working

Download JAF version 1.92.62 here, and in order to get it working download OMG JAF PKEY Emulator v5: here

version 1.92.62 does not know the N97, so 1.92.64 can be downloaded. You don't need the .exe file just the .ini files. So download JAF version 1.92.64 here and only put the .ini files in the directory where you installed version 1.92.62

When this is done, open OMG JAP PKEY Emulator v5. After pressing go without changing any setting you should get JAF running.

You first get an error message that Box drivers are not installed. This is OK as you don't have a box. If you get a query regarding installing new drivers keep the ones you currently have (those you got when installing the OVI suite and they are perfect)

Press BB5, now we need to tell the programm where to get the new flash files.

First select: dead USB (even if your phone is still working)
Manual flash , factory set and normal mode.

If your phone is still working you can press .ini when it's connected. It will automatically know where your You can do this by connecting your phone and press: use ini, or when it's dead press the buttons MCU , PPM,CNT and APE one by one.

You should point them to your directory

MCU Flash file: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-505\RM-505_11.0.021_prd.core.C00
PPM Flash file: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-505\RM-505_11.0.021_prd.rofs2.V01
CNT Flash file: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-505\RM-505_11.0.021_C01_prd.rofs3.fpsx
APE Variant file: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-505\RM505_507_11.0.021_uda1_001.u da.fpsx

Also make sure you click the option: Change also product code and uncheck CRT 308.
Now make sure your phone is switched off and battery is in! Now take out the USB CABLE untill the program tells you to switch on your phone after you pressed FLASH.

When you press flash you first get an warning message to tell you you shoud never downgrade, when you click that away you should connect your USB LEAD TO YOUR phone.

Flashing will start and your phone will be on the new software!!

Differently of most people here I didn't get my phone recovered yet.
In every try, the JAF software shown the same error message (see the complete log on the post of 15-07-2009 11:13 PM):

Sending CMT HASH for SOS+ROFS1
Error sending cmd data...
Error sending cmd data...
Error writing cmt...

I've been monitoring three forums to find a solution. Also, I've been trying with different firmwares and OMG JAP PKEY Emulators in the last nights without success.

Does anybody here faced the same problem?
I found on the internet some hardwares ("boxes"😉 for N97 unlock / recovery. Do this stuffs work?

Thanks.

Might be a good idea to post the link on here so that other people can share it. :icon14:

EDIT.

Actually, after quite a few broken links, I've found a download here:-

@ edie209 and all

My N 97 was dead after firmare update.
I saw Your post about JAF and flashing...I try all,but I can't flash!
I had problem with cable driver 7.0.2.0 and now I install 6.85.10.0 .
When pop up start screen off JAf I checked bb5 and next "manual flash, dead usb, normal, factory set. In the screen under have message "JAF version 1.98.64
Detected PKEY: 90009AB2
Card life counter: 99.99%
P-key nokia module version 01.02
FBUS INTERFACE NOT CONNECTED!!!
USB Cable Driver version: 6.83.9.0
Changing mode...Done!"

Next- I uncheck CRT and check "use ini" and in new screen I check firmware version for N97.Next- I check "change product code " and after that I press "FLASH"

Then out in the bottom of the screen 2 variations, the first time to do half of the process and to print the phone "rebooted but not in flash mode...", a second variant that is not find phone even though the pressure of a button to start...
What is error???
Please help me!!!

cegevara,

I didn't get my phone working yet but I think I know what is happening in the second variant you described. In my opinion, the phone is not recognized by Windows at the same time you are trying to flash it.

With my phone, I saw it enters in a pattern of been detected by Windows for 2-3 seconds then stay a long time (30-75 seconds) not recognized before been detected again and the pattern repeats.

Try to see if this is happening to your phone. To do that, I suggest you let your phone for a while without battery and disconnected of the PC. Then open the Windows Device Manager first and, after that, try to connect it. Your phone should appears as a Wireless device at the end of the list and disapears entering on the pattern above.

If this is happening, you have to follow the last instructions of the tutorial (see the message of edie209 of 18-07-2009 12:04 PM) with care. In this part, you have the JAF message about the risks of downgrade, your phone connect on the PC via the USB cable and the battery off the phone. Almost the same time you click to go anyway on the JAF message you have to insert the battery on your phone.

In most of times, this procedure starts the pattern making the phone detected by the PC. The goal of this is to achieve a syncronism between the time frame of 2-3 seconds of the phone been detected by windows and the begining of JAF Flash process.

If you let the Windows Device Manager open all time you could see all this happening and tune the syncronism.

I didn't know how to help you on the first variation. But, I strongly suggest you to have the same drivers and software versions used on the tutorials because this could be the cause of the problem.

Good look.

Just a quick note

I didn't remove my battery for the process I unplugged the usb lead and had my phone switched off. when requested I connected the usb to the phone and the JAF software took control the whole process then took about 8 seconds to complete. I then disconnected the usb lead and rebooted the phone and everthing was fine.

Make sure you have everthing set as in the tutorial, I got errors when I didn't do the above.

easily_tempted,

I read in some places that people are facing problems to run JAF on windows vista. Most successful cases I've read was on windows xp.

edie209,

I had to remove the battery because my phone doesn't power on. In fact, it doesn't give any sign of life already. An exception is after the first reboot on JAF (just after the 'PUBKEYS already sent' messages) when the screen turns white. But then JAF shows the 'error writing cmt...' message and the phone stays bricked.

The syncronism issue I described before can be a specific problem of my bricked phone. But, in my opinion, this is something to aware and to verify when you get messages of phone not found.

Good look.

Hi
Thanks everyone for the detailed instruction. I followed instructions given in this forum. I had a 3 branded UK handset with (not dead, working already fine) , which I debranded without any problems whatsoever, using JAF. Firstly I flashed with the same version 10 and it was fine. then today i used nsu to update it version 11 which is latest.
thanks again for providing detailed information.

I've given up now, but I'm sure there must be able to do it on vista.

Hi all,

It looks like changing the product code this way won't brick your phone :

 • updating to voda firm v11 using NSU
 • changing product code to euro code
 • updating to the new firm using NSU

I have a voda UK N97, someone can confirm ??

Thanks in advance.

Make sure the 'smartcard' Windows service is running.
Did you make sure not to block the software with your firewall?
Is Windows DEP enabled? If so, disable it.

If you can't get it to work with the PKEY emulator, try "virtual pkey". I used that and it worked fine for me on Vista.

Have asked the same question myself, no one seems to have done it. I strongly suspect it'll work fine.

If you find out let us know! Might be worth making a new thread, seems to get lost in here.

Yes, it'll be a good idea to create a new topic only for changing the UK Voda product code. It looks like the brick problem is only happening with operator from UK ?

Anyway, do you want to create the topic ? I can help you to keep it updated, thanks
