Time to start giving Nokia a hard time again...

B*gger!

Happy bunny time = 36 hours

500 phone = 13.89p per hour

Surely at this point you would be entitled to ask for a refund and go purchase something else. Though of course Dave may not want something else just a working phone.

It's not as simple as a refund though...

Bought the phone from Expansys in a package with a T-Mobile SIM and have mostly dealt with Nokia directly.

I'll have to look into it... But you're right, I'd rather have an N97 with a lens that didn't scratch. It could be a great device, but right now I CBA to install anything on it... We'll see what October brings...

Like I said over on the guru site, "No disrespect meant to the finns but its metaphorically in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying Beware of the Leopard."

Guru picked it up on the 7th...

But coverage has been really really quiet when you consider how big a deal this is...

Sorry Dave... didn't realise it was old news.

At least Nokia are recognizing it as an issue and can no longer deny that it is a problem for some users.

Luckily not me though as this photo of Angelina Jolie in the bath that I took last night proves...

No point to 'free repairs' (how very big of them, repairing your phone that damaged itself under warranty) if the new lens cover is going to do the same thing - see Dave's recent experience.

I don't want to schedule a fortnightly trip to my local service point, I want to hear of a fixed design, with a revised mechanism that will definitely not damage the lens.

No worries. The fact that you hadn't seen it demonstrates my point rather nicely... They've admitted it but hardly anybody noticed...

Vogon construction fleet will be stopping by later today 😉

Just trying that old British trick of trying to raise a smile in the face of adversity. (see the film Zulu)

I have to say that my N97, made in Finland, with no protective case and carried in jacket and shorts pockets, has taken over 200 photo's now without a scratch on the lens (touches wood).

However, that doesn't mean to say that the next time I open the cover it won't decide to engrave my lens.

There could be many reasons why more people haven't complained about this...

1. They simply haven't noticed it.
2. Lens covers possibly made by different manufacturers.
3. Been fobbed of by Nokia Care centres.
4. ???

Vogon construction fleet on the way!

I'll get me towel. 😃

Just pushed it over the edge......now up to 1000 signatures.

Still not sure Nokia is really listening, but I have to say that I might be tempted back to the N97 once the 2.0 firmware is out, and this issue is fixed.

I don't see that Dave's new disguise, as shown in his avatar, is going to fool a Nokia hit squad though.:secruity:

My N97 (RM-507 still my original one) takes pictures just fine.

But it is because the scratch on mine is just a "hair" outside the round lens aperture instead of across the lens like everyone elses.

Would Nokia consider mine a defect worth replacing?

I too am waiting for the "October Surprise" v20 firmware.

It better be worth waiting for.

you're gonna have to change your signature again Dave, you got 1002 people on your petition :icon14:

davecozens wrote:My signature is perfectly up to date, thanks ;P

Do I detect a certain smugness in 1,000+ signatures. 😃

Those signatures equate to roughly half a million 's (€5487980.7692 or $8012820.5128 ) of unhappy people.

Your petition is only the tip of the iceberg.

P.S. Like the beard! Sure I've seen you on Crimewatch.... can't think what for though...

I hate to think how many people haven't heard of the petition or simply C.B.A, I reckon the 1,000 makes it worth the effort, but not smug - I'd rather my N97 was awesome 😞

RE: Crimewatch - Never been on it (cheeky sod). Often consider commiting crimes in drag or wearing a loo seat round me neck, just for comedy crimewatch reconstructions*

Makes you look like the character 'Alan' from the film 'The Hangover'.....

" Is this the real Caesars Palace? Did Caesar actually live here?"

Michal over at my-symbian has done a VERY detailed preview of the N900:

Of the camera lens on the N900 he says

"lens cover does not scratch the lens (like on the N97) but it does scratch the part of the casing it slides over"

Man... Nokia really don't learn do they? 🙄

They do. They learn that they can get away with it!

*sigh*

Reading that review, I have to say - Damn, I wish I didn't get the N97!

Yep, I agree - they don't seem to think the N97 lens cover is a problem so hey, why change a winning design?

The N97 does appear to be the poor relation in the Nokia family at the moment (check out the slew of firmware releases for other handsets over the last 2 weeks), starting to wonder if the N97 will be quietly phased out once the mini is 'in the channel'...

The N900 is just a little toooo big for me, the N97 is the limit of what I could carry all the time, that and the lack of portrait mode for anything except the phone and the battery life (not touched upon in Michal's review and likely to be the N900 achilles heel).

I dunno, I reckon I could live with the big for the power that you get there.

Ironically, I'd be a little concerned about battery life with all that power...
